Hello, friends!

Next Wednesday, I start chemo. I'll be getting dosed every 2 weeks for the next 6 months, after which time we'll reevaluate for surgery and if it's desired, 2 months later I'll have surgery which will take about 3 months to recover from. Oof.

What this means is I am not going to be able to continue my travels meanwhile!

So I need your help!

I need to travel vicariously through you!

I need you to send me postcards! Lots of them!

DM me for address and plz boost

is it normal to pay for your own travel expenses as a contractor (when travelling at the request of the client)?

kitchen,
@kitchen@simian.rodeo avatar

@dantleech ultimately I’d bill them to the client either directly via an expenses line item (flight, transit, per diem) or inflated hourly rate but personally I’d want that to be separate line item for transparency.

On my end I’d definite track it as separate expenses.

Now if you’re working for ACorp and they’re the ones being contracted they should be paying your travel expenses because you’re traveling for work. No question.

kitchen,
@kitchen@simian.rodeo avatar

@dantleech if billing client direct for expenses make sure to set expectations and also make sure to set your per diem high. Hotel breakfast is expensive. You don’t have the luxury of cooking your own food. You aren’t in your own home. You deserve to get paid for that inconvenience and that’s built into the per diem. $75/day is a good base I’d say.

Hotel room should be standard business hotel for area and flight if over 4 hours should be premium or business imo.

Ok, so remember that thing the other day where I said I was having a shitty day because constipation and such?

Welp.

It dun got shittier.

Went to doctor here in Toyama this morning and after an exam they did a torso CT and, well.

I probably have colon cancer.

So now I am in a mad dash to get back to the US as soon as possible to figure out where we go from here.

I don't know any further details, as mostly what I heard from them is “you need to go home, now" and language barrier and whatnot

kitchen,
@kitchen@simian.rodeo avatar

Oh and for what it’s worth I not only welcome but expect, nay demand jokes and memes and such about this situation.

If you go too far I’ll let you know but won’t hold it against you ;)

Tldr: I’m assing you to make me the butt of all your colon cancer jokes

To establish a baseline: when my friend Sam was first diagnosed it all started off with a seizure.

His niece bought him a shirt that said “seize the day”. It was his favorite shirt

That’s the level of memeing I expect from y’all

folks: Is there a way to activate a CSS rule based on the hash location?

Say I have foo.html, but if you go to foo.html#success a previously hidden element is shown.

I'd like to do this without any javascript if possible.

@dantleech I won’t lie and say I love php but I will say it’s been a hell of a lot of fun watching you do this and seeing the awesome results. Fucking great job!

just watched this 50-body system evolve for several minutes. most of the bodies finally accreted in the middle, while the rest formed a scattered disc of relatively stable orbits roughly on a plane.

this happens to every system i create. just like in nature. it's fascinating to watch these mechanics play out in the space of mere minutes. the disc forms due to the conservation of the initial, very small, random angular momentum that the system had when it started (all masses and momenta are randomly chosen at the beginning).

this system is moving through space in a little tight corkscrew because the orbiting bodies happen to be mostly on one side of the main central body. that pattern comes and goes in repetition, so sometimes the center is more wobbly than other times.

(that wobble is how we sometimes find exoplanets, and this simulation can give you an idea of how hard it is to characterize a system based on those wobbles alone.)

kitchen,
@kitchen@simian.rodeo avatar

@est how many get ejected out and how many collisions are there? Or if not collision “close call what probably would have cause both bodies to break up”?

This seems like a fun thing to play with :D

Did front brake pads and both tires. Also bought a new pump finally after the one I bought in NZ died on me after the literally second time I used it ever in Taiwan.

They aren’t marathon plus as it seems nobody has those here? But they are still good. I hope. Partially why I bought the pump tbh

6000km maybe on that rear? A lot of which was super low pressure in Hokkaido because I couldn’t be bothered to put air in it ever, which is why the sides are so worn.

@GayOldTime @kf question I have is: is the whole pack 5 cents or is that a retail display and each pencil is 5 cents?

Imagine that whole pack being 5 cents. That’s a lot of gay pencils for a nickel

Bad idea time. Okay so multi-gigabit Internet connections are already available in some places, right? This sort of bandwidth is competitive with, say, RAM. The only reason we don't actually use the Internet as RAM is because the latency would make it unworkable.

But could you imagine? Like, how hilarious would it be for your computer's RAM to be effectively unlimited? And also shared with other people. Multiplayer memory. MMORAM

kitchen,
@kitchen@simian.rodeo avatar

@est I mean it’s already basically the ram for my brain.
