Should we silence mastodon.social?

Third spam wave in a very short time.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@muppeth @selea that and general discontent over making mastodon.social the default instance on the official iOS app.

But IHMO if you see nothing wrong with considering a centralised app store the primary discovery method for your decentralised social network, than you really have bigger issues than a pre-configured default instance on that one optional app in the centralised app store.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@fuesstest @al1r4d @hacknorris this is untrue, lots of further OMEMO development and it works great out of the box with most (Android and Linux) clients these days. Its only web and iOS clients that are a bit hit or miss these days.

Is there an easy way to tell what software is running on a fediverse server?

I know Mastodon has the /api/v2/instance point.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@stefan on /api/v1/instance you can also get similar information on Akkoma (Pleroma).

@stefan and on the Fediverse people insist on doing the image labeling for free :ablobcatsweatsip:
The Sci-fi nerd in me can't help but think that we are being gamed by some AI into doing this grunt-work for it :ablobcatwink:

@snott needs the Nginx part as well, no? But the proxy works fine here, I just followed the install tutorial from the official docu.

Messenger-Apps 2023 so:

I was reading about @kris including support on same federated ID.

This is one of the features I really want. This is the one that kills , because they simply can't offer it.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@marqle It's not very hard to do if you run your own Mastodon or Akkoma/Pleroma instance. Or maybe you can convince your instance admin to do it? Let me know of you need any help setting it up :blobcatnerd:
I will probably write a tutorial about it on https://joinjabber.org at some point.

What's the status of #stickers in #XMPP ?

I've found this #XEP 0 but it shows as experimental so I was wondering whether discussions were happening somewhere or if one can add a +1 about it somewhere.

I know it will sound stupid or just not a priority to some people but unfortunately, stickers are a requirement for many of my friends when it comes to #instantMessaging.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@silmathoron Not so well. #Moxxy ( https://moxxy.org/ ) is AFAIK the only client that has implemented XEP-0449. #Movim has their own old system that I think only #Pidgin somewhat understands otherwise, and #Cheogram recently added a sticker-picker but it just shares http_upload images. #xmpp #jabber

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@mattj @silmathoron Having just tried the Sticker installation on Cheogram I would say a more stream-lined and integrated installation procedure is vital and I think the video you shared speaks for itself :ablobcatsweatsip:

    Hope you feel comfy next to my #EteSync, #Framadate, #FreshRSS, #Invidious, #Jellyfin, #Jitsi, #Mastodon, #Mumble, #Nextcloud, #Nitter, #PrivateBin, #RustDesk, #SearXNG, #Synapse and #Tor-Relay 🤗

    #Selfhosting is so awesome 😍

    So ein bisschen "back to the roots" mäßig, zurück in Richtung TS3.

    This is a nice idea: https://codeberg.org/Windfluechter/check_mastodon.sh

    It automatically closes registrations when the server gets too big and can be used in combination with an clean-up script to delete inactive accounts.

    kris, to fediverse

    Today I have been experimenting with the lightweight server: https://github.com/kd2org/karadav

    It is really easy to set up, even supports the clients and comes with a basic looking but functional web-client as well.

    Ultimately, the goal is to offer a bit of webdav storage here on this instance, similar to the "drive" feature in / but compatible with a lot of external software such as to sync browser bookmarks or for notes.

    Account integration can be done via or a small custom script, so I am confident that I will have it fully working soon :blobcataww:

    Very exited for user self-registration coming to the Canaille frontend: https://gitlab.com/yaal/canaille/-/issues/55#note_1381533038

    I wrote up a quick tutorial on how to link with accounts in here: https://meta.akkoma.dev/t/webdav-cloud-storage/466/2

    Its working quite nicely overall and I will add it as an option for cloud storage here on our instance.

    Intentionally it will not be a lot of storage as we would like to avoid that people upload all their holiday pictures to our server, but it should be sufficient to sync notes or bookmarks etc. between devices :blobcatfingerguns:
