@bananafungus tbh everyone should be eligible for either shingles or chickenpox vaccine for free, because otherwise the scenario you are now in is going to crop up repeatedly for quite a while. I got shingles in my early 30s, and was lucky it wasn't painful, but realised as I'm now older it will get more common to crop up and I might not escape the neuropathy 😬

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@bananafungus @bot001 if they were born before 2005, yes, there's going to be a cohort who could potentially be vulnerable to chickenpox who didn't get vaccinated before it became part of the 18 month NIP vaccines.

I'm planning to get the shingles vaccine as soon as my GP gets stock, the rules changed on Nov 1st and now some are eligible for free. I don't think I am but it's meant stock has got stretched =p

@CEOofmyhouse56 @Seagoon_ I have also had to do this in the last couple of days. To go to the playground, which is right behind my house, I take a Big Stick and Wave It Threateningly.

The past two nights I wrote a "thread reader app" for BlueSky.

The protocol is absolutely insane.

There's no privacy. And I don't mean missing DMs.

All your posts are available through API endpoints. Without any authentication. By design.

The "invite-only" thing may have you think otherwise.

Here are my last 100 posts.

@AngelaScholder @badlogic I think the login wall and lack of free signup access is enough for many to be surprised, to be honest. Exclusivity and a wall is enough for many to assume lack of open public access, that really isn't unreasonable.

@Mittens_meow @bot001 if I'd seen any questions on here about it, I would have recommended , if available: tends to cause less reaction than the mRNA vaccines, but not many places have it. Something to keep in mind for next year perhaps.

@SituationCake @bot001 well that just gave me a heart attack! I am glad to see I didn't remember the date wrong and that's just early voting. Phew.

@kirk781 @Serinus I'm not even on lemmy, the Fediverse is quite awesome and not quite as backwater as you might think, reach is an odd thing, not consistent at all but sometimes things really do go far =)

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@baconmash @6368_39162 there is a way. It's actually being commercialised overseas but last I checked hadn't come to AU because the market is too small.

Many, many people have asked about error messages when using mastodon.social.

Mastodon.social is far too large. Its massive size causes errors, and threatens the long term safety of the whole Fediverse.

I strongly encourage people on mastodon.social to move their account to another server.

You can find reliable servers on the official site at https://joinmastodon.org/servers or my own recommended list at https://fedi.garden

Here's a step-by-step guide for moving: https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server/

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@feditips @bitflipped yes, aware of all these things. You can't migrate anything and guarantee the links will update, beyond a certain point, and have already been playing around with the WordPress ActivityPub plugin, but it's not playing nice with my shared hosting so waiting to see if that kind of issue gets resolved eventually. Importing posts from one site to another will always be a copy, for me it would be incredibly valuable to have that long timeline even with issues. Back in the days this issue was discussed and dealt with in various ways by LJ clones.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@bitflipped @feditips I believe Firefish and other Misskey based instances allow migration of posts? Possibly other Fedi projects too.

It's what I'm hoping for most in Fedi generally, I know that there's WordPress plugins to import Tweets, for example... my ideal scenario is being able to get all my old xml files from every social media site that allowed export before they died / became enshittified, to import to one master Social Media timeline for all of my history, including a permissions capability for comments to be imported as well. Yes, I am a dreamer. But I'm sure I'm not the only one.

🚨Elon Musk just lost $28bn as Tesla took a beating🚨

Toyota’s chairman Akio Toyoda, tells the EV market "I told you so", as sales slow dramatically.

Toyoda has long advised the industry to hedge its bets on EVs by continuing to invest in hybrids, hydrogen-powered cars, & other alternative eco-friendly vehicles.

UK insurers have hiked premiums to unaffordable levels because of the high cost of EV repairs.

If not EV's, then what?

@mackaj @hansbot @Hypx @AnthonyFStevens @respectmyplanet this is the biggest gripe I have around the discussion of hydrogen. There's a massive difference between hydrogen combustion and HFC. But there's again almost an order of magnitude difference in efficiency of HFC compared with BEVs. Until we have excess capacity of green hydrogen production (and I do honestly think this will eventually come) we should focus green hydrogen production to go towards the uses of hydrogen that can't in the shorter term be taken up by BEVs. That's just practical reality at this point, though I do think all governments managing electricity grids that have small scale domestic solar connected in increasing capacity (ie most western countries at this point) absolutely need to be putting in place the infrastructure for green hydrogen production during times of excess renewable production now.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@cuavas yeah, it's pretty shit. I guess allowing more flexibility on when people start and finish work plus continuing work from home options might help a bit. But yeah, there needs to be serious investment to improve things.

@erikKroes @odddev @blitter @leyrer @matrix personally never found Matrix even slightly problematical, but most people I know needed significant push to try it, even though even the low tech ones were quite capable of installing Riot (now Element), it was merely a psychological barrier.

It's time to remind others that fanatics are blatant liars. They do not take environmentalism seriously. It is just a game to promote the BEV over all else.

And it is likely because they own shares in BEV companies, or they are trying to rationalize their own car buying choices.

As a result, they are basically fighting against climate change. They are working for corporate interest and the Chinese government. It has become a nightmare, and arguably the greatest greenwashing act today.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @ScottHutchFP ...what do you see in this picture that looks suspect?

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @ScottHutchFP .... you hate BEVs because of Space Karen? I am no fan of him either, but I kind of think the fact that the big oil companies are paying money to promote hydrogen, is a bit of a hint that it's not the panacea you make out.

Remember, Tesla wasn't even started by Musk. He just sees something he can take and takes it. The big oil companies see the threat of BEVs to their profit model, and are spending big to try and redirect attention.

...you wouldn't happen to be a shill for Big Oil, now, would you? 🤔

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @ScottHutchFP your hysterical ranting isn't doing hydrogen any favours, you do realise that, right? It's just... weird.

Victorian electric car owners win High Court challenge against controversial tax.

@trelord75 I don't have a problem paying a road user tax, but it should be levied on ALL road users, at a federal level, and based on WEIGHT, not fuel used. So those ridiculous utes that just keep getting heavier and heavier are appropriately taxed. Carbon price on petrol should be instigated as well, take the petrol excise out altogether and just make a user change for all vehicles, it was annoying having to submit my odo, but why shouldn't everyone, not just EVs??

The average ute in Australia is now 2 tonne. My Mitsubishi Minicab-MiEV weighs about 1.2 tonne, around HALF that of the average ute!!

When ute owners stop getting tax breaks and start paying road user charges AND a carbon tax for filling the air with far more poisonous exhaust fumes than they need to get where they need to go, that will be a good day.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Jakra @trelord75 shouldn't be too hard, each vehicle has an estimated weight, and don't they weigh freight vehicles as it is? Though I don't know much about road freight tbh.

🇦🇺 Australia: Millions of Aussies ruled ineligible for improved COVID vaccines.

"The Federal Government has secured about 3 million doses of the XBB.1.5 vaccines. That is 1.2 million fewer than the number of Australians aged 65 and over."

@earthmothering9 @DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 worse than disappointing. I was already looking at vaccine tourism for my daughter now she is 2, given our government still hasn't given permission for younger children to be vaxxed. Now I have a reason to go myself!
