Canonical has poisoned search results for many apps plus a Linux distro name. For example, Googling “Spotify elementary OS” returns an auto-generated page on the Snap Store site that requires using a terminal, installing a whole package manager as root, and missing out on details and updates in AppCenter.

elementary would point you to Flathub where you can install w/two clicks and then get AppCenter integration.

How do we feel about this?

lffontenelle,
@lffontenelle@mastodon.social avatar

@cassidy I'm spoiled by the Arch Linux wiki, and the Gentoo one before that. With Endless OS I only needed help once or twice, but turned to the forums soon

Bumblebees learn by observing other bees. Bumblebees, like ants, may even teach each other. In a University of London experiment a bee watched a "fake bee" (a fuzzy yellow & black orb on a stick) pushing a yellow ball into a circle for a sugar water reward. The bee copied this action.

When a nest mate was introduced, they learned by watching the bee trained in the previous experiment. I find the idea of a "fake bee" adorable.

So I finally had a taste of this super famous egg tart that everyone queues up for.
All I can say is... Thank god I didn't queue up an hour for this.
I mean it's good lah, but it remains a mystery why people would queue up in long lines for this. 🤷‍♀️

Was going to ask about it! Here in Brazil we call them "pastel de Belém", with "pastel" standing for tart (not the same thing, usually) and Belém being a city in Portugal.

    I cannot describe how far the accuracy of Google search results has fallen into the gutter.

    You would search for a term and get news coverage of that topic.

    Now, you get at best 2 articles, while the rest is VPN blogs, two random tweets, and a bunch of forums and blog posts that casually mention the search terms ONCE with no relation to the phrase/context in which they were shared.

    I'm honestly thinking of ditching Google for Bing or DDG at this point.

    Yes, it's literally THAT BAD!

    lffontenelle,
    @lffontenelle@mastodon.social avatar

    @campuscodi DDG is a little funny because it doesn't remember what city I'm in, which operating system I use, which topics I usually search for. Makes me be more explicit in my searches, like in Alta Vista or before Google had cookies and user accounts.

    Mini rant - "last name" "first name" is so effing confusing. If I want to be literal, my "last name" is my given name and my "First name" is literally my family name. Sometimes I panic, like this morning, wondering if I filled that stupid field up wrongly confused & thus have to deal with beurocratic nonsense to get it right.
    And this must be extra confusing for Malay or Indians who follow a patronymic naming system.

    lffontenelle,
    @lffontenelle@mastodon.social avatar

    @liztai

    Here in Brazil we do given name first followed by two family names: maternal and then paternal. Needless to say, the latter is used for alphabetic sorting, so when we fill a "first name, last name" form we have to choose between omitting our maternal family name or we put it in the end of our first/given name

    For decades, astronomers have dreamed of setting up an observatory on the far side of the Moon. I read about it as a kid. Now it's happening!

    The LuSEE-Night radio telescope is under construction, and is scheduled to land on the lunar farside in 2025. It's a pathfinder for a much bigger radio telescope that would follow. https://newscenter.lbl.gov/2023/09/26/listening-to-the-radio-on-the-far-side-of-the-moon/

    I got the wavy hair gene from my mum's side, where almost everyone has wavy/curly hair. My curls are not as prominent, but some days it just decides "I am gonna be crazy today!"
    My only got like this after puberty, and before that it was typical ramrod straight and my mum would give me the China doll hairstyle (which I loathed).
