Random thought this morning - sometimes I think the East vs West reaction to Covid, how Asians seem to willingly put up with lock downs and masking is because we had experience with SARS. Malaysia was also one of the countries badly affected and I remember just working a few km from the hospital with SARS patients and having to read about nurses and doctors dying from it. I think SARS was also deadlier than Covid.
Did we mask and isolate back then tho? I can't remember 🤔

lffontenelle,
@lffontenelle@mastodon.social avatar

@liztai I remember seeing in 1992 a recent footage from Japan which incidentally included someone with a mask working in a shop. The person who made the footage explained it was common for people to wear a mask when they had a cold.

I also remember reading a journal article reporting how China adopted masks during the 1918 flu pandemic, and arguing it had something to do with people using masks for COVID-19.

lffontenelle,
@lffontenelle@mastodon.social avatar

@liztai So, while none of this is specific to Malaysia, I guess the willingness to mask up didn't begin with SARS.

lffontenelle,
@lffontenelle@mastodon.social avatar

@liztai Regarding you not remembering masks even though you lived through SARS. The difference is SARS is far deadlier than. COVID-19. There were not many people with mild symptoms running around, saying they can't have COVID-19 and infecting others. This made it very, very easier to control SARS, even in Canada. It was so much of a hospital disease that a sizeable portion of patients were healthcare workers.

lffontenelle,
@lffontenelle@mastodon.social avatar

@liztai Concluding, I guess healthcare workers and public health officials in Eastern countries (and Canada?) might have realized the importance of masking up against COVID-19 earlier because of SARS, and communicated it more appropriately to the public.

(Speaking as a medical doctor, with a PhD in epidemiology, who most importantly read too much scientific and Twitter arguments about masks and COVID in general)

Space junk is a growing problem in low-Earth orbit, with over 130 million pieces of debris larger than a millimeter orbiting Earth. These impact satellites and other debris, creating even more debris, and if something isn't done, more and more damage will be done to our existing orbital infrastructure - even risk the lives of astronauts. ESA released a new plan to dramatically reduce the production of new debris in Earth and Lunar orbit, aiming for zero debris by 2030.

We set the clocks back last night at 2:00 a.m.

Question: If a journal receives a submission within its scope, and has trouble finding referees, how long should it wait, or how long should it keep trying, before it notifies the authors and invites them to submit the manuscript elsewhere?

I'm prompted to ask this question by the case described in this article, which is about "handling editors" rather than referees.

@petersuber Good question. The issue of finding reviewers is compounded by there being at any time some reviewers who did not answer yet and others that confirmed they would review, some of which will not be late yet. And there might be a lone review report, waiting for the second or perhaps third one…
