“Interstitial journaling” is the practice of making short journal entries between tasks. Sometimes I wonder if this is just a lot of busywork. However, for someone like me, the notes I make could help me get up to speed on my projects the next working day, especially if you deal with multiple projects or tickets at the same time.
What do you think about the practice?

@annaleen Were they English speakers? My native language is highly inflected and has no neutral gender, so it's very easy for me to slip and mis-attribute a binary gender to someone. I did it once to you (once again, I'm sorry) even if I had seen you complain about it before. BTW there is a proposed reform to add a neutral gender to the language, but it's harder than using singular they.

@augustocc Discurso à parte, você acha que Threads é ou não motivo para as instâncias usarem o modo seguro?

Fiquei com a impressão de que, se alguém precisa bloquear alguém para se proteger de comportamento nocivo online, essa pessoa precisa do modo seguro para o bloqueio funcionar

Sem o authenticated fetch, aka modo seguro, você bloqueia uma instância e ela segue seus usuários sem dizer que ela é ela.

An SUV veered into the bike lane to pass someone else just as I was coming up beside on my bike. I gave him an "I'm disappointed" head shake, and the next time I passed him he rolled down the window and screamed "EAT MY AH*!!" Very normal and cool reaction! 🙃

No Brasil a gente enche o peito para falar que tem sistema de saúde, e que os Estados Unidos têm pouca saúde para um país rico.

Ambos são verdade! É só ver o gráfico abaixo. No entanto: a mortalidade materna no Brasil é o dobro desse número aí. Sem contar com as mortes maternas indiretas. Sem contar que na pandemia esse número mais que dobrou.

@kcarruthers The country not having a lot of money means there's only so much we can do, even if generally the public health system is reasonably efficient and well meaning. Plus, our society is very unequal, which complicates things

    @manualdousuario o que me lembra de alguém que não faltava português sendo atendido na alfândega brasileira por alguém que não falava inglês. O funcionário usou um tradutor em modo texto, e isso foi antes do tradutor da Google. O programa traduziu Rio de Janeiro por January River ou algo assim, a sorte do gringo foi ter espiado no texto original para entender que lugar era aquele

    Esse é um outro tipo de obsolescência programada: a de quem vai ficando pra trás no mundo dos padrões e das convenções.

    No caso, os carros brasileiros que desde 2011 começaram a vir com recursos on-line via 2G e 3G, e que agora ficarão desconectados quando as operadoras seguirem a programação nacional de desligamento dessas duas tecnologias, de agora até 2026.

    Evoluir padrões de telecom é o certo, e o espectro de rádio é limitado, mas quem vai sobrar é o consumidor.

    ⌨️ Acompanhei 2 transições de teclas.

    Em ~1995 começou a ser popular divulgar endereço de e-mail, e muita gente não sabia o que era a @, nem onde ficava, como era o nome e pra que servia.

    Logo depois veio a popularização da web, e aí toda uma geração de alfabetizados no DOS precisou aprender q a "barra do computador" era a / e não a \ (que pra eles jamais foi contrabarra).

    Pra completar, tinha os vindos da datilografia sem passar pelo DOS, que viam barra como sendo o espaço.

    @augustocc não sei… já vi o contrário, de antes da Web falar barra invertida e me perguntarem qual era a barra certa. Quando a gente escreve, a barra é a mesma da Web e do Unix, mas fora do computador acho que pensa a existência de duas barras

    I find it outrageous and incredibly offensive how often subtitles are censored.

    I've experienced it on broadcast TV. On Amazon. On YouTube. And elsewhere.

    Deaf people do not need swear words hidden. Those of us with hearing loss don't suddenly decide, "Ah, yes, because I can't hear fully, I don't want to experience swearing anymore."

    Stop censoring our content!

    @localzuk Never noticed this before, but I believe when you say subtitles are being censored. Just adding something about audio: sometimes it's censored too. Once a video from a biologist on YouTube had to jump around not being able to say "moist" (or was it "wet"?). I've seen Hollywood movies removing the voice from a scene to stop at one f-word in the whole movie. Another time the actor dubbed itself so that "you're so full of shit" would become "you're so full of it".
