Also a random plug for a piece of commercial software, which I almost never do, and that's a testament to how good this one is.

MagicPlan is amazing. It's a contractor's mapping swiss army knife, but its huge party piece is the augmented reality mapping function. I mapped out three rooms in 5 minutes flat, with dimensions accurate within a couple inches (and 5 more minutes with a laser meter gets it to sub-inch).

I'm tired of the NHL refusing to grant a team license to a Canadian city but instead opting for yet another place in the American South.

Come on! Atlanta cares nothing about hockey, so why is Bettman trying to put a team there for the third time? Meanwhile, Quebec City isn't even being given an opportunity.

What are the arguments for and against making one's lecture materials (hand outs, presentations) publicly available on one's website?

I've never met Jeff Speaks, but his philosophy of language and mind handouts posted online have helped me so many times with trying to understand something. Now that I have tenure I kind of want to pay it forward.
But this isn't done very often, so I worry there are downsides I am not taking into account. Thoughts?

Fear of being fired may indicate a toxic environment. Here’s an example.

Retail operations were stopped by a brief network misconfiguration about a week after I was hired. As the Director of Infrastructure, I called in my Senior Network Engineer and asked him what happened. The outage was caused by a person – that he wouldn’t name.

I asked, “Why on earth won’t you tell me who did it?”

He replied, “It was an innocent mistake. They didn’t know it would have that effect, and I don’t want them to get fired for it.”

Wow. This guy didn’t know me, but I now knew something about the culture I had inherited from my predecessor.

I said, “I have no intention of firing this person. I want to make sure they’re educated about what happened, and understand good procedure for next time so we can avoid a duplication. By talking with this person, I can also find out if this is a broader issue that other people need to learn about. And this gives them an opportunity to help me understand what training they might need to help them grow in their job.”

Mistakes will be made. Operations will be affected. But you don’t fire good people for honest mistakes.

Willful negligence? Bye. But not for honest mistakes.

When people make honest mistakes, the manager is more likely to be the point of failure, for not providing adequate training.

THE LESSON
If you’re in an environment where you’re afraid you might get fired for doing your best…
If you’re given responsibilities without adequate training, and you’ll be blamed for failure…
That place is toxic.
It won’t get better with time, unless new leadership is brought in.
To achieve contentment, you need to move on.

@kfet @fifonetworks Friendly clarification: the “who” is important, but only useful inasmuch as it helps you establish the “why”.

After a thorough inside and outside audit with my thermal camera (FLIR), things look pretty good for my thermal envelope. (did not check the attic, however). Interestingly enough, the most obvious heat loss (aside from a wall panel and roof area missing insulation) is along the bottom of the building slab.

lkngrrr,
@lkngrrr@hachyderm.io avatar

@ai6yr Wood floors leak like sieves. If you go after insulating it, be careful that you set up the vapor envelope right so that you don’t get condensation between your floor and the insulation that will rot your flooring.

Traffic was backed up way into Somerville in front of my apartment this morning in .

Turns out that the only backup was due to transit cops deciding they knew how to direct traffic better than the lights.

If you truly cared about the traffic due to the underpass, you don’t fuck with the light timing. You aggressively ticket anyone blocking the box and fuck down anyone turning left from the right lane. Boom, traffic unfucked.
