As someone whose previous line of work was in the hotel industry, I have to say I find it very funny how many people, with the backlash against Airbnb, are just now discovering that extended stay hotels with full kitchens and multi-bedroom suites exist.

Just remembered another minor tech hype from a few years ago when Silicon Valley douchebros wanted to sell everyone on wireless charging at a distance (like plug something into outlet and it uses magical waves to beam power to your phone and laptop)

Wireless charging, “why don’t you make faster robots”, and “make a Kiva-sized Roomba” are my top 3 most irritating feature requests that I need to find the time to just write wiki pages for already.

The Hebrew University suspends Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, an Israeli-Palestinian faculty member.

She is accused of "anti-Zionist statements".

The university president demanded that she leave her tenured position.

In his letter, President Asher Cohen specifies that Shalhoub-Kevorkian signed a petition calling the actions in Gaza "a GENOCIDE", and Israel "an OCCUPYING power".

He says that since she refuses to resign, he suspended her for the "safety" of the students.

I don’t miss living in San Francisco, though I feel deeply fortunate that it’s an experience I got to have.

Friendly reminder to go get a library card.

You may not even have to physically enter the library! I hold a card that I use to borrow books in the Libby app (to send to my Kindle) and read periodicals in PressReader. And I’ve never been in a branch.

And boyo, let me tell you librarians are FOCUSED on their mission. If you want to read something, or are having trouble accessing something, they are ON. IT.

Sometimes in academia, people use the term "open source" to mean that the code is publicly available. To many in the community, "open source" means a lot more.

  1. What should we call prototype research code that accompanies a paper that is made public?

  2. What should research code include, at bare minimum, when shared publicly? (README, docstrings, requirements..)

  3. What is the minimum to actually make something "open source", beyond just publicly posting?
