Trying to put the genie back in the bottle.

Smartphone or not, the Internet is not going to suddenly become unavailable to kids. If they can't communicate by smartphone, they'll do it in a long list of online sites instead.

Regulation and monitoring of social media is a much better solution.

Why is the microphone used by the train manager so bad on the Class 800 GWR train?

It isn't the speakers. The automated announcements are crystal clear. But as soon as a real person talks, it's like they're underwater and sucking a gobstopper.

Thames Water epitomises what I hate about the current model of capitalism. Not only should they not exist at all, but they have a weird ownership structure... And the media fall for it.

We keep hearing about how "Kemble Water Group" owns Thames Water. Except? It only seems to exist to manipulate the way companies have to behave in the UK. They don't own anything else. Just a series of companies all specifically there to deal with Thames Water.

What a truly awful woman Amanda Spielman is.

There's literally no need for her to be giving interviews. There's no need for her to double down on a job she no longer has.

She still seems to ignore the fact that the lead Ofsted inspector was seen as a bully.

She should be ashamed. All this does is hurt Euth Perry's family and friends further.

The Tories would have them in workhouses if they could.

So, it runs 52 sailings a day, except Sundays and bank holidays.

And that serves "more than" 100k passengers a year.

Some quick maths shows that it carries an average of 6.3 people, let's round up to 7 to be generous, per sailing.

No wonder it isn't viable!

Seems like they need to reduce the number of sailings and the size of the vessels!

  1. When people say the US/UK won't be able to "pay off" debt, what do they think those debts have to be paid off WITH? Gold bars?

Govts stopped hoarding and borrowing gold long go - economics textbooks haven't figured that out.

  1. When people say govts need "revenue" before they can build roads, provide health care or bombs etc, ask them where they think banks get the money they loan out?

Hint: banks get the money out of thin air. That's what "modern money" is.

localzuk,
@localzuk@ohai.social avatar

@fidel @dcjohnson @schrotie but what is it they are paying it off with when they can create that money by typing it into existence?

The govt needs some money, the BoE creates it and gives it to them. We own the BoE, so we effectively borrowed money from ourselves. To pay it back? Why is it they can't just type that into existence, too?

Yes, I know about hyperinflation, so there are limits, but the concept still remains.

localzuk,
@localzuk@ohai.social avatar

@fidel @dcjohnson @schrotie the Bank of England currently holds 25% of all our debt via the Asset Purchase Facility. So, we literally owe £671bn of our debt to ourselves.

Israel has killed in 6 months 3 times more Palestinians than the Russians have in 2 years in Ukraine, 70% of which were women and children.

I see no reason why Russia should be ban from the Paris 2024 Olympics and Israel wouldn't...beside the usual double-standard "get out of any situation creepy as it might" free card.

localzuk,
@localzuk@ohai.social avatar

@tuban_muzuru @MMRnmd @cchiaruttini Israel. Might not have had people directly in Gaza but they control its borders is imports, the ability of its people to come and go, it's links to the sea, the list goes on. It has been rolled multiple times by the UN that Gaza and the West Bank are militarily occupied territories under international law.

You can't just ignore that.

localzuk,
@localzuk@ohai.social avatar

@cchiaruttini @tuban_muzuru @MMRnmd no? Does the action of a small number of militant crazies justify the death of over 32,000 innocent people, mostly women and children?

The fact that you seem to think one bad act justifies another is sociopathic.

localzuk,
@localzuk@ohai.social avatar

@cchiaruttini @tuban_muzuru @MMRnmd at this point, it's irrelevant. What matters right at this very moment is minimising further loss of life. Getting aid in to Gaza.

Yet Israel is purposefully preventing it by refusing to work with UNRWA, only allowing small amounts through border posts, etc... they've been ordered by the ICC to let aid in, but still refuse to.

We now have a mammade famine affecting a couple of million people.

Whatifs about Hamas are a distraction tbh.

localzuk,
@localzuk@ohai.social avatar

@cchiaruttini @tuban_muzuru @MMRnmd Hamas aren't doing that. Israel are doing that all by themselves.

The current education minister and an ex minister seemingly conflating criticism of the Israeli government with all Jewish people.

Is that not, under the IHRA definition, a form of antisemitism? It is definitely a form of extremism.

At the very least, it's disingenuous behaviour. Criticising the government of Israel is not a blanket criticism of the Jewish people.

There are still people pushing the "self-defence", "antisemitic" narrative.

Let's get a few things straight.

The term for slaughtering tens of thousands of defenceless people who have nothing to do with any attacks on you isn't self-defence, it is genocide.

Deliberately starving people who have nothing to do with any attacks on you isn't self-defence, it is a crime against humanity.

Valid criticism of the Israeli state is not antisemitic it is not a criticism of all Jews.

localzuk,
@localzuk@ohai.social avatar

@JeanPDeliet @Glencoe this is a really common response by supporters of Israel. It's what's called "whataboutism".

It also ignores that on nearly every other case, the international community, our governments, are doing something to try and stop it. But when it comes to Israel, we just give them more guns.
