Our commitment to the fediverse is here to stay.

Today, we launched our new Mastodon instance. It will ensure a privacy-focused space to engage with and get the latest from our Commissioners, departments, and the official voices of the Commission.

We want to thank @Mastodon for stewarding us and helping us make this possible.

Fostering European digital players is vital to our strategy for a stronger .

This is a unique opportunity to grow the community even more. Let's get there!

Hi @nick! Thank you for your questions! Our old instance was created, hosted and managed by @EDPS as part of a pilot project for a Mastodon server. As the pilot project was coming to an end, we decided to build on its success by setting a permanent instance, ensuring the continued and uninterrupted presence of our institution on Mastodon. The new instance is hosted and managed by the European Commission and has no expiry date.

I'm sick of justifying ethical behavior in terms of profit. We use phrases like "adding alt-text brings more customers to your site" or "protected bike lanes increase revenue for local businesses."

You should add alt-text descriptions to images because it helps people.

We need to build bike lanes because it makes cities safer and more accessible.

Reduce carbon emissions because it's the right thing to do! Discussing these things in purely economic terms misses the point.

‘As you go about your business – shopping, walking, playing a sport, riding a subway – someone may notice that glint of silver behind your ear, or that almost-imperceptible plastic wire entering the pinna…’

And this is when the magic happens. The fact someone can see your hearing aid makes you an advocate for addressing your hearing loss.

Because I’ve worn hearing aids since the age of six, hiding them has always felt pointless.

I love having short hair anyway…but I also hated when I did go through a phase of having it slightly longer (a bob) having to ‘out’ myself most days to strangers as being deaf. I just want people to see them and not make a big deal about it, which 80% of people do.

But I guess now in middle age, people around me will be losing their hearing too and if I can silently persuade them to get help, that’s ok

UK Politics

It's now impossible to have a UK General Election on May 2 with the Mayor and Council elections. So it looks like being October on a date that will make Uni Student votes difficult due to registration problems at the start of term.

The Council, Mayor (2-May) and General Elections (Oct) this year are really important. Tell your family, friends, colleagues to get registered, get Voter ID, apply for proxy or postal vote if necessary. Help them do this.

VOTE!

If you teach someone how to program, you can frustrate them for a lifetime.

There are still people pushing the "self-defence", "antisemitic" narrative.

Let's get a few things straight.

The term for slaughtering tens of thousands of defenceless people who have nothing to do with any attacks on you isn't self-defence, it is genocide.

Deliberately starving people who have nothing to do with any attacks on you isn't self-defence, it is a crime against humanity.

Valid criticism of the Israeli state is not antisemitic it is not a criticism of all Jews.

New Voter ID rules not widely known and detail not understood. The list of suitable ID is not fully intuitive.

Also there will be requirement to reapply for postal votes.

Check now and tell you your friends.

Trump has less than a week to arrange a $454 million bond. There are 331.9 million US citizens. If each American spends only $1.37, then we can all buy a cheap chocolate bar to enjoy while we watch the State of New York seize Trump's properties.

Last night's by election results are more about the collapse of the Tory vote, then a resounding desire for Labour.
"Labour's concern is . . . that voters are not really moving their way but are so disillusioned with politics that they are staying at home. 'The message on the doorstep was the same everywhere I went', said one Labour Activist. 'Voters hate all of us'.

And they have good reason to, neither party is offering to change the miserable status quo. In a GE Tories likely to vote, and disillusioned Labour voters stay home. End the duopoly
