Do you have any experience or recommendations on using the note taking method?

Yeah, I have no interest in Obsidian. I'm fine with using wiki style applications or for .

Not sure I'll commit to the discipline of Zettelkasten... but I've been aware of the concept for a while and it appeals to me.

Good for them for standing their ground and not caving to pressure to sell.

Weird situation all around, as the ban really doesn't mean anything with over 200 days to appeal and no action taken to keep American people from using TikTok in the meantime.

I think TikTok is stupid and I have no plans of ever using it... but banning it ?!?!

It would be great if regular people cared and stopped using ... but most don't seem to care or have any curiosity about alternatives.

I do sell quite a few refurbished computers with , but it is tiny numbers compared to the Windows computers I sell and work on.

It is true that a small, but growing, number of people are curious about , both with technology and life in general.

Was good to see that desktop usage is now over 4% worldwide.

matthew,
@matthew@social.retroedge.tech avatar

We almost have this with the Cinnamon desktop, as the start menu, window controls and shortcut keys are pretty much the same as what regular people loved and were familiar with on Windows XP and Windows 7.

I really do think it is a mindset issue and that no matter how hard you try, people go with what everyone else is using. If that's Windows, then that is what they use.

It is an unthinking mentality.

I do believe that independent video creators have done immense service in challenging this mentality as now it is somewhat likely that people have seen at least some tech videos of people using or recommending alternatives to Microsoft Windows, most prominently Linux.

So the tide is changing... just frustrating slow for me as I have been using Linux for 20 years now.

matthew,
@matthew@social.retroedge.tech avatar

If you are coming from Windows, I do highly recommend the Cinnamon desktop.

With Linux, you get more choices... which can bring confusion because you aren't used to that with Windows.

The Cinnamon desktop environment is one of perhaps six major desktop environment options, with many more less used options available, too.

Cinnamon is the desktop environment developed by Linux Mint, so is default with that, but you can install and use it easily on many Linux "distos" (distributions of software that are bundled together).

Linux Mint Debian Edition is a good place to get started.

Server SAS disks are expensive! However, it could be worth getting a few to increase my storage to make my new Proxmox server worthwhile.

matthew,
@matthew@social.retroedge.tech avatar

Used SAS HDDs can be fairly inexpensive. If you server already has SAS connections, it would probably be worth using them.

I've been getting a lot out of Proxmox lately. It really does make hosting services, for ourselves and others, much easier.

I am also starting it to use it at one of the places I do SysAdmin contracting.

I really hate how you have to post something during "peak hours" on here otherwise, nobody is going to see your post.

matthew,
@matthew@social.retroedge.tech avatar

I sometimes schedule a post. We got that feature after updating to the current (or recent) version of the soapbox frontend with Pleroma.

I also often boost (retweet) my own posts later on at a different time of day.

Simply click the link in the official post to… wait… is that a Linkedin link that requires a Linkedin account?

I noticed the LinkedIn profile link, too. A strong link with BigTech.

Yes. LinkedIn used to be valuable, but now I just get lots of what I consider to be "SPAM notifications" from my LinkedIn account.

It has very much turned into something like Facebook, but supposedly for business and career building.

Microsoft purchased LinkedIn back in 2016, so almost eight years ago already. I had an account before it was purchased by Microsoft.

As I juggle both a Linux and FreeBSD server - is there a real good reason to pick one shell vs others? They naively seem similarly capable, and it's more a matter of just picking one with good tutorials and running with it? I'm hardly a shell-scripting wizzard.

I'm trying ZSH, as it seems a bit more in line with the Unix way of thinking and is MIT licensed.

Bash is just there on most of the servers I manage and I haven't yet changed it.

I've been doing more research on email servers and email hosting.

It would be great to talk with a Sys Admin who handles email for multiple domains and clients.

I am working with a company who has been doing web design and hosting for their web design clients since the '90s.

They hosted their email starting way back when and have been using the same email server pretty much ever since. It needs to be replaced soon.

The question is what to replace it with.

Host our own? And all the complications that come with that.

Manage the email but host somewhere else with a company that specializes in email? Such as MXroute:

https://mxroute.com

Host our own email IMAP accounts, but use a separate service for sending mail so we don't have to worry about deliver-ability?

Let me know if you have experience with a similar situation.

#sysadmin #email #imap #smtp

matthew,
@matthew@social.retroedge.tech avatar

Yeah, it'd be great to just use something else instead of the current email system.

I was thinking about as a having potential to do that while driving on my way home this evening.

matthew,
@matthew@social.retroedge.tech avatar

For business reasons, I think I am stuck with figuring out a solution for traditional #email.

I share your sentiments about having and using viable replacements.

#xmpp seems like it has so much promise, but there's doesn't seem to be much movement toward it. We self-host a #prosody xmpp server, so have some experience with it, but not a lot.

I'm running out of time. If I don't have a job in 6 weeks, I am truly fucked. I'm applying to everything I can find that I'm remotely qualified for, and mostly hearing crickets or "fuck you, we aren't moving forward." I've had two entire interviews since September 8. If you're somewhere that needs a REMOTE (willing to travel to client sites) security analyst/pentester/threat researcher at a senior (or even mid) level and you haven't already posted the position on job sites, please let me know. I am very good at what I do, I just need someone to give me a chance to do it.

You are wearing a pink mask, use impolite (potentially unprofessional ) language in your posts, and advocate for violence in your profile.

Most people would understand why you are having difficulty finding employment.

I recommend focusing on freelance and contract work so you can do productive short term jobs with your skill set.

You didn't ask for my input... but you did post about your situation, so there's that.
