The AQI is 89!! Way above healthy limits and these people decide to have a picnic!

Please send us in Alberta some rain and common sense!!

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@blake @dansup Counterpoint: that's not a "strenuous activity" and many people don't have a meaningful difference between "inside air" and "outside air" depending on their living situation etc etc so maybe we shouldn't judge too much based on a picture (that's all the context I have on this, anyway).
Should I have forced my kids to not ride or walk to school this week?

Instead of AirBNBs can we have aparthotels offering small but reasonably nice rooms with private bathrooms, plus a (shared or private) kitchen annex please?

The reason a lot of people go for AirBNBs when traveling is because it's much cheaper to cook for oneself than eat out.

AirBNBs are a horrible solution to this problem though, as their owners compete for apartments with people who need a place to, you know, live.

Hostels exist, but they do not offer the level of privacy and basic comfort.

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@rysiek As someone who has stayed in AirBnBs (and other similar things) I agree with this: having a shared kitchen of some sort would be great (presumably making the rental cheaper than having N kitchens).

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@rysiek @JamesLonghurst Or "hostel".
(Lots of them now have private rooms)

A friend is trying to decide whether to join a startup that plans to train LLMs on the writing of particular individuals so people can chat with their loved ones after they're gone. I said, "That's pretty fucking macabre." My friend said, "That's what I thought, but the founder asked me why it was different from re-watching old family movies and I don't have an answer." My friend has lost people to AIDS, cancer, and dementia and still misses them; I honestly don't know what to think…

Interesting to see that this "Snake" malware is pitched as being cross-platform, but all the focus is on its impact on Windows: https://media.defense.gov/2023/May/09/2003218554/-1/-1/1/JOINT_CSA_HUNTING_RU_INTEL_SNAKE_MALWARE_20230509.PDF Wonder what it might look like on Linux... and what vulnerabilities it exploits to get there.

I'm now backing up all my github repositories to my NAS, using @charmcli's soft-serve new mirroring feature.

Now I always have, in my network, an eventually up to date copy of the repos I need :)

TLDR: I can pull/clone/etc even if GitHub is having issues, and push later ✅

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@suchipi @caarlos0 There's "gitolite" too, which I run on a VPS so that I can just blindly push all my repos with an alias before going remote (and not have to think about stuff like "should this be public?")

(Doesn't replace the above but might compliment it, depending on use-case). I've had zero problems with for years, it "just works".

"Officer-involved shooting" is a euphemism for "officer shot someone" -- and it's used, by police and journalist, to make reality fuzzy.

If all journalism organizations agreed to, as this commentary advises, abolish the "Exonerative Tense” in headlines (and I'd add, articles as well), journalism would be much improved.

Outside of the occasional snarky comment on shenanigans or sharing of an article or two, I won't be posting much on the Alberta Election.

However, please watch this brief video by Barry Morishita of the Alberta Party.

His words resonate here. Though we need to get rid of Danielle Smith, there is no accountability or governing effectiveness if we ping-pong between two parties.

A minority govt with a moderate third party is progress.

https://vimeo.com/822565708

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 I think the problem is way, way deeper than that.
I don't know what "policy screwup" you're imagining, but nobody knows or talks about any policies.

It's orange vs. blue.

Ask anyone who "hates" some party to name a single policy (of that or any other party).

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 (Also, cool: but fix it after this election please ;)

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 I really don't see how yet another "center-right" party helps any of this. We need some actually-left style parties if you want to expand the acceptable debate in ("Overton Window")

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 The NDP is also centrist.
(What do you think is different about the Alberta Party?)

There's no "left" in Alberta currently: there's the NDP + Alberta party milling somewhere around the center and a far-right UCP trying to turn us into Florida.

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 What is a "definitely left" policy ever held by the Alberta NDP?

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 Yeah, I think we mostly agree -- except I'm saying we need more left voices so I'd way rather see a "clearly different" party rather than the Alberta Party (which AFAICT is largely similar to the NDP).
