Anyone else struggling to see any prospects for turning things around? I will keep on trying to do what I can. Of course. But 2024 is challenging.

Last year did a post about how I wasn’t motivated by hope but by . I now realise i got that wrong. Hope isn’t just fluffy “things will be alright”. Hope is some flicker of belief that you and others can change things; I did, actually, have “hope”. Less now, but will keep going.

@pvonhellermannn Things are going the same way they have been, and I doubt they will change. The tropics and subtropics are trending less and less habitable, although in the main, the biological productivity (rice, and other arrangements for multiple-per-year cropping) required to sustain the highest population densities in the world remains (although that is also under threat). Temperate and warm-temperate cropping systems are going completely haywire due to unpredictable moisture and temperature régimes.

It’s bleak and getting bleaker. Even among the wreckage, someone is going to scrape together an existence, but that itself will be bleak.

Who should be software packaging is a tough problem, I can see the value in distros pushing for better changes downstream, encouraging upstream to change (double click in ) but then I see cases like KeepassXC where the Debian package is now by default broken, actively damaging the reputation of upstream but then I remember where upstream was left unchecked and hid bad code in plain sight and I go back around in a circle.

This morning our gardening group gave away a lot of cuttings to a family nearby. We had been nurturing the plants over summer. We also gave away plants that my mother no longer wants.

Gardening can be an incredibly cheap hobby if you know a bit about plants. Many gardeners have piles of black plastic pots they no longer want and some plants like pelargoniums (geraniums) are easy to grow from cuttings. I pick up cheap potting soil from a supermarket as the easy to grow plants don't really care about what they grow in.

I just found out about a local plant shop whose owners have become completely deranged with fears about the Chinese Communist Party, and several yelp reviews of their store tell sales of being thrown out because the owners became suspicious that they were spies.

I want to make up shirts that say "C.C.P. -- California Commission on Plants" and go in there with a friend and start measuring their plants with calipers and taking notes in a notebook

@GhostOnTheHalfShell This makes me wonder why irrigation was allowed to fester and become such a big thing as it has. It should have been nipped in the bud for broadacre crops early on, and only allowed for subsistence cropping (i.e. backyards and “”homesteads””) in the desert states (which if I’m not mistaken is CA, NV, AZ, NM, CO, WY, OK, and TX). The crop failures due to dry years should’ve been a thing planned for early on.

I'm seeing a few posts blaming France for the deportation of Doctor Ghassan Abu Sittah from this country yesterday.

This isn't strictly true.

Germany, in April, issued a Schengen wide ban on the good doctor which, unfortunately, means that France, and ALL other Schengen countries are legally obliged to follow.

The conversation needs to be had with Germany about overturning this law, not with France.

melanie,
@melanie@bv.umbrellix.org avatar

@FloydyStu It’s effectively Germany interfering with another country’s politics.
