"Trudeau’s “sunny ways” and nerd-dad version of politics lost its charm slowly and then suddenly — tested year after year by scandals and predictable fracture points in Canadian politics, such as Quebec wedge issues and culture wars around energy, only to disintegrate more decisively thanks to an inflation crisis that opened the way for an Angry Man alternative."

Every morning news has been talking about Canadian citizens in the Gaza Strip, telling us that they aren't being permitted to leave.

Permitted by whom? Egypt, Israel, Hamas or some other power?

should not be reporting this story and leaving that key point out.

My first political memory was the election of in 1984. I won't claim to have followed that closely for the next few years, but I remember in 1988, in elementary school, that we all kept journals of where the leaders were and what they were promising. That was the Free Trade election, and as I recall I decided that free trade would be good for Canada. (No, I didn't really know anything about economics at the time.)

Alberta no longer pursuing plan to dump RCMP for provincial police
https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/alberta-no-longer-pursuing-plan-to-dump-rcmp-for-provincial-police-force

I live in a province with a provincial police force. It works fine. But the transition difficulties of setting one up for Alberta were obviously a major issue.

Hmm. Is backing away from all hot-button issues, or has she picked just one on which she'll concentrate? It's generally unwise to battle on all fronts all at once.

The verdict brings justice for the victims and their family, even if the pain and horror of this crime can never be undone. All Canadians must stand against Islamophobia and hatred of any kind."

One of my fundamental objections to is illustrated in this quote from @justinling's recent article about the current PM:

"He was vowing to replace Canada’s electoral system, which tended to give parties power disproportionate to their level of support"

PR advocates believe that each party should have a number of MPs proportionate to the votes that party has received; but the relationship between power and proportion of MPs is inherently nonlinear.

"How did so many of the best-educated young people in the West come to believe the world’s only Jewish state is illegitimate? It is clear that social media, and especially TikTok’s algorithms, are shaping the worldview of our youngest and future citizens. Effectively, this means the Chinese Communist Party is taking control of public opinion. Why we haven’t shut down this weapon of cold war manipulation is a mystery."

I learned on Thursday that can now invoke directly. The command I use is

latexmk -e '$pdf_previewer = q/start evince/' -xelatex -pvc -quiet document.tex

(Some people add %O %S after evince, but those are unnecessary in my case.)

The command runs xelatex, creates a pdf, and opens it in ; and it continues running so that any change in document.tex appears in Evince shortly after it is saved.

I've also created an command to run the process.

"In an era of conflicting identities and the rise of identity politics, it is not surprising that the ancient scourge of antisemitism would find new expression. In recent months we have seen it flourish on the secular left and the nationalist right, as well as the usual corners of Islamism. Christians have a duty to see that it does not spread in our own communities."

They’re the ones lying in a hallway on a stretcher outside the critical care unit for hours on end. They’re the ones scrambling to find a family doctor. And they’re the ones who are increasingly struggling to buy groceries because sky-high inflation has eroded their spending power."

This "naïve belief" has a certain appeal, to me at least. But Prof. Ferguson is right: history shows us it's not so simple.

"The United States is a heartbeat away from a world war that it could lose. There are serious conflicts requiring U.S. attention in two of the world’s three most strategically important regions. I tend to think the lack of Russian success in Ukraine inclines Beijing to be more cautious about invading .

"Now, when Canadians are asked to rank their top concerns, the top spot is a duel between “economy” and “cost of living” — with climate change lucky if it can crack the top five. This is even true of young people; the one demographic that can usually be trusted to worry about the environment. In August, an Abacus Data survey of voters aged 18 to 27 found that the top concern, as picked by 73 per cent of respondents, was “the rising cost of living.” In fifth place [...] was “climate change.”"

If you oppose stock buybacks, how do you feel about dividends?

Stock buybacks and dividends are essentially the same thing, methods for corporations to transfer money to their shareholders.
