I would really love if every time I post something about AI bias on the internet I didn't have to (a) defend my credentials ("do you even code bro?"); (b) justify that yes, I know how AI works, and yes, I know what training data is; (c) clarify that more than one thing can be a problem at the same time (e.g., tech AND society); and/or (d) deal with people who insist racism has to be intentional.

Please teach my daughter many things (she's finishing her freshman year up there).

This sounds similar to how folks were treated back in 2016 when they (we) pointed out that trump was and is a fascist;

"You can't even define fascist!"
"Eco was talking about ITALIAN fascists!"
"Accusing trump of being a fascist is FASCIST!"

DEAL ALERT!!

XCOM 2 is currently -95% off on Steam.

At regular price, it is C$79.99. But today, it is C$3.99.

This is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It is a turn-based strategy game that not only has excellent reviews, many people regarded it as the best strategy game of 2016.

I just bought it!

2 is under water correct? I didn't actually finish 2 when I bought it new on floppies (could have been CDs). I did finish 1 though and I wouldn't have been able to do that with guided footballs. LOVED those things!

Made in 1979, Akalabeth: World of Doom is the oldest PC game I own. It was made by Richard Garriott (a.k.a., Lord British), and it was the precursor to Ultima.

Even though the copy I own runs on DOS, this wasn’t actually ported to DOS until 1998. It originally ran on the Apple II, and it looks better on Apple II – since it runs with colour graphics. Meanwhile, the DOS version is stuck in black and white.

Isn’t that bizarre? In 1998, DOS was capable of running 3D graphics with hardware acceleration. And yet, the DOS port of Akalabeth didn’t even have colour.

Despite the looks, Akalabeth is extremely playable today. Mostly, this is because almost everything still present in RPGs is present in this early, early precursor. If you’ve played Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls, or really anything with RPG characteristics, Akalabeth will feel familiar to you.

Another thing I find fascinating, though, is how once you enter a dungeon, there’s a lot that happens. You can explore rooms, collect loot, battle monsters. It’s impressive for such an old game!

Akalabeth is now FREE on GOG.com. I recommend picking it up:

I wasn't able to play it when it first came out because it was so advanced (and I was so poor) so I had the game and it just sat there. 2015 when the remastered version came out and I was much better off and loved it just as much!

I wish the remake of Ultima/Ultima Underworld had lived up to the original though :blobCat_sceptical:

If you enjoyed Kill Bill and other films or then you may enjoy

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt14846026/

It was a blast I have to say, nothing realistic about it and the protagonist apparently can't be killed but it's hyperbolic violence becomes comedic pretty early on and carries the show nicely.

If you like that sort of a bloody mess of course!

One of my favorite Wardruna albums is no longer available on Spotify for some reason and this is exactly the thing I've been talking about. I can still see the songs in my Playlist, but they're grayed out and unselectable. So I've paid for a thing that has now been taken away from me with no notice and no compensation.

mycotropic,
@mycotropic@beige.party avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1

This is why I buy CDs and burn them and THEN never, ever let iTunes see the original library files. There's a #WeirdAlYankovic song "Couch Potato" on Poodle Hat that iTunes deleted from my library because of a copyright dispute between Al and Eminem. I OWN THE CD, i have a PHYSICAL COPY of the song but iTunes deleted the file from my computer. I never let iTunes see my library again and use #VLC instead.

Also if you want Couch Potato in your rotation just name it something different, it will play anyway and if iTunes catches a whiff of your files it won't know to delete a missnamed file.

If you really want to troll Star Trek fans, tell them:

  • Star Trek V was the best movie ever
  • the novels, comic books, and video games are canon
  • D.C. Fontana was the real visionary, not Gene Roddenberry
  • TOS implies a dystopic vision of humanity, not utopic
  • the reason a Star Trek future is not bound to happen is because someone in Star Trek’s timeline travelled to the 1960s, got a job as a sci-fi writer by recalling their lived history, and this therefore has changed our timeline.

I submitted my dossier.

At this point they can promote me or I'll start applying for jobs outside of research but that process was so ridiculous that I'm more than a little disillusioned with my field. I got some wonderful letters of support and they're much appreciated but why the hell is academia like this?

I enjoyed being an electricians apprentice, it was boring and didn't challenge me at all but it paid the bills. Maybe I should go back to that since my loans are paid off and four years from now my youngest kid will be out of highschool.

Or I could stick around and try to find a treatment that changes the progression of COPD. Either way man.

It's not, a good guess though, in the same vein as pedagogy (teaching children) androgogy is teaching (teaching adults/leaders/men) from the Greek. I dropped the men and taught to adults!

Spouse and I have kinda settled into a nice routine where we listen to a podcast together immediately after putting sproglet to bed. We drink tea and listen to No Such Thing As A Fish. She knits and I play Rollercoaster Tycoon on my . Sometimes we light some incense. This is our transitional time of shifting gears between work/parenting and doing our own thing for the rest of the evening. It's very cosy and nice.

Between the occasional playing with mucky/oily hands because I have the gameDad with me in the car, and simply putting so much time on the joysticks, I've pretty much completely worn them out. Fortunately this Anbernic RG353V uses bog-standard Nintendo Switch style joycon joysticks, so I've ordered a pair of replacements that should be here tomorrow.

So I guess expect a little disassembly thread in the next few days :)
