I'm prototyping a fediverse sharing button. Anyone interested in giving it a try?

Feature highlights:

  • shows a logo of supported fediverse software
  • lets you share selected text
  • remembers the last fediverse domain used

Demo: https://fediverse-share-button.stefanbohacek.dev/

USA Today argues that “return to office” died in 2023. While 2023 was the year of some of the most aggressive RTO mandates since the pandemic it also seems we’ve hit the limit in people actively heeding the call to work from an office building.

38% of companies require full-time in-office work, down from 39% one quarter ago and 49% at the start of the year, according to software firm Scoop Technologies.

I personally think the benefits of WFH are too much to ignore.

@carnage4life RTO has everything to do with long term office contracts and nothing to do with employee efficiency or work outcomes. Indeed it is "we're paying for this, we need to see bums on seats to justify the cost" without wondering if it makes a positive difference. It doesn't, I get so much more work done now, and a lot fewer planes. Yay!

, 21 May 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman - and only the second person - to fly solo and without stops across the Atlantic.

She lands unexpectedly in Ireland. There’s some wonderful images of her here: https://joecampbellart.com/2015/03/12/amelia-earhart-in-ireland-solo-atlantic-crossing-may-21st-1932/

it's not a "cost of living crisis", it never has been. it is a result of austerity since 2010 with support for lower income people and families slashed in favour of reducing deficits. as a result people have become increasingly poor with record numbers of families in poverty and about 3.8 million people officially "destitute". that's fucking 1 in 17 people in the fucking UK!!! walk down the street and count every 17th person.

this is a total failure of government. it is not the sole responsibility of individuals to ensure they're affluent. it is a deal between the government and the people to ensure that citizens aren't left stricken. the tories have failed on this basic requirement.

honestly, if you're mulling voting tory at the next election, i beseech you to look at your fellow citizens and repudiate the tories and their policies.

While JWST was originally designed to see some of the first galaxies to form after the Big Bang, astronomers also use it to observe objects in our cosmic backyard.

Learn how JWST is exploring our solar system to answer questions like:
• How was the solar system formed?
• Where did the chemicals necessary for life on Earth come from?
• What are the icy small bodies in the outer solar system made of?
• How are planets around other stars like planets in our solar system?

Tell me the story of the last time you committed an act of kindness in 500 characters or less.

There’s nothing wrong with bragging about creating kindness. There’s nothing honorable about not sharing the joy of creating kindness.

We need to uplift and encourage people who create kindness in their daily lives.

So tell us your story. It doesn’t have to be something big. It can be something as simple as helping someone carry a bag of groceries.

How did you create kindness this week?

pavsmith,
@pavsmith@theblower.au avatar

@Mrfunkedude every now and then some oldies turn up to the hotel over the road, can't get their bags in, and the hotel doesn't notice. Dash downstairs, and after a moment of an unshaven and shoeless Aussie later... lift their bags into the hotel doorway. The look on their faces sometimes... awwww....

in 1724.

Premiere performance of Bach's St John Passion, BWV 245, at St. Nicholas Church, Leipzig.

Bach's large choral composition in two parts on German text, written to be performed in a Lutheran service on Good Friday, is based on the Passion, as told in two chapters from the Gospel of John (John 18 and John 19) in the translation by Martin Luther, with two short interpolations from the Gospel of Matthew.

In other news, Priority Pass is essentially worthless to me at this point, since everyone apparently has lounge access on offer via bank accounts as a free add on to other memberships, so there’s never any room. First world problems, but meh.

will employers simply say "no"? don't trust staff to actually work whilst at home. "i'm paying a fortune for this office and so it needs to be used!" (despite the financial equation not changing at all).

still, the "financial markets miracle" that was Canary Wharf is being sold off for apartment development.

it's an odd thing. give kids sparkling water and see what happens. my completely uninformed opinion, based upon being a fizzy water addict, is that kids will drink it because it is "interesting" in the mouth. also carbonators are cheap!

Belfast SSE arena now has amazon powered automatic magic till, where you pay a contactless £10 holding fee on the way in, take your drinks and walk out.
Only problem is it charged me a total of £40 for two drinks, instead of £13.80
Honestly not sure how to correct this as I've no receipts and not sure they do either. Have challenged the charge via my bank, will see how that goes. Otherwise it's small claims court I guess.
I wonder how often it makes mistakes, and how many people notice

pavsmith,

out on the balcony earlier and thinking what a beautiful, clear evening it is. then thought:

They were long and clear and there were lots of stars at night.

I could always see the Milky Way. haven't seen it for decades. what happened?

@sldrant i lived upcountry victoria in a tiny town. winters were the best. incredibly cold, clear days and nights. it was a big thick ribbon across the sky. must ask the brother, who lives in some kind of "stranger, you're trespassin' on my dirt farm" location if it is still good.

y'know, the government could process the asylum claims of these refugees and sort out the backlog instead of, it seems, trying to incarcerate them all forever.

has it evaded the govt that some people are honest to goodness refugees? yeah, it has.
