The best antennas for free live news, sports, and more: Expert tested https://zdnet.com/home-and-office/home-entertainment/best-tv-antenna/ by @sjvn

Today, antennas are making a comeback. Why? Two words: Free TV.

philbaker1,
@philbaker1@fosstodon.org avatar

@sjvn Hopefully ATSC 3.0/NextGenTV DRM doesn't end free TV as we know it. I'm glad that I live in a market (Memphis) that is still firmly in the ATSC 1.0 world.

I type this as my wife is watching Chicago Fire, recorded on our over-the-air Plex DVR weeks ago.

philbaker1,
@philbaker1@fosstodon.org avatar

@sjvn There's no technical reason why ATSC 3.0 can't build on the features of 1.0 and be even more awesome. Dolby Atmos, 4K HDR. Better signal reach. I was excited.

But after all the mergers, the few big companies owning local TV stations are asserting themselves. Fair use law dating back to the VCR era may go by the wayside. I hope I'm wrong.

Well, that sucks. Crucial.com and the ASRock B660M Pro RS motherboard manual both state that DDR4-3200 RAM should work.
It does not. box

@Tekchip I'll give that a try. But it never gets to the point where the EFI firmware is looking for a boot device. It just stops as if there is no RAM installed. The LEDs on my keyboard don't even illuminate, which I assume is tied to voltage on the USB ports. I noticed the CPU and chassis fans are not spinning consistently either.

The board supports 12th and 13th gen Intel CPUs. I'm using a 12th gen Core i3-12100.

philbaker1,
@philbaker1@fosstodon.org avatar

@Tekchip Yeah, four separate 16GB sticks, all Crucial UDIMMs.

Someone on Reddit had a similar issue with a B650 board. Said that letting it run for for 5 or 10 minutes to the let the RAM "train", then all was well. I haven't ever come across such a thing, but the last build I did was 5 years ago, a Xeon with ECC RAM. It just worked.

philbaker1,
@philbaker1@fosstodon.org avatar

@mangelucci @Tekchip The issue is that without initialized peripherals and no video, there's no way to update the BIOS on this board. Earlier ASRock motherboards apparently had a physical "Flashback" button on the motherboard that initiated a BIOS reinstall from USB. This one, unfortunately lacks that feature.

I've already received an RMA and shipping label from Newegg. I'm thinking I'll go with an ASUS board.

I used a Mac from 2005-2014. Today I installed Firefox on my wife's MacBook Air to help diagnose an issue. I literally couldn't figure out how to drag and drop the icon to install (no track pad buttons). Once installed, how do I instantly launch Firefox- hit the Command key and start typing Fire...? Nope. It's a longer process.

My point? (and GNOME in particular) is ready.

There is an option in to turn on rounded lower corners. Type about:config in the address bar, and search for
widget.gtk.rounded-bottom-corners.enabled and double-click to set to true.

I think it makes Firefox appear a little less out of place next to GTK4 apps on the desktop.

philbaker1,
@philbaker1@fosstodon.org avatar

@pino To be fair, it's just a cosmetic preference. I otherwise ❤️ the current GNOME desktop. To each their own though.

I think Firefox could use a GTK4 (or other modem GUI toolkit) refresh. But that would no doubt be quite an undertaking. For now, I'll be happy with small tunable tweaks like this. 🙂

I repeat this anecdote a lot so forgive me if you've heard it, but ...

... my Ukrainian-Canadian grandfather ran his dairy farm using a 1960s-era truck ...

which was by today's standards tiny: Lower-slung, small cab

But!

It was more usable than today's monstrosities

It had a longer bed than today's trucks; being lower-slung made loading/unloading easier

Again: He ran a whole-ass farm with this vehicle; drove over rough terrain

Few people need today's bloated, paramilitary trucks

philbaker1,
@philbaker1@fosstodon.org avatar

@mlanger @clive I don't think the @clive is criticizing those who choose a correctly-sized tool for the job. It's just that many truck drivers don't have such requirements. It's cosplay. Kind of like the industrial oven craze in kitchens a few years back.

I used to own a 2000 Chevy Silverado, which is closer in size to the current Chevy Colorado. Probably all that most suburban folks need.

The holidays are a great time for hobby coding. I added some QC checks to my METAR fetch scripts. If something's missing, it's logged and skipped, rather than burping sed errors to the log.

philbaker1,
@philbaker1@fosstodon.org avatar

One of my recent accomplishments was removing a dependency on gsed on FreeBSD. The script now works with BSD and GNU sed, no need to check for OS type. Obsoleting and removing code is very satisfying. 🙂

When I see a referred to as "Unix-like" in the same vein as , it rubs me a bit the wrong way.

Linus never called his kernel "Unix". And the "NU" in GNU is literally stands for "Not Unix". But "Unix-like" is apropos.

I understand the UNIX trademark and certification requirements. But calling the direct downstream work of Thompson, Richie, Joy, Kernigham, McKusick, "Unix-like" feels like calling the Pope "Catholic-like".

Splitting hairs, I know.
