No official status update yet, but a 0201Z image just arrived. Hopefully just a hiccup.

First thing that went through my mind... was this outage related to the solar storm? I don't feel qualified to even speculate. But the solar flux this evening isn't as high as the past two days.

The melodious sounds of a new (work) laptop, straining under weight of 11 and the requisite anti-virus software. Nice toasty air coming out of the vent. 🔥

Dell laptop fan running at near full speed.

@philbaker1 That must really chew up the battery. I recently upgraded my old Thinkpad with an SSD drive and new battery. I get hours of use now running Linux. I noticed the fan barely runs at all anymore.

philbaker1,
@philbaker1@fosstodon.org avatar

@elaterite It does. It typically lasts between 1 and 2 hours per charge.

The fan on my ThinkPad (running Fedora) hardly ever runs either. Cool and quiet. :)

As a longtime (now ) user, I couldn't care less what color the bubbles are in iMessage.

I do care that my texts to Android users are unencrypted. SMS is the telnet of messaging. It needed to die 10 years ago.

Apple is (purportedly) finally getting around to supporting . But I think the should nonetheless set a sunset date for .

@philbaker1 This is how it begins! Then one night, you're up late and stumble into Ebay and bid on a ZX81 and before you know it, you've accumulated a number of Ataris and you can't believe how much fun you're managing to squeeze out of their primitive capabilities.

MacRumors: Is 8GB of RAM Enough for a Mac in 2024?

No. Google Chrome’s app icon consumes 1.5GB RAM, before the browser is even launched.

@philbaker1 No. 8 GB is not enough.

Looking forward to incrementally improved font presentation in on . I have a personal guideline against buying a laptop or desktop monitor that requires fractional scaling to look correct. Fonts on GNOME already look good with integer scaling, in my experience.

And of course, this quote is worth repeating: "Text rendering differences are always subtle and, to some degree, a matter a taste and preference"

Lincoln, NE was 81 F at 3 PM. Relative humidity 9%. Winds gusting to 38 mph. This is west Texas weather in eastern Nebraska. 80+ degree weather was unheard of in my childhood, growing up in Omaha and Lincoln.

The record high for today is 79, which breaks a 128 year old record by 2 degrees.
