What is people's go-to travel plug adapter? I have one that works with most of the world's plugs, but it is quite bulky. I am thinking they have become more compact since I got mine.

philip,
@philip@mallegolhansen.com avatar

@simonbs I too am in the Skross camp, specifically the “Pro - World” model: https://www.skross.com/en/products/pro-world

Got like 5 of them from an employer 5 years ago. They’re bulky, but I’m never in doubt if I have the right adapter no matter where I go.

@thomasfuchs Any idea what that’s called? I figured it might be a 26 segment display since the basic version is a 7 segment display, but I’m not finding anything.

Politicians are always tax idiots.

“I want to eliminate the IRS, and I would like a flat . . . single rate,” said during a January 4 CNN town hall. “That is the ideal tax system.”

@law

philip,

@andrew @law Ironically, it’s usually their very own financial backers that benefit from the complexity.

If there was actually a flat, no corporate exceptions, no special deductions, tax rate, then presumably the billionaires would have to pay it as well.

Ah, it finally happened, I was bitten by a nasty date bug I wrote during my most novice Swift days. Visits are saved with a date corresponding to the current time, but when viewed in a time zone other than where you entered the visit, the date can display incorrectly. A seemingly unsolvable issue, because I have no way of knowing which time zone a user was in when they added a visit. 🫠

philip,
@philip@mallegolhansen.com avatar

@michaelsteeber Maybe you’ve thought of it, but since you have to make some kind of assumption as you don’t have data:

Maybe figure out which time zone the store is located in, and assume the time entered was in that time zone?

I’m going to for the first time in over a decade. Anyone have restaurant recommendations?

I’m not really into Mediterranean food, cooked fish, or haute cuisine.

I like sushi, steak, Korean bbq, and pho. “Fusion” / non-authentic food is fine.

Also, im looking for burrito, New York style pizza, and sandwich places.

philip,
@philip@mallegolhansen.com avatar

@Oreoshake I would avoid the Bobby Flay place, overpriced mediocre steak.

I’ve enjoyed Pampas at Planet Hollywood.

When you visit a foreign country, always take time to check out a grocery store. I guarantee you will see at least one thing that blows your mind compared to your home country.

Belgium: an entire wall of sprinkles for buttered toast in the morning, also the huge aisle of mayonnaise flavors to put on your fries, like hundreds of options

Western EU: eggs out in aisles unrefrigerated

Italy: unbelievably fresh and tasty fruit even in bodegas

Australia: TimTams come in a bazillion flavors

@mathowie And as a foreigner living in the US: The insane amount of cereal products and chips, are what stand out to me.

"What caused the Civil War?" is kind of an wild thing to ask a presidential candidate, though.

philip,

@evan It’s on the immigration test. Doesn’t strike me as wild to ask potential presidents the same questions as potential citizens to gauge their competence.

@evan Point taken. The question itself isn’t wild, but prioritizing it as the one you ask might be.

philip,

@evan More small, importantly not more by instance count, but more by a higher proportion of people use small fedi.

IMO that’s the way to ensure the balance of power doesn’t tip in favor of large actors.

Fun fact: you’ve probably heard about the Newag train DRM. Part of it was badly implemented and instead of checking if the date is >= 2021-11-21 it checks day of the month, month and year all separately.

So… they were working yesterday but not today.

Happy Newag train breaking day to everyone who celebrates!

philip,

    “Accept the reality that AI will destroy creative careers” sounds an awful lot like “accept the reality that crypto and NFTs are the future of commerce”

    In both cases we see:

    • Hype driven by companies and investors with vested interest in said technology
    • Grand predictions of the future and comparisons to disruptions like the internet
    • Obscure, complex tech that most people don’t use
    • Extreme resource consumption for tech to function
    • Fear and panic from media

    So its done! I finally released a fairly easy to install (from scratch) Hugo based Static Site generator with full ActivityPub support.

    It has step-by-step instructions on how to set it up for your own blog or static website.

    One of the coolest features for me, other than having your static site blog posts show up as posts in the Fediverse is the support for interacting with those posts. Any replies you leave, likes, or boosts will show up in the "comments" section of the website on the page associated with the post. How cool is that!
