Mathematics has many daughters. Nearly all are beautiful. Physics & Chemistry are dutiful & visit home often. Life science is always away on some exotic research trip, hardly has time to write. Three of the girls live at home: Statistics, Computer Science ... & The Other One.

Statistics spent some time in a sanitarium, no one talks about it. She's doing better now, dotes on mother. Computer Science puts on a suit each day for her Big Important Job. But she still never moved out. 1/ #ideas

For the past year or so, I’ve been using and enjoying the search engine Kagi. Its search results are…fine, no worse than others, and it’s ad-free, stated privacy as a primary goal, and seemed to have a better ethical sense than its competitors.

Or so I hoped.

Trad Wife memes are always like a traditionally attractive skinny blonde woman in a white dress, in a field of flowers, holding hands with their immaculate children. The text always says something like, Why are you working a job, instead of doing your true calling? This is Godly Motherhood!

This how I know these are made by people who have never been around children, or possibly even women, and also never had to worry about money.

@RickiTarr Of course. When your manly man has his back free to earn the sweet single income man money, everything is possible, even changing your dress 10x a day.

We are celebrating Christmas at partner's parents with the same raclette grill as 20 years ago - which is pretty impressive, but not quiet as much as the Voyager spacecrafts 😅 Voyager 2 was launched on August 20, 1977 - still working, still teaching us new things about the most external parts of the solar system.

With many thanks to @schnedan for the idea to draw Voyager :)

New blog post!

This one took weeks to write. It's about me finding a way to significantly reduce the power consumption of a Raspberry Pi Pico W working as a weather station, collecting environmental data.

I am also writing about powering the Pico using solar panels, and this time it's a success, my weather station can now run indefinitely, powered by the sun!

Direct generation of radio waves using a special generator:

Next super long wave Grimeton transmission on 17.2 kHz will be on Alexanderson Day July 6, tuning of the transmitter 8:30 UTC, transmission 9:00 UTC

Since it is in the audio spectrum, It can be received in Europe using merely a long wire and a sound card input! More specialized loop or active antennas are advisable.

Herb Greenlee and Mel Shochet, representing the DZero and CDF experiments, respectively, simultaneously submitted papers to Physical Review Letters OTD in 1995. They were announcing that their collaborations had discovered the Top quark at Fermilab.

@mcnees My reaction to these stability calculations went the opposite way, as a reason for pessimism: if there were a considerable TeV scale modification to the SM, our position at the metastability bound of the higgs self coupling would be pure coincidence and meaningless. Only if there is no serious modification to the SM below the GUT scale can I think of reasons why we would be near metastability, either anthropic, from symmetry as in our 2012 papers, or from RG like Wetterich/Shaposhnikov

Balloon WSPR Beacon upcoming

Dear Ham friends,
Weather permitting, on April 28. around 10 to 12 UTC, a student of mine will launch a weather balloon carrying a WSPR beacon on 20m in order to analyze the worldwide propagation as a function of altitude, based on WSPR report data.

It will probably broadcast our club call DL0WH or my own.

We'd be delighted if you turn on your receiver and see if you can spot us. Launch QTH will be Weinheim DL0WH.

Lake constance is 63km wide at its longest, and due to the curvature of the earth, this means that the center bulges almost 80 meters higher than the direct line between the shores. If you come to Da Capo restaurant in Lindau, you can now admire our calculation of this fact on their blackboard ;-)

Yeah, I realized I was SLACKING OFF on my video editing! (Although Kdenlive crashed 1 hour in rendering like 7 times now so that also doesn't help).

I just had mostly silent videos, but now I can add music, ambience, and the occasional sound effect! Along with TRANSition sounds~ :3

Here's a fun signal processing challenge that we invented during a hiking trip through cornwall 10 years ago:
At Lands End, there's the "Lighthouse" which emits an acoustic beacon consisting of regular loud beeps, presumably bc. this can be caught by sailors even in thick fog. Now, the question that occurred to us immediately: How far away from Land's End can you capture this sound with a microphone by using very steep FFT filters and convolution methods? Miles? Further?
