Please mention to your less well educated/willfully ignorant family and friends that it's worth heeding science on this one and wearing protective glasses if they're watching the eclipse.

There's PLENTY of BS flying around from... ahem not scientists... advising people to ignore all advice to do so.

Because while there's loud and proud confidence about it now, there will be zero, "Ignored science and watched the eclipse with my bare eyes and now I'm blind. CHECKMATE, LIBTARDS!" posts later.

My daughter: "You know, even if it's from fresh water, we still call it seafood?"

Me (blearily uncaffeinated): "Yeah, because fish food is different."

My daughter: "..."

Me: "...I'll see myself to the coffeepot."

@lilithsaintcrow I had a similar discussion with my 13-year-old, who was mulling over why they’re called seagulls even when see them but we live by a lake.

Fewer people are using Elon Musk’s X as the platform struggles to attract and keep users

@benjancewicz It would be terrible if his alleged genius, narcissism, conspiracy theory boosting and constantly incorrect predictions for how everything will work out, all end up with nowhere to go.

Q-Tips are one of those American products where every other brand is vastly inferior and I'll never understand why

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@feld I came across some alleged dollar store brand last year when visiting family that were wood in the middle bit, and they were quite something. Never did find any in the local stores, though.

Morning, all:
A few questions about migrating to a new instance:

  • Can one keep one’s follows and/or followers?
  • Does the older handle get retained, or is that/can that be deleted?
  • If it’s the former, can it be used in some practical fashion to direct people to the newer handle?
  • Any other questions I should be asking or stuff I should be considering with such a move?

I try not to be at least A LITTLE bitter when people are jazzed about it being Friday but because of the nature of my jobs, I’m working 23+ hours over tonight and the next two days.

My attempts at such usually fail.

But, sincerely, for those who get a typical break in their work routines, happy Friday.
Enjoy it extra for me. 🙂

@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@lukem Thanks.
I try to focus on the positive of at least getting paid for it, but yeah, it’s a downer at times.

reay,

@APBBlue I was genuinely torn between wanting to throw his cultists in with him in that post but didn’t want to feel any guilt for any of them who may actually do so and are irrevocably damaged by it. Whereas Trump’s gonna Trump, so 🤷‍♂️

Oof.. we just heard a loud bang from downstairs with our elderly neighbors so I called to ask if they needed help. Turns out they did since this time the woman had fallen down

Took some time to calm her and her husband down and checked for injuries, it seems they are lucky every time so far but I’m worried that will end some day..

At least she’s back in bed now :blobcathearts:

Also back to bed for me :blobcatgiggle: :pusheentired:

Last night I took the kiddo to see I Don’t Know How But They Found Me.

VERY impressive band. Hugely talented and very comfortable on stage.

See them if you get the chance.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

I should add this was at a small venue I’ve been to numerous times and I was disappointed that so many people still have zero clue about how much space they’re taking up, and a bewildering lack of awareness of/not caring about bumping into people.

Maybe I’m just hyper aware of it for myself, but I know when I’ve backed into someone, or bumped them, etc., and I a) apologize and b) strive to avoid it happening again.

Weird how so many others do neither, again and again and again.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@falcennial Not the first time I’ve heard this conclusion, which saddens me.

I get when you get brushed or bumped a bit by someone’s huge backpack and they don’t notice, because the thing weighs 80 pounds and that’s a relatively small sensation to detect.

But this one young halter-topped lady (no padding protecting her) was edging back so much that the corner my phone, which I was texting on, was pushing into her ribs.
HARD.

Yet zero acknowledgment or a self-preservation move away at all.

🤔🤷‍♂️

Your regular reminder that BMI is bullshit, it was invented 200 years ago by a guy who wasn't a health professional and only used white western European men in his study. It does not measure individual health, it does nothing more than tell you the average height to weight ratio of a white cis male. Basically useless.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@MnemosyneSinger @noam I had this reminder when I went to what is considered the best medical facility in the world for a specific operation. They said I’d need to lose fat before they could consider me, which I get, but then cited my BMI as the evidence for that conclusion, which made me wonder how they have such a glowing reputation.

Even logically the BMI is dumb. Muscle is more dense than fat. If I was a body builder, the BMI would suggest I was still unfit. 🤷‍♂️
