Last night I took the kiddo to see I Don’t Know How But They Found Me.

VERY impressive band. Hugely talented and very comfortable on stage.

See them if you get the chance.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

I should add this was at a small venue I’ve been to numerous times and I was disappointed that so many people still have zero clue about how much space they’re taking up, and a bewildering lack of awareness of/not caring about bumping into people.

Maybe I’m just hyper aware of it for myself, but I know when I’ve backed into someone, or bumped them, etc., and I a) apologize and b) strive to avoid it happening again.

Weird how so many others do neither, again and again and again.

Taking the kiddo to her first concert tonight. Young-ish band at an all-ages show.

Wondering what shirt I should wear to be the most embarrassing dad possible. Current pick is my Rush 2112 t-shirt.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@WagesOf No, but that’s a solid pick.

Thinking back for some reason to when I realized I wasn’t six feet tall — https://www.reayjespersen.com/blog-1/2022/05/30/wait-im-how-tall/ — and how when I told that discovery to one medical professional who had known me for years, she confidently confirmed that Oh, no, I certainly wasn’t six feet tall.

… and it turns out I’m a fraction of an inch shorter than six feet tall. Like, six with puffy hair, easily.

Adamant confidence about something that’s effectively indiscernible always makes me laugh.

#Amazon spent more than $3 million on anti-union consultants last year in its continuing effort to keep organized labor out of its delivery network, according to disclosures filed Saturday with the Labor Department.
The retail giant has been ringing up a large tab hiring “persuaders” who try to convince workers not to form unions. It doled out more than $14 million on such consultants last year as well”: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/amazon-anti-union-spending-2023_n_6606cd7ce4b07b59d64d0a42

There are days I wake up not looking my age.

Then there are days like today, when I look like I’m my own underslept older brother.

I’d be closely scrutinized at a border crossing, is what I’m saying.

Sorry Christians : you cannot steal this holiday. Go invent something original for once.

@galacticstone I remember at the trial, Johnnie Cochran tried to defend this image by saying it was just the Easter Bunny trying to help kids blow their noses.

Luckily the jury saw through that nonsense.

@TheBreadmonkey You make fun, sir, but dressing up as sexy eggs is in their Constitution. Doing so makes them patriots, and your idle comments mock those Freedoms.

I do.

I couldn’t make a crossword at all, let alone carve out negative space to make it a picture.

BUT.

If you’re going to do that, at least make it good.

This is not a happy Easter bunny.

This is a bunny with a Hitler moustache or who has seen something traumatizing.

Oh noes! YouTube is blocking my player for blocking ads!

taps on revanced manager

Better!

I'll start paying for when they give me enough control over discoverability to stop half my feed from being videos I've already watched and the other half being videos I've already clicked "not interested" twenty times.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@WagesOf What is it with places making money from websites when they can’t control even basic functionality of those sites?

I was looking on job posting websites recently and one of the slots per page was taken up with a “New To Canada?” ad.

I finally discovered I could click an X in the top corner of that ad to close it and make room for one more job posting per page.

But then?
THE AD COMES BACK AGAIN ON THE NEXT PAGE.
Like… what’s even going on?

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@WagesOf Yeah, not sure why it’s showing up at all, now that you mention it. If anything, I’ve got a couple of at blockers in play (needlessly doubling up on it… I should deal with that).

Watch a video about how to be more productive (/procrastinate less, etc.)

That video leads to another one and the same series. Or other interesting take on how to get more done in less time.

Cut to me having spent hours doing nothing but learning how to work more efficiently.

I am so intensely sick of people sending out forms in docx and other crappy formats that can't reliably opened without getting screwed up. God forbid someone actually learn to use a fucking webform. Surely we should have moved beyond this by now.

reay,

@Darkedge @Floppy I just don’t see the point in making users take multiple extra steps instead of just having a web form that they then keep on their end.

Well, this is a transcendent level of evil: Facebook bought a VPN company and deployed it, in part, to spy on its competitor's users.

https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/26/facebook-secret-project-snooped-snapchat-user-traffic/

It's a reminder that VPNs have their own risks, beyond technical ones if operated incompetently -- namely, that you have to trust the VPN company itself.

UPDATED to reflect which users were being spied on.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@DanielEriksson @dangillmor ISPs aren’t (that I’ve ever heard) vetted for privacy and data collection matters. There are VPNs — Proton, TunnelBear, IVPN and Mullvad as some examples — who take measures to demonstrably show that they ARE vetted.

People just need to care about their privacy enough to make good choices about such things.

MnemosyneSinger, to random

Your regular reminder that BMI is bullshit, it was invented 200 years ago by a guy who wasn't a health professional and only used white western European men in his study. It does not measure individual health, it does nothing more than tell you the average height to weight ratio of a white cis male. Basically useless.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@MnemosyneSinger @noam I had this reminder when I went to what is considered the best medical facility in the world for a specific operation. They said I’d need to lose fat before they could consider me, which I get, but then cited my BMI as the evidence for that conclusion, which made me wonder how they have such a glowing reputation.

Even logically the BMI is dumb. Muscle is more dense than fat. If I was a body builder, the BMI would suggest I was still unfit. 🤷‍♂️
