Pretty much all the Apple hardware seems to come with a default of 8GB of RAM.

What do you Mac users do when you need to open a third browser tab?! 🤔

ricard,
@ricard@ricard.social avatar

@fribbledom I miss the good old days when you could just add extra RAM yourself without having to pay for Apple's high RAM price.

    Had no hurry since the new Zelda has kept me busy :zelda_link:

    I'm not very keen into buying specially since Path of Exile 2 is being released this month :ablobcatbongo:

    I was looking for a 10th Fediverse instance to run, and I didn't have a Calckey instance yet.

    So now I installed https://calckey.world 😎

    Next steps: configure the thing and schedule backups.

    Who will be my first user?

    (So now I run 3 , 2 , a , a , a , a and a instance!)

    @losttourist
    From my investigation there's no clean way to standup another instance in the same domain and don't break the internet. I guess it could be fine if you don't care about keeping followers and such (which I wanted to keep).

    I'd love to read more if you end up going through with this.

    ricard,
    @ricard@ricard.social avatar

    @losttourist This same question is what I asked myself after installing Mastodon, running it for a couple of months and realizing I should have gone with for or a smaller backend. Mastodon is very nice but it's overkill for 1 user.

    stormy178, to random

    Given the direction I sense that Mastodon itself is going, I might just bight the bullet and initiate a clean slate protocol for my account here.
    Time to see if there's any good alternatives then.

    ricard,
    @ricard@ricard.social avatar

    @jay @stormy178 Oh wow, nice input. Then I'm somewhat relieved I accidentally installed Mastodon 😆

    ricard,
    @ricard@ricard.social avatar

    @jay I don't know I imagined it could be just like Mastodon for a single-user but with less resources.

    ricard,
    @ricard@ricard.social avatar

    @stormy178 Is the problem the software itself?

    I regret that back in October, I installed my single-user instance, I didn't do due diligence to investigate more. I would have probably set up an instance instead. Way easier and much less resource hungry for a single user.

    What are your pain points with Mastodon?

    jan, to random
    @jan@toot.io avatar

    If you run the latest main branch of Mastodon and you still see v4.1.2 in your footer you can add a suffix in the env.production file like:

    MASTODON_VERSION_SUFFIX=+main-6aeb162

    ricard,
    @ricard@ricard.social avatar

    @jan is the next release coming soon?

    @michael Ah, good point.

    The device needs to drop to around 1.500$ to make it remotely considerable for the rest of the mortals.

    In any case I want to see where this is headed and hopefully how they iterate the concept.

    I've just released v5.0.0 of FediFetcher

    This release brings no new features, but simplifies and unifies configuration of it: Instead of a large list of command line flags / environment variables, FediFetcher is now configured using a JSON file.

    You don't need to update to this version immediately, but if you are running FediFetcher as a GitHub Action, you'll need to update and create a JSON file with options eventually, as configuration through Environment variables will no longer be possible going forward.

    THIS IS A BREAKING CHANGE, so please read the release notes for detailed instructions, and let me know if you have any questions.

    When does the "Server Settings > Content cache retention period" clean job runs?

    Or how does it work? When are the posts cleaned?

    ricard,
    @ricard@ricard.social avatar

    @michael what would be the equivalent CLI command? I've read somewhere that "status remove" does more calculations than simply look at the timestamp 🧐

    I do have it running but wondered if that setting could be more aggressive. I'd like to reduce the database size. Currently at 2.64Gb just for myself.

    🎙️ New episode of Korean Tapas! 🇰🇷 🇪🇸

    Episode 30: Moving

    Turns out the Korean moving companies are top notch, you don't even need to pack your underwear. They'll do it for you.

    But would you let them pack everything for you? Like all-the-things?

    What options do I have on to have the advanced multi-column layout? As I do on desktop web?

    • has a max number of columns. It's good but I want more columns.
    • The official Mastodon app for Android doesn't even have custom columns 🤦‍♂️
    • The mobile view of the PWA doesn't show custom columns either :blobcat_sadlife:

    The only ugly workaround is to use "Desktop View" while on the PWA to get the desktop advanced view and pinch to zoom :blobcatnotlikethis:

    Quite disappointed with this new season that just aired.

    For me what made it great was the dystopian technology futures it presented. This is season is everything but that.

    Only the first episode follows what I expected and wanted to see. The rest were simply not but a different show entirely. I don't understand. Just name it something else. Why use the franchise like that.

    Your thoughts?

    ricard,
    @ricard@ricard.social avatar

    @ayo I would recommend you watching the first one, which has the most tech in it.

    The rest, no tech involved.
