I was going to post this as a response to someone else’s post, but realised it wasn’t really relevant to their point.

Years ago, when doing my teacher training, we had a guest speaker come & talk to us about our role as teacher when dealing with sexual diversity etc. He was a very conventional looking young white man.

It was a seminar type presentation, with discussion along the way. As time went on, he slowly removed his “straight” mask, to show how many students can & do present as heteronormative until if & when they’re ready to come out.

I wonder how this would work for autistic advocates who can mask effectively, in small group presentations? Masking as in making eye contact, smiling, a self effacing introduction etc. And then, “This is how I can present when I feel the need. This is how I present when I feel safe or give up caring.” Followed by an explanation of the impact that masking has, the fact that many autistic people can’t mask, the fact that we shouldn’t need to mask etc as well as general autism education.

Of course this shouldn’t be necessary & it wouldn’t be in an ideal world.
We could make comparisons with women who have to play by the men’s rules in business & politics, the people of colour &/or members of other different ethnic/religious groups who try to “assimilate” to get ahead, & how many struggle to do so, feel like traitors to themselves & their peers, get sick of &/or struggle with pretending to be someone other than they really are. Masking autism is not the same, & this would need to be explained, but I think many people would relate to some of the similarities & the feelings involved.

There will always be some people who refuse to learn, who insist on a negative approach as part of their strategy to prop up their own ego. And it’s not them whom I would bother trying to convince. It’s the more reasonable but ignorant people who are open to learning that I think would be worth targeting.

this sounds like a really cool idea. It would make a great seminar.

@actuallyautistic New years resolution:
there is so much creativity in our hyperconnected ways of perceiving reality. There is so much creativity in the was we set boundaries in order to live in this world. The process of learning this, makes us view the world from an angle, that would bring wonderful change, if we could share it with majority. I do realize the pain. Both from my own experience and from the vibration that surrounds me in our community. But it has nothing to do with being autistic. It has everything to do with being a minority. Being autistic in itself is a wonderful experience to me. I never wanted to be anything else. I just wanted the freedom to explore my own mind and to explore authentic ways of living. I think the only way forward for us is to be ever more autistic. As authentically as we can. There is so much more to discover. We have already established a new paradigm. But that's just a beginning.

Strategies for the free fediverses

https://privacy.thenexus.today/strategies-for-the-free-fediverses/

The fediverse is evolving into different regions

  • "Meta's fediverses", federating with Meta to allow communications, potentially using services from Meta such as automated moderation or ad targeting, and potentially harvesting data on Meta's behalf.

  • "free fediverses" that reject Meta – and surveillance capitalism more generally

The free fediverses have a lot of advantages over Meta and Meta's fediverses, some of which will be very hard to counter, and clearly have enough critical mass that they'll be just fine.

Here's a set of strategies for the free fediverses to provide a viable alternative to surveillance capitalism. They build on the strengths of today's fediverse at its best – including natural advantages the free fediverses have that Threads and Meta's fediverses will having a very hard time countering – but also are hopefully candid about weaknesses that need to be addressed. It's a long list, so I'll be spreading out over multiple posts; this post currently goes into detail on the first two.

  • Opposition to Meta and surveillance capitalism is an appealing position. Highlight it!

  • Focus on consent (including consent-based federation), privacy, and safety

  • Emphasize "networked communities"

  • Support concentric federations of instances and communities

  • Consider "transitively defederating" Meta's fediverses (as well as defederating Threads)

  • Consider working with people and instances in Meta's fediverses (and Bluesky, Dreamwidth, and other social networks) whose goals and values align with the free fediverses'

  • Build a sustainable ecosystem

  • Prepare for Meta's (and their allies') attempts to paint the free fediverses in a bad light

  • Reduce the dependency on Mastodon

  • Prioritize accessibility, which is a huge opportunity

  • Commit to anti-fascist, anti-racist, anti-colonial, and pro-LGBTQIA2S+ principles, policies, practices, and norms for the free fediverses

  • Organize!

@actuallyautistic A lot of people on here talk about meltdowns as a regular, visible thing. I know we're all different, but this is so far from my experience I started feeling a little impostery. I have had melts before, ie I've completely lost control and either: fled to save myself and others from me, or sort of left my body like a blackout (while still walking/talking) ... 1/

that's why I'm so pro self dx. The real diagnosis is the one that you do yourself, with the help of community, such as this one. Detailed, individualized full of epiphanies and it takes many years to get. The one from the doc is just a piece of paper in comparison. Like a passport. Does it say anything about who you are or what you need to be happy? of course not. It may wield some official powers. Maybe. Maybe not. It's a passport of a very small , poor , politically suspicious country...

I have this theorie that internalized meltdowns are more prominent in women cus we are trained to internalize so many things. And discouraged from lashing out. I don't have dramatic external meltdowns either. But I have them internally.

hey, what are you doing when you don't have too many spoons left or just want to relax and enjoy but also nurture yourself a bit?
one of my favourite passive enjoyments is watching watercolor videos. What relaxes me so deeply is the sensitivity. And of course the neurodivergence that shines through. I just love love love watching women being besides themselves about the subtle difference from one hue to the next. And nerding out about pigment properties. And of course the visuals. flowing colours. With my favourite channels they often have one video where they come out as being autistic/ADHD. With others I just strongly suspect it.

are we falling in to darkness? Just read the news. All of that disinformation. The snark and hate that peaceful young activists get. Or a woman having an abortion. The way police is turning into a gang of thugs. And a lot of this is being organized on social media. We really need to make sure to block Meta/Threads as effectively as possible. This is one little place to connect with people in and not be hit with it. It saves lives. It saves the lives of minorites.

I think a simple change in nomenclature could help Mastodon incredibly. Servers is an inaccurate term and instance is unfamiliar and vague. Both create tension for new users.
Why not simply call Mastodon instances what they are: Communities.
Ask users which Mastodon community they'd like to join. Have community rules, community policy, and community leaders. Not server rules, instance moderators and administrators.

Let me start. Everyone is welcome at our community, https://thecanadian.social

samid,
@samid@mastodon.de avatar

@mike if it were this simple. that would be so nice. you are proposing a change of culture. A positive one. I support that. So far its "whomever has their hands on the tech-part, decides." as a default. With great exceptions of course. Starting with the top. ( who calls himself a "dictator", and "beneficial", which is a contradiction in IMO. Keep going. But expect a learning process. About decision making, about different realities, about varying needs and so on. It's a wonderful journey though.
Tech is overwhelmingly white male. That makes for a very special perspective on that.🤔😆

everyone here agrees that hamas are a horrible terrorist org that holds gazans hostage and that they have responsibility in bringing this about. But they also are being used as an excuse to stage a genocide on a civilian population. While the right way to deal with them would be an under cover op to take out their leaders. Some of whom live a prominent luxury life in kathar. Instead of killing thousands of civilians. This war has been in the making for a long time.. Are you going to promote bombing russian cities cus of ukraine? shall we bomb us cities for (the list of crimes is too long here) Do you support human rights at all? Do you understand that they are for all humans? The hamas is a dictatorship, they only had 20% of support at the last count in gaza. which is as much as fascist opinions get in most western societies. Do we bomb them all?
Without the nakba, without netanjahu and his buddies purposefully sidelining the more moderate voices in order to create max confrontation and hinder the two state solution, destroying every opportunity for peace, they would never have rose to power. ( and why did the israeli right wing do that? Cus they want all the land, and this is their opportunity) Hamas recruit from traumatized families. Young men that watched their parents being killed.
I do not see where your disagreement with paulbiggar lies. honestly. there is none. The horror you feel, regarding the deeds of hamas is the same horror we all feel about the genocide in gaza. It's time we stop pitching those against each other. Don't try to invalidate other peoples humanity based on that.

samid,
@samid@mastodon.de avatar

@pauliehedron @paulbiggar
ohh yeah. that's exactly the same effect as what's going on in israel. The people who had made it their goal to get rid of fascist criminal netanjahu and boycotting the army are now back in line. You have to start seeing both as the same people. I know it's hard, if you have entrenched emotions. But they are. The same humans with the same emotions and the same psychology. And the same human rights. The violence promoting content that islamists are posting is the mirror image of the great job that israeli soldiers are doing at documenting their war crimes on instagram right now. Thank god a lot of jews are aware of that. Many of them are taking a very courageous stand to counteract that kind of ideology at the moment. War has that logic of uniting a people behind their patriarchal leaders. It takes some inner independence and some deep humanity to keep a clear mind if you belong to one of the parties involved. Don't lecture me on Hamas. I know all of this stuff. They have betrayed the people in the most artrocious and wreckless of ways. As any islamist force has done or will do. It is exactly zero rectification for purposefully killing 20.000 people mostly women and children. Again. I believe the concept of human rights is a bit foreign to you.
Israel has committed many killings of palestinians in the past. Before this shocking murder spree that started the war. Victims mostly not belonging to Hamas. Many human right violations.They have done their utmost to provoke this kind of reaction. Bombs are not the answer. You could just as well advocate for bombing Israel. The current leadership has made it perfectly clear that they are out to kill indiscriminately. And they do. And that's why genocide is the correct term for the reality that we are seeing. so . You get all worked up about the terrorism you see on one side, but you refuse to see the same thing ( on a much bigger scale)on the other side. And that gets in the way of you realizing about the monstrous violation of human rights. Have you maybe been affected by the "they are animals" propaganda of Israeli government? That's fascism. Believe me, 99% of the people advocating for ceasefire do know exactly what Hamas is. Universal human rights. Think about it. The only belief system that doesn't have blood on it's hands. Without it, there will never be peace in any part of this world.
If you don't want to accept them, just say it, cus my effort is wasted then.

samid,
@samid@mastodon.de avatar

@pauliehedron @paulbiggar
the Israeli could have kicked out the right wing and the settler violence any time. yet we don't bomb them. Stopped the artrocities committed towards Palestinians. Killings of ordinary people ( and rapes) far more numerous than what Hamas did on that horrible day. Yes. Netenjahu and Hamas play well together. It's obvious. Did you know that his government has been warned about the attack by egyptian services and it was so urgent that they phoned the ministry. The preparations have also been spotted by border military. Mossad has the ability to hear all gazan phone and internet communication. They had info. They decided not to act on it. Go figure. Both leaderships are betraying their people.
If you want to count killings and artrocities, you have as much ground to bomb Israel as you'd have to bomb gaza. In terms of numbers you'd actually have to bomb Israel first. They started the conflict and they killed so many more Palestinians. But that would be genocide, right?
Actually, you should start with bombing Europe, especially Germany. They are responsible for Jewish people having to flee their countries of origin. Well. Good luck with all this bombing. Wonder how many people will be left on earth once you finish. You and a few people you happen to like?
