Another thing we're not too honest about is the very expensive nature of decentralized. A FREE Facebook group can have millions of members. A mastodon server with 30,000 members can, depending on admin skills, cost from $500 to $2000 a month. And yes, donations cover that on some sites, but hardly all, and even supporting them can and often is a full time job. Big tech has us by the shorties in this respect. They have almost limitless capacity.

scott,
@scott@carfree.city avatar

@shoq @libationlegacy So if those numbers are right, users have to donate an average of between $0.02 and $0.07 per month? Or... even if only 2% of users donate at all, an average donation of $3.50 a month covers it? That sounds quite affordable to me.

Pixelfed does not display text-only posts in timelines, regardless of who we block, P92 posts won't be seen in Pixelfed feeds.

Furthermore, instead of an outright ban, pixelfed.social/art will silence P92, allowing users to opt to follow P92 accounts, or use a domain block to make that choice themselves.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

scott,
@scott@carfree.city avatar

@dansup would this address concerns about Facebook scraping/data harvesting of Pixelfed accounts, or do you have something else in mind for that?

Pro tip: when you see a sign post knocked down like this, often you can just pull it back up, and it’ll stay!

Same posts, now all upright

You can now follow BART, Caltrain, and Muni service alerts on the fediverse:

@bart
@caltrain
@muni

And there are more feeds for my non–Bay Area friends: https://transit.alerts.social/

Thank you @kona for making this!

If BigCorp meets with me under NDA and says "We are going to firebomb you all" then I can't say without personal legal repercussions "BigCorp is going to firebomb us". But I can say to everyone "Let's invest in some fire suppressant. If you think about it it's only a matter of time before we are firebombed."

The alternative is stay ignorant and then simply get firebombed

scott,
@scott@carfree.city avatar

@darius If BigCorp offers you a meeting, there has to be something they're getting out of it. And you can force them to drop the NDA if they want to get that.

scott,
@scott@carfree.city avatar

@darius For me, the normalization of meeting with BigCorp on its own terms, and the knowledge centralization (and power differential) that results from a select few participants having NDA'd info, goes against much of the point of the fediverse in the first place.

After speaking with my co-admin, I've signed the Anti-Meta Fedi Pact (https://fedipact.online). Car Free dot City will not federate with any instance operated by Meta/Facebook.

As the mods of tech.lgbt put it: "There is over a decade of precedent that Facebook will not have users' best interests as their guiding principle but rather profit margins, if it joins the Fediverse." (https://tech.lgbt/@mods/110567092695993475)

    @drahardja The email analogy is more apt than you may think. Email is in theory decentralized, but it's become essentially impossible to run one's own email server due to an oligopoly of big players like Google. https://cfenollosa.com/blog/after-self-hosting-my-email-for-twenty-three-years-i-have-thrown-in-the-towel-the-oligopoly-has-won.html

    One reason admins are signing the Anti-Meta Fedi Pact is they don't want to see the democratic nature of the fediverse be lost in the same way.

    i've met a lot of people who say they aren't having children for ecological reasons, yet i have never once heard someone cite climate change as a reason for activism in support of access to contraception and abortion. seems like a disconnect.

    if you not having kids is good for the environment, surely helping lots of people who didn't want kids anyway to not have kids is even better?

    With all that's going on, I missed that BART approved an 11% fare increase. https://sfstandard.com/transportation/bart-board-fare-parking-fee-hikes-fiscal-cliff/

    I hate that California politicians are so stingy about funding transit that BART's board had to do that. BART is already the most expensive system of its kind in the nation and its astronomical fares are a major reason why it's so uncompetitive with driving (other than for downtown-SF commutes).

    scott,
    @scott@carfree.city avatar

    This is the BART doom loop.

    1. No one wants to ride BART because fares are so expensive.
    2. BART's budget is F'd because ridership is down.
    3. Go to #1.
    scott,
    @scott@carfree.city avatar

    In my fantasy world where California Democrats actually believe their lip service to climate action and aren't useless, we would be discussing how the state can increase its support for BART to a level where BART can not only avoid major service cuts (which is all we're asking the governor for!!!), but also reduce its fares to not be the highest in the damn country, because come on!

    Electric bicycles (and trikes) are displacing more barrels of oil than all other electric vehicles, combined. https://about.bnef.com/electric-vehicle-outlook/

    And look how much less battery power they're consuming while doing it.

    Turns out lugging around a living room and two tons of metal every time you go anywhere is kind of inefficient! Electric or not.

    Import from Instagram, is rolling out later today!

    We needed another day to better test larger imports.

    ⚡ Admins can set max import limit

    ⚡ Imported posts retain original post date and position on your profile feed

    ⚡ Imported posts are not delivered to followers, but can be searched remotely and interacted with as usual

    ⚡ Imported posts will not appear on timeline feeds

    ⚡ Archived posts from IG can be imported as well, since we also support an Archive feature

    Can’t get over @inthehands ‘s list of what Minnesota’s state Dem trifecta accomplished this legislative session with a one vote majority. Mind blown alaskan right here 🤯

    @meredithw @universalhub in Boston? What’s happening with the T?

    We did this rally because state politicians are on the verge of letting California transit suffer severe cuts, as a result of decreased fares from professionals commuting downtown. The demand is for the state to provide bridge funds until we can campaign for and pass new regional funding measures in 1 or 3 years.

    Two of my favorite lesser known routes to parks:

    North Bernal Wiggle: while every other street turns into a vertical wall, this specific route gets you to Bernal Heights Park without steep grades and with very little traffic.

    McLaren Park: the best way to the Mansell promenade and Car-Free Shelley Drive. Start on soon to be Slow Street Cayuga, and take Theresa, London, and Brazil which becomes a car-free street at the top of the (moderate) hill.

    bike route into McLaren Park from the west starting at Cayuga and Theresa and heading east on Theresa, south on London, then east on Brazil, which enters the park and turns into the Mansell promenade.

    I hear it a lot: “How can we achieve fewer cars? Some people live in places where they will ALWAYS need a car to get around.”

    But:

    1. Most people live in cities and make many short trips.
    2. There are times of transition in our lives where more sustainable choices can be made.

    A thread.

    scott,
    @scott@carfree.city avatar

    @mbonsma This isn't surprising when you think about it. We all get directions and see how long the commute would be when deciding on a new home or job, or how long it'll take to go to a faraway store that has a sale versus shopping locally. We all weigh this into our decisions (not the sole factor, but doesn't have to be). Of course people adapt based on road capacity. (And transit speeds!)
