I haven’t loved the vegan sushi in the Bay Area, but I’ve learned that’s not because it’s vegan but because it’s not fancy enough :) (I’m very spoiled and I only like fancy sushi)

Check out this place in LA!

@fuzzychef Cha-ya is really enjoyable for me, but I’m far less particular than @skinnylatte.

The doom loop is reactionary policies

Defunding social services. Hiring more cops and jailing more people. Barricading sidewalks with "planters." It does not work to solve any of San Francisco's problems, it makes them worse and right-populists capitalize on our fear that results from that to do more of it.

Isn’t it just totally nuts that they rolled out the battle cops on a student movement whose literal slogan is ceasefire? like that means peace! weapons gonna protect weapons I guess

@seachanger This cartoon feels out of date now. How it began, though...

How parklet owners are interpreting “open 7am to 12am”… 🤔

The parklet is mostly locked but a small area is outside the fence

scott,
@scott@carfree.city avatar

@timrichards @meganL Yeah I mean, that space used to be a parking space, so it's one less car. In a way I agree that's beneficial for mode shift as far as it goes, but... walking down sidewalks where there's locked parklet after locked parklet after locked parklet, so that the sidewalk is walled in on both sides, is not pleasant, and I think part of why Valencia Street (where that is) has become less fun, honestly.

I think the cutthroat nature of the progressive-moderate divide in SF politics is largely personal. It's as much about trusting some people (hence giving them grace, assuming they can be pushed, are only taking bad stances to win someone else over but when elected will be good) and distrusting others (any dubious stance is even more proof they were always the worst), as it is about any concrete policy.

scott,
@scott@carfree.city avatar

My contribution to this is pragmatic cynicism. You all overestimate how much you can push your "own people" just because you campaigned for them/know their staff. Your candidate's bad stances are real, and won't vanish after the election. You can't whisper in power's ear and have it listen—win or lose.

Instead, make your community too organized to ignore, regardless of who the person in power is.

    A senior UN official says northern Gaza has crossed the line into "full-blown famine."

    This is what's so terrifying. It's already an atrocity and a tragedy that Israel has killed 30,000 civilians, destroyed all the universities and most of the housing, but they are not stopping there: millions are at risk. And if the world allows this to happen, there will be copycats; it won't just happen to Palestinians.

    Biden seems like the worst possible Democratic president for this moment.

    I have no illusions about the Obama administration respecting human rights around the globe, but he wouldn't still be doubling down at this point.

    Incredible example of lying with graphs from Caltrans. The bike lane pilot on the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge reduced collisions, but they made it look like collisions increased.

    Specifically, they divided collisions by vehicle miles traveled. But California's goal is to reduce vehicle miles traveled. So they took two good things achieved by the pilot, and made them cancel out to look like a bad thing.

    Screenshot of the Office of Governor Gavin Newsom's website listing things called for by a climate plan, including: Light-duty vehicle miles traveled (VMT) target of 25% per capita below 1990 levels by 2030

    If you see the Examiner story about Together SF supposedly pulling its measure to centralize power in the mayor's office because they're worried someone they don't like might become mayor and have reconsidered... Do not celebrate. They're lying. They have another measure that does the exact same thing that they're still collecting for. It just also eliminates commissions so they can call it commission reform. They're still trying to make the mayor a dictator.

    Thank you Supervisor @deanpreston for this statement

    "The crackdown on student protest that we have witnessed in recent weeks, however, is not about preventing anti-Semitism nor is it about protecting Jewish students – many of whom are themselves among the protesters. It is about an attack on basic principles of democracy, on the autonomy of universities, and on freedom of speech."

    Legalizing cannabis is great. How do we deal with the side effect of making the War on (other, still criminalized) Drugs look more defensible?

    The problem with the wasn't just that relatively harmless cannabis was included, but also the hard stuff must be addressed as a public health rather than criminal issue. That debate is being tragically lost right now in San Francisco, with record deaths as a result. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/joe-biden/biden-administration-plans-reclassify-marijuana-easing-restrictions-na-rcna149424
