Survey is up for redesign

https://www.sfmta.com/reports/west-portal-station-safety-and-community-space-improvements-proposed-design

I told them to include a cut-out for bikes to enter Lenox northbound, even if cars can't. It's the way to the rec center and school, and it's safer to design for this than the alternative (bikes going the wrong way/on sidewalk).

these days my timeline on bluesky is very anti-musk and anti-x whereas on here we're just talking about politics and bikes and our lives and it doesn't come up anymore. not sure if that's good or bad (we could be in denial about its continued influence)

Bookshop West Portal just sent out an email asking people to tell SFMTA not to make any changes to the streets at West Portal Station because it would ruin their business so I guess I’m never buying anything there ever again. I can’t believe 4 people JUST died there and they actually typed up an email that said this and hit “send”: “we believe limited SFMTA resources should be directed toward the already-identified high accident sites in the city. West Portal is not one of them.” They also take a potshot at the Valencia bike lane using disproven stats, and try to use the elderly and disabled as a cudgel against traffic safety improvements.

Also, they keep talking about the tragedy of a handful of parking spaces going away, when they’re along multiple transit lines. I have only ever arrived at their bookshop via transit. Do they actually have any stats showing that only people who drive buy books there? Or is it that entitled drivers are more likely to make conversation about parking (or lack thereof)?

would i rather they were making buses and trains and e-bikes?—obviously, but as long as there are cars, the people who make them damn well deserve a union. labor is entitled to all it creates

the tech industry wants to purge all human contact, which it calls “friction,” from everything we do. in this brave new world, we become atomized individuals who interact only with impersonal systems. seems like a bad way to survive on a warming planet

There's been a lot of negativity directed at bicyclists in our community lately, so I stepped out of my comfort-zone today and did the following things:

  1. handed out stickers to 20 random cyclists I met on Valencia St.
  2. briefly thanked each of them for being part of the community and had short conversations with a few.
  3. met owners of some of the newer shops on Valencia Street and asked their opinions.
  4. talked with UPS delivery drivers about how the protected mobility lanes affect them.

A view from a parklet along Valencia Street on a nice day. 5 cyclist pedal by in the protected mobility lane and 3 cars go bar in the car lane. In the foreground there are stickers that say "Protected Bike Lanes Save Lives" and "Open Valencia Street to the people, not cars". There are handwritten notes on the backs of the stickers.

What a waste of time and money. David Chiu should focus on San Francisco’s many actual problems instead of trying to beat up Oakland for giving its airport a geographically accurate name.

We have so many vacant storefronts in the Mission. So. Many. They will never all get filled. Conversions to residential, including shelters, would make so much sense here too.

scott,
@scott@carfree.city avatar

Speaking of retail, a smart zoning change would be: retail allowed on every corner lot, but also not mandatory on any midblock lot.

Corner stores would be cool sprinkled in wherever. Conversely, just because some planner thinks it'd be neat if 4th St in SoMa (say) were a bustling retail corridor, doesn't mean they can Plan that into existence. Stop trying to force it

ICYMI: This story and footage of a "sweep" is a difficult but important read. This is what Mayor London Breed likes to do to people with nowhere to go, while she cuts the City's affordable housing budget two years in a row.

The lesson from the center bikeway debacle: when you "compromise" in such a way that you lose the confidence of the people you're building FOR—cyclists, in this case—you fail.

While some of us now defend this bike lane as a partial improvement, no one loved it. It didn't boost bike riding, and made it hard for cyclists to pull over and stop at a business. So businesses got all the downsides and no upside. It didn't have to be this way.

I'm sick of justifying ethical behavior in terms of profit. We use phrases like "adding alt-text brings more customers to your site" or "protected bike lanes increase revenue for local businesses."

You should add alt-text descriptions to images because it helps people.

We need to build bike lanes because it makes cities safer and more accessible.

Reduce carbon emissions because it's the right thing to do! Discussing these things in purely economic terms misses the point.

now that @signalapp hides phone numbers, there seems to be no way to add a local alias for a contact to remind you who they are (in case, like many people, they set their name to just their first name, or an inscrutable string of emoji).
