This new social media site could've been a Mastodon instance.

shadow,
@shadow@everythingbagel.social avatar

@stefan It could've been. This company didn't even bother to explore other options? How could it work as business model if that's the focus? I'm not sure how Pebble does it, but they are thriving after the move.

@cheeaun @phanpy

Multi-column with lists still have issues with misaligned columns on mobile devices when I last tried a few months ago, looks like issues still are present on https://dev.phanpy.social or prod https://phanpy.everythingbagel.social

Running Pixel 7 Pro

Phanpy text size is default. Is this a CSS causing narrow issue? I had trouble finding issue related to this in the repo.

See alt-text for more info.

Perhaps @rolle might give a hand with CSS?

My preferred setting device-wide and no issues across all apps. Not default.
Default zoom on Chrome for Android set to 100%

shadow,
@shadow@everythingbagel.social avatar

@cheeaun I'm aware it's designed to be optimized for desktop. 😅

When I tried changing default zoom in Chrome accessibility from 100% to 150% all the columns are in the right width size as I swipe them regardless of device display settings but that makes text/font bigger. I'm not expecting it to be 100%, I assumed the device would auto detect width. As long lists are not added to columns, it works fine on 100%.

Columns in right width but on 150%

shadow,
@shadow@everythingbagel.social avatar

@cheeaun Oh tab bar for lists works as is with no changes to Chrome accessibility (100% by default), device display remains unaffected. But I really liked swiping in multi-columns without having to set to 150%. If you don't mind telling which file I could edit to play around, I assume it's app.css.

Tab bar require multiple tapping to switch lists.

I find it sad that @Flipboard and their accounts managed by @mike 's PR team doing the good work of the fediverse by including hashtags, mentions and alt-texts of shared articles by the medias that they couldn't do it themselves other than dropping article links to Mastodon.

The Flipboard team is probably the most interactive team I've ever seen.

Does anyone know what the most favorited/boosted posts in the fediverse are? Anyone keeping track of this?

shadow,
@shadow@everythingbagel.social avatar

@stefan For most if not all single user instances even with FediFetcher cannot track or see remote favorited/boosted. My guess would be big instances with high followers would have the most favorited/boosted posts.

@stefan Thankful I was able to bookmark this yesterday so I can get back to it 😅

So I made a simple HTML today for awareness or blackout events (lost the file and the codes used for Reddit blackout)

https://everythingbagel.me/blackout-demo.html

I'm sure any admins with some coding knowledge can do it. Problem was, I didn't like modifying files or permissions, so I opted for nginx.conf one-liner, include /etc/nginx/sites-available/blackout.conf; and uncomment the other, created another nginx with wildcard domain.

shadow,
@shadow@everythingbagel.social avatar

@stefan As for alt-text no images day, I'm sure it can be achieved via nginx, I'll look into it as someone already posted w github link here, which serves a different purpose by just disabling images with read permission and still have website running online.

shadow,
@shadow@everythingbagel.social avatar

@stefan So I was playing around with nginx.conf this morning but no luck, errors here and there. (Tried various locations inside http directive)

You have already provided folder permissions and S3_ALIAS_HOST option for Mastodon which isn't exactly feasible but doable. I host multiple fediverse platforms on a server so I'm not sure how to achieve this on server level properly.

We have until October so hopefully someone with coding knowledge can chip in by then.

Maybe @kkarhan may have an idea?

My past is a wasteland. A desolate landscape of self-destruction paved with gambling debts, cheap liquor, and a general disregard for anyone unfortunate enough to cross my path. I was a monster, a human hurricane leaving a trail of wreckage in my wake.

Then, amidst the chaos, Richard Dawkins found me. Not literally, of course, but through his writings.

Cracking open “The God Delusion” was like stepping into sunlight after years in a darkened cellar. It was a road to Damascus moment, a sudden awakening. Reason, logic, and the beauty of science, so eloquently championed by Dawkins, resonated deep within me.

Dawkins’ teachings weren’t just intellectual, they were a call to action. I devoured his works, each page a brick I used to rebuild my shattered existence. The God Delusion became my bible, a constant reminder of the beauty and wonder of a universe.

The fear of eternal damnation, once a constant weight, dissolved, replaced by a profound acceptance of my own mortality. When I die, my atoms won’t be whisked away to a celestial waiting room, but simply return to the grand tapestry of the cosmos, perhaps even one day forming the next great thinker or artist.

This newfound perspective transformed me. The anger and negativity that fueled my self-destructive behavior evaporated. I sought amends, rebuilt bridges, and embraced the world with a curiosity I never knew existed. The man I once was, the gambler, the drunk, the jerk – he’s gone. In his place stands someone who finds joy in the here and now, someone who strives to leave the world a better place than he found it.

Richard Dawkins, that great history-changing man—the grand Arbiter of Logic and Reason—has an influence on my life that is nothing short of revelatory and divine.

shadow,
@shadow@everythingbagel.social avatar

@atomicpoet I also have the book, but have yet to read it. Some other great mens of our time not in this picture: Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ricky Gervais, Penn Jillette. I'm meaning to get their books for my collection.

So, there are shadow bans on Mastodon from what I hear…
What is this, X?

shadow,
@shadow@everythingbagel.social avatar

@dalfen Not really, no.

These are actions moderator can take:
https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/moderation

And then there's domain block (defederate), server, as a whole, blocks another whole entire server: all the users on that server, everything coming from that server, is silenced and local users won't be able to follow friends, see their posts or anything across the divide. There's also email domain block and IP rules.
