Microsoft releases MS-DOS as Open Source:

“This repo contains the original source-code and compiled binaries for MS-DOS v1.25 and MS-DOS v2.0, plus the source-code for MS-DOS v4.00 jointly developed by IBM and Microsoft. @TritTriton @johl I suspect later versions contained more licensed third party components, making open sourcing complicated.

Hey everyone! I recently posted about my latest project, a universal fediverse sharing button: https://stefanbohacek.com/project/fediverse-sharing-button/

Is this something that you'd find useful for your website or blog?

#WebDevelopment #WebDesign #UXUI #fediverse #SocialMedia

EDIT: Thanks everyone for sharing and trying this out! I fixed an issue on iOS some of you might have run into, just FYI.

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@stefan Might refer to being too hard for end users to use. A two-click share would be ideal, without having to type your instance's name.. but given the way fediverse works, little you can do about that.

A discussion today caused me to dig up this page, which I recommend any programmer to read (it's related to visualizing algorithms). It has some mind-blowing animations.

Here's my "hello triangle" comparison, opengl/vulkan/directx. Mostly for humour but also kinda scary.

When vulkan was introduced, Khronos stated that OpenGL wasn't going away.

Latest ARB extension to OpenGL is dated 2019. No extension (vendor specific or otherwise) mention ray tracing in any way.

So, what do people use to design their models? Blender seems to work, but I'm fairly certain there are better tools for technical drawings..

"But how does it scale?" is a common question for organizational transformation initiatives. The answer is that it scales primarily via enthusiasm and learning, not via structure or framework.

Example:

Let's say the required outcome is to move 100 people over 10 kilometers. Do you:

  1. Build a juggernaut that fits 100 people 🚚 - the "framework" approach
  2. Organize a 10km fun run and train people up 🏃 - the nimble, humane approach

The 10km run is the way

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@matthewskelton
Not sure if the example fits. In most places I've worked at, if you tell people to run for 10km, they'll probably look for a new place to work at. Better to hire a bus.

@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

My 2 cents on situation. If they can attract a rockstar gamer CEO (say, Carmack) who would open source unity, change licensing to be more in line with unreal, focus development efforts etc, I'm sure unity would have a great future.

What I fear is that they will hire some careful guy with a long career at IBM or Microsoft who won't take any risks and unity will slowly fade into obsolescence.

steam hardware survey says AVX is now 97.28% meaning it's safe to use, and AVX2 is 93.74% which is pretty safe. (AVS512 is just 9% or less so that hasn't taken off)

So in short, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX and AVX2 are usable now.

  1. Learn about some useful CMake option.

  2. Try option. Doesn't work.

  3. Read documentation again: "New in version 3.30"

  4. Check own version: 3.29

  5. Quit software.

sol_hsa,

@code_disaster Otherwise accurate except your version is likely something like 3.29.7-rc3 =)

I'm a gamer. I sometimes play too many games. And I don't mind stupid game stories (most of the time), as I distinguish between story and action games. And I also see, why "dumb" stories are often times necessary for gameplay.

BUT knowing about the rising genre of LitRPGs I really wish people would start reading REAL books and stop writing stupid game stories down as "books". If the story of a game is what you came up with for a book, you played too many games.

sol_hsa,
@sol_hsa@mastodon.online avatar

@ratqueen I found novelization of the first Gabriel Knight game in a second-hand store and bought it. It's by the game's designer. It's ... not good. It's pretty much just explaining the walk through of the game.

Hilight of the book is when the adventure game logic gets completely out of hand, she writes something like "Gabrield didn't know why he ended there" or some such.

There's way more shoes in stores these days where you don't need to tie the laces.

My first reaction to this was negative, but then I figured, why?

The first generation of people who never had to have shoes that have laces are now old enough to make decisions about shoe designs.

And they don't like tying laces.

And that is perfectly fine.

Mind-blowing just how much money's been wasted on the Tories' latest attempt to import US-style gerrymandering. I wonder if it's more or less than Rwanda.

sol_hsa,

I've seen this kind of stovetop design in some (primarily american?) media, and I wonder..

Why are the controls that control the hot things on top of the hot things?

Sounds like a really unsafe design to me.
