Time for this week's and News video!

In this one, we have adding some data collection (but it's fine, IMO), we have a ton of stuff happening around AI, and it's still an absolute nightmare, we have the Linux Kernel 6.9 (nice), and banning in one of its territories, which alarmed a bunch of human rights / freedom associations:

@thelinuxEXP In defense of debian maintainer - i believe it's rational and good move (i mean default settings for keepassxc).

On my system, i have keepassxc (since i'm using this) compiled with no browser support, network support, autotype and other "crap" as he perfectly named.

"users" could learn how to compile packages with features they want.
This doesn't restricts any freedom, they just changed to better defaults.

If 'user' wants to take a risk, then that user should be on his own ... but seriously, that change was rational and good. If someone doesn't need security then... go ahead?

No one cares.

About tiktok, i don't use it and i do not provide data to China.

Ryzen 7 5700g ordered!

Finally, i can try PCI passthrough and spend more time in qemu.

Host system, can use just tty (or wayland only) on hardened gentoo.

vm, will be the actual system to use. This time, on FreeBSD vm i will have access to GPU (even playing with kali can be great now because hashcat needs gpu etc.)

Everything else can wait, but now i have isolation.

I'm in love.

Every vm will have one purpose, for example one can be for gaming only (and keepassxc will contain only passwords for gaming related accounts).

This can be uncomfortable to use, but i need practice.

@sourcerer@bsd.cafe avatar

I have two options now ...

  1. Order Ryzen 7 5700G

  2. keep money, and build pc with new GPU (powercolor red devil)

If i get more familiar in time with FreeBSD and bhyve etc then new PC will make sense.

Now for future i need to look for server parts/ready solutions.

Actually, i have no idea which hardware to buy for selfhosting stuff.

Every video on youtube is like "Hey! build a low power server!" ... half video later "there's a catch! You cannot buy this CPU" ๐Ÿ˜‚ Waste of time.

I need something that can draw very little at IDLE (c-states etc.).

Server purpose? i think local backup storage is good to start. Not sure if i'm able to build something in safe manner and expose to web.

Rant:

I love retro games, especially SNES/NES/N64 and GB games.
Modern games, except for some titles, do not fascinate me at all anymore.
This lead to being able to run machines that are in the "older" realm. Not having a dedicated graphics card can be a blessing for sure. Energy costs drastically go down and one can run quiet systems.
Besides, playing retro games is not taxing at all to the system - any system will do fine.
I miss the great stories older games told... nostalgia hits again.

sourcerer,
@sourcerer@bsd.cafe avatar

@jhx Dungeon keeper 2, Theme park world, Theme hospital, system shock, serious sam, thief, heroes 3, jazz jackrabbit 2... if we count 2002, also divine divinity, warcraft 3, neverwinter nights etc...

There's a lot of them, i don't remember every single one :)

sourcerer,
@sourcerer@bsd.cafe avatar

@jhx IDK, maybe right now we can say about 'retro' game from 2004 now.

Games like Sacred also feels old now.

I remember few titles from Amiga, but idk which one i liked the most. I don't remember childhood well.

What games You like from "retro"?

I want to play with "PCI Passthrough" / "GPU Passthrough" whatever.

I plan to buy Ryzen 7 5700G or something similar with integrated graphics card.

I wonder, can You use integrated graphics for baremetal OS, and for vm PCI passthrough, GPU (rx 580 8gb)?

Whenever i read about PCI passthrough everyone say "You need 2x GPU". I'm thinking about running OS on integrated card, and use GPU for vm.

This morning I received a call to have a job interview this evening, dev position, in a big enterprise ("big" according to my humble standards; ~200 people in the IT department I've been told, a noticeable change from being just 2 developers in my former job). Stakes are high and probabilities are low, but having another chance when everything seems to be going south is nice. :)

Backdoors that let cops decrypt messages violate human rights, EU court says

One of comments about the title:

"Contrary to what the headline says, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, is not an EU court. It is part of the Council of Europe, which is older than the EU and has more members, and is mainly concerned with human rights related issues.

The EU has its own Court, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Luxembourg.

Edit: just to add, the article gets all the nuances right and refers to the Council of Europe and even to possible endorsement by the CJEU, so the problem is only with the headline."

Steganography

On youtube i couldn't found much about steganography to make my homework.

Steganography is very interesting. It's great hobby for artists, and creative people.

Hidden information also played big role in the world and events.

@daviwil I like and use hyprland but i slowly thinking about replacements like dwl, and yambar instead of waybar.

I turn off animations anyway (never was good at this). I don't round borders so ...
all i need is speed, and functionality.

Hyprland is great to start if someone transition to wayland. Easy to setup and there's a lot of features.

Right now i'm busy painting everything in achromatic scale. And possibly i need better logo (in SVG this time).

I tried experimenting with gray colors in terminal but, it's not working so i use defaults from tty/vt.c

less is more.

@stefano Before uploading anything to cloud, we should also learn how to properly secure our files.

Microsoft "scans" password protected archives.
I don't think they should care what's inside ... or maybe they care?

If they can search for malware, why not search for something personal?
