Abolish capitalism, exhibit eleventy-million:

"Moderna is quadrupling the cost of covid vaccines, from $26/dose to $110-130. Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel calls the price hike "consistent with the value" of the mRNA vaccines. Moderna's manufacturing costs are $2.85/dose, for a 4,460% markup on every dose...

What will Moderna do with the billions it reaps through price-gouging? It won't be research. To date, the company has spent >20% of its covid windfall profits on stock buybacks and dividends, manipulating its stock price, with more to come...

It's not an outlier. Big Pharma is a machine for commercializing publicly funded research and then laundering the profits with financial engineering. The largest pharma companies each spend more on stock buybacks than research."

Have sent five e-mails this week now in a back and forth about items ordered and whether they are fit for dispatch.

Last week I sent six to follow up on payment being acknowledged, shipping and the delivery address.

I feel guilty for digging my heels in over details, for wanting to know the order status and that items will be shipped in good condition and as advertised.

But it's not wrong to want what you've paid for.

I've almost abandoned all hope of this order not just getting cancelled 🙃

@tokyo_0@mas.to avatar

Which reminds me, I think some reasons I've felt so defeated through my life with household tasks and administration is not recognising how long some things really take to make happen, and also not counting time I spend towards them (especially when tasks become more complex than expected).

tokyo_0,
@tokyo_0@mas.to avatar

Many household tasks take longer than you think.

If you don't count time you spend on them because you thought you'd only spent minutes when it was hours, or you didn't know how long it would take, or the process ballooned into five times as many steps as you'd thought would be involved, all you see is that they're still not done yet, and that your time has somehow vanished but you don't know where, and that your to-do list has nothing crossed off of it. It feels like the problem is you.

tokyo_0,
@tokyo_0@mas.to avatar

@ArtBear Right? I'm pretty sure a lot of people must experience this and just end up overwhelmed but never really understand why.

tokyo_0,
@tokyo_0@mas.to avatar

@ArtBear Yup, those unexpected sudden extra tasks are the worst for it, and especially when they have that complexity that isn't immediately obvious, as you say.

Hope everything can be repaired quickly and that it turns out to be less complex than it seems right now — it must be so disheartening to have to deal with damage like that.

When asked why he withdrew campaign support for Biden, Khan says it's simple: "ethnic cleansing is where I get off the bus, right?"

Everyone might know this, but you can set up wire transfers direct into a recipient's bank account (using the same details they'll give you if they ask you to do a conventional wire transfer) using . They'll guarantee the exchange rate for a couple of days while you pay the money in on your side (can be done after setting up the transfer) and even give you a nice tracking page you can share with your recipient. They send you the transaction reference afterwards, too. It's very smooth.

@kushal Presuming you must've seen this one 👉 https://www.w3schools.com/html/ ... it's a while since I looked at it, so it may have some CSS mentioned as you go along. Or do you mean specifically the accessibility part? (ie how to make the code most suited for screen readers etc)

@kushal I ended up writing a toot or two about my to-do list setup in Trello and remembered you'd been asking about tools, so figured it might be of interest: https://mas.to/

I wouldn't have thought of using Trello for to-dos to begin with but the automation lets you do some interesting things.

Noticed this a while back, but Twitter is basically trashed now for anyone who liked using it to watch and share media clips. Uploading a 2 minute clip in an HD resolution and bitrate takes about 15 minutes now. And they're immediately reencoded to a horribly low resolution, with the audio left out of sync. Guessing it's due to Musk trying to save pennies any way he can.

If I have to debunk the "There's no point -ing Meta because they'll just scrape what's public" argument one more time I might have to pull out my own eyes.

Beyond the technicalities, or law, there is value in challenging what is wrong even if assholes will still try to do it. There is value in people expressing concerns and working together as a group to address them. There is value in showing those who didn't speak up or act because they thought they'd be alone that they are not.

Is the problem exclusively capitalism, or the breathless obsession with "small government" and the insistence that regulation is "socialism" (when it isn't, and is actually necessary for capitalism to operate in a healthy way that benefits humanity)?

Oh, you know that nuclear power station they said wasn't affected by Monday's tsunami?

Actually it was. The water level in a seawater tank for Unit 2 was raised by 3 meters, for 15 minutes, about an hour and a half after the earthquake.

Once in a while I have about a software system that keep nagging at me, and over time it usually becomes clearer why something has been bothering me.

Tonight’s moment of clarity is that there is a fundamental problem with the , and it is that SERVERS CONTINUE TO OWN MY IDENTITY ON THE NETWORK. They may not be commercial servers, but they are still someone else’s computers over which I have little control.

Moving between servers is a high-friction activity: I lose all my posts and all my friends. Sure, I can reimport those lists in my new home, but my friends would have to rely on a forwarding note I left in my previous server to find me. I sure hope that old server won’t block my friends or go out of service, because then they’ll never find me.

tokyo_0,
@tokyo_0@mas.to avatar

@drahardja Have you looked at Hubzilla? It handles this very well, although since it's written to use a different protocol and only has ActivityPub as an add-on it doesn't always play so well with other ActivityPub-based Fediverse apps (like Mastodon)
