The amazing thing about Threads is that it 100% rewards rage bait.

@sil @Edent I've never heard of it. Obviously you can funds transfer which should be instant (but often isn't, because banks..) but QR codes is a new one. Not even monzo (they have a 'pay me' personalised web page that mostly works).

What he means is 'every bank I personally bank with lets me do this'.

@sil @Edent A quick google shows this is available for merchants and requires a specific app (although again I've never seen it). Not a consumer thing, and a bit wierd when tap to pay is so ubiquitous.

@evan We added one during lockdown because they were supposed to be 'better' than using toilet paper (and toilet paper was scarce due to panic buying).

Found that cold water squirted up your arse is horrifically unpleasant, doesn't clean anything, and you need toilet paper anyway to dry off.

During lunch a friend mentioned that you can just supply a HTTP URL to vim on the command line and it would use curl to download that resource and allow you to edit the content. I jokingly asked whether if you enter :w it would then issue a HTTP POST back to the origin which is of course ridiculous.

Alas full vim doesn't seem that common. No idea what arch uses (vi is linked to ed somehow) and Debian uses vim.tiny which doesn't have any of this.

Anyone here have a PC which has a virus scanner?

I'm trying to download an .exe to see if it will run on WINE. But Firefox is saying it has a virus.

Would one of you kind souls be happy to download a file and scan it to see if it is safe?

Popular tech YouTuber publishes a negative but fair review of a new device. Said review says product is an interesting idea, with thoughtful design and clever engineering behind it, but has a lot of shortcomings and teething troubles that—combined with the high price—don't justify buying it for most people as it adds little value over what their phone already does.

Cue the tech industry bleating about it being part of an awful defamatory hit job trying to hurt innovation etc.

10 years ago today!

Google Glass was probably the last time I felt genuinely excited about a piece of consumer tech.

It was obviously a flawed beta, but showed so much promise. The right amount of "this is so crazy it might just work!"

Wherever I went, people wanted to try it on to see for themselves how it worked. They wanted to discuss ethical issues and it's vast potential.

Today, it is barely more than a punchline like Google+.

But, for a brief moment, it was the future.

Tried dns64 for a day and.. off again. It broke my wife's OBS install. Apparently discord voice doesn't work either.

For it to fail requires that app writers ask for an ipv6 address from DNS then don't know how to handle it when they get it. It takes a rare combination of stupidity to do that.. but here we are, 13 years after it became available..

    @muvlon That's what the --system option is for, which you want to use anyway as it'll give it a uid in the lower range.
