I've been trying to more lately. I'm a slow reader so it's slow going, but I've been having fun and exploring both old and new, classics and award winners, authors I know and others I don't. As you might guess, it's a mixed bag, but mostly positive as I've been sticking mainly with highly recommended works. Given this is , I've decided to finally read . That's right, I've never read it all the way through. Maybe this time I'll finish it.

A major motivating factor for me to make a would be to have it look like the covers of vintage science fiction books. I want more of this and less of what we've had for the last 40+ years. And I'm not saying I don't love Star Wars and Star Trek and other sci-fi films, it's just that generally, sci-films could be so much more aesthetically wild and metaphysical and beautiful.

Here just four random vintage book cover, but there are thousands and thousands to pick from.

The cover of Roger Zelanzny's book, THIS IMMORTAL.
The cover of Brian Stableford's book, JOURNEY TO THE CENTER.
One of the many covers of Ursula LeGuin's novel, THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS.

Anyone on here ever see any performances? I became fascinated with them in the 1980s & wished I could have seen them, but they were not close by, so alas. I discovered them via a very cool video store called Great Society Video that catered to all things weird, strange, transgressive, & avant garde. At the time was putting out videos of their shows. I thought they looked awesome. I was also young. 😂

Most rules are geared towards -style productions — which makes a lot of sense. And most Hollywood films are between 90 and 120 minutes long, which is the same number for pages of a (one page = one minute). So, are told to write 90 to 120 pages. But I find myself often drawn to much longer films. Currently, I'm rewatching a four hour film for the third time. As one might expect, it's not a Hollywood .

This is a picture of Rovinj, Croatia. To me, this place looks amazing and I can imagine myself living here, especially if I also had a sailboat moored in the harbor.

I think, for most Americans, this city might actually look unappealing, too crowded, too cramped.

Thoughts?

I found this an informative and fascinating read.

I have not been a member of any party for more than 20 yrs. I find value in being, in fact, independent. But I've been considering for some time (and other parties of the ). Naturally, this article give me great pause. Assuming the facts presented are true (I have not done my homework), I wonder what it all means for the future of the DSA and its membership.

I welcome other's thoughts on this.

If you have never seen this 14 minute, silent by , I encourage you to do so. It's strange, hard to explain, , and beautiful in it's own way. It's considered one of the most important films in the history of and, especially, of . Some might think it's a little rough around the edges, and it is, but the carries it. Also, it's total budget was only $275. Amazing.

It's one of those dark, rainy, soggy pacific northwest saturday mornings and the quiches are in the oven, and I'm just waiting for folks to wake up, have coffee and/or mimosas, and hang out.

"It is so easy for those who have made their money under a given system to think that that system must be right and good. Conservatism is for that reason nothing else than a pseudo-philosophy for the prosperous."
— Fulton J. Sheen, Communism and the Conscience of the West, p. 81

I find such a quote fascinating coming from such a venerable conservative . But, perhaps, this former bishop of the , venerated by so many Catholics, was a bit more complex.

I take it for granted, but perhaps I shouldn't, that everyone knows The and are familiar with their music. I mean, who wouldn't know The Beatles... right? I have learned that's definitely not the case.

Everyone should (yes, this is a moral obligation) listen to the red and blue albums at least a few times in their life just to be in awe of the staggering breadth and creativity of those lads from Liverpool.

Maybe take it upon yourself to introduce The Beatles to some youngsters today.

“American patriots may have to resort to violence to save the country."

23% think this.

This is frightening but not at all surprising. And, though I do want to be careful with comparisons, I believe we can learn a lot from history, such as: If we want to understand Germany in the 1930s we need to understand Germany in the 1920s. The fault lines are deep and long and will not disappear even if some high-profile individuals go to prison. I fear it may get much worse.

Listening to the callers on C-SPAN in regards to the US House speaker vote today I can't help but think most US citizens (if we take these callers as being representative) are, for the most part, poorly formed and ill equipped to provide thoughtful opinions on US politics. It confirms my belief that this country could and somehow must have a much better democratic system and a better informed, more engaged, and more rational citizenry than it has currently.

Alas 🙄

There needs to be:

  1. more term limits on offices

  2. an easier way for the those represented to correct and remove/replace their representatives

  3. more direct control of representatives actions and decisions by their representatives

I pop briefly over to the birdsh*tsite and it's just hate, hate, hate. Even by people who it would be a stretch to call them hate mongers. There's just something about that site that attracts people who want to spend their time pointing fingers at others and saying how wrong they are. Five minutes or less and I'm asking why I had to look. I don't want to be a slave to schadenfreude dopamine hits.

To properly prepare us for another introspective , let us meditate on some cat names given to them lovingly, we assume, by their servants.

Foucault named his cat Insanity.
Derrida named his cat Logos.
Camus named his cat Cigarette.

The cat, Logos, with his servant, Jacques Derrida.
The cat, Cigarette, with his servant, Albert Camus.

I find it quite remarkable that a member of the House is vowing to oust the House Speaker (also Republican) for working with the to avoid a government shutdown.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all surprised given our political climate. None of this is surprising.

But is it too much to hope for a built around the idea of , which requires working with others & often seeking compromises...

But alas, some states have voted in deeply undemocratic types.

First time reading The Gospel of Thomas.

Jesus said to them, "When you make the two one, and when you make the inside like the outside and the outside like the inside, and the above like the below, and when you make the male and the female one and the same, so that the male not be male nor the female female; and when you fashion eyes in the place of an eye, and a hand in place of a hand, and a foot in place of a foot, and a likeness in place of a likeness; then will you enter the kingdom."
