An excerpt from an email I just sent: “By the way, Aristotle’s POETICS is absolutely NOT an easy read, so when you hear Crag Mazin [a pretty successful Hollywood writer] say that, just know he’s lying to you! … unless you are already an expert on Ancient Greek society, dithyrambic poetry, and music of the lyre. Then it’s a breeze.”

"At the end of the film, I had to smile, recognizing how Shyamalan has essentially ditched a payoff. He knows, as we all sense, that payoffs have grown boring. The mechanical resolution of a movie's problems is something we sit through at the end, but it's the setup and the buildup that keep our attention."

Maybe we were all sick of set up and payoff in 2002, but by 2022 we were desperate for screenwriting capable of doing it well.

Well done match cuts bring me great joy.

Match cut: in film, a cut from one shot to another in which the composition of the two shots are matched by the action or subject and subject matter.

By well done I mean at both a technical and conceptual level, in a way that serves the story.

I just watched a well executed opening scene in a pilot. That I have seen dozens of times before in dozens of other stories.

If I had given notes on the script, the note here would be: "What can you show us that we haven't seen a dozen times before?"

I love it when any filmmakers but especially indie or low-/no-budget filmmakers use sound creatively and with intention.

You can make an audience believe they have seen so much on screen if you just let them hear it. Their minds will fill in the rest.

In movies, people never give people the charger that comes with the burner phone:

bad guy: keep this with you, and when I call, you answer.

good guy: ok.

(time passes, phone runs out of charge, turns off, good guy can’t find a charger that fit that phone, hostage is toast)

This is a rewrite of an earlier thought I had 😝

Ah, the beauty of catching it after the email has gone out.

Did I just check the weather on Saturday in Tehran for a script I'm writing so I could have a character mention the nice weather? Yes.

Will anyone else ever check the weather to be sure it was, in fact, nice? No.

So will anyone else know whether I made up the good weather or not? No, but I'll know. I'll know.

(it was in the 60s [high teens in C])

Just submitted a sketch about President Cleveland coming out of retirement to be a running mate for 45. In doing research for it I have at least tripled my knowledge of Grover Cleveland 😝

Inspiration hit, and so I wrote a scene that I fear can never, ever been good enough, even upon rewriting.

Imposter syndrome? Maybe. Hope for it that is distorted by ambition for it to be great? Perhaps.

But...as disturbed by it as I may be, that scene has a rough draft now. And maybe, maybe... Billy Shakes Is Out for Royalties is that much more what it wants to be.

"Character always comes first for Frank, however. He avoids outlines, preferring to navigate his scripts without G.P.S. Ideally, his characters will become so fully realized that they’ll grab the wheel and steer the narrative in unexpected directions."

Question: I'm after examples of creative works where there is a realisation that the way you've been told the world works is suspicious or wrong and you need to critically consider things for yourself.

Eg: The Truman Show

Particularly interested in games. The Stanley Parable is the closest so far but keen to learn about or be reminded of more!

Thank you! :)

When I was 20 I thought by the time I hit mid-40s, I'd be a world famous writer and filmmaker, but well, here I am, only mildly successful but getting a lot of praise for each story from the very few who find them. Uhm.... So, I turn to teaching, and mentoring. This is one of the classes I give, and it's online so you can sign up, if you ever want to get into #screenwriting
