Beef was on the menu at this posh "pan-Asian fusion" restaurant (apparently popular with "influencer" types) in Abbey Road, St John's Wood in NW (near the famous zebra crossing)

A masked gang burst in, put all the windows through and set a petrol fire whilst customers fled for safety. London Fire Brigade deployed 6 pumps to put out the blaze, Metpol are viewing CCTV and searching for suspects..

[ordered some, will order more, want to always have the next book ready - thanks!]

Help.

I need #English books to read to my daughter (9).

She suggests Famous Five but I would like something with a bit more modern "mindset" than the girls always helping in the kitchen and the boys in the barn.

Ideas?

Also, thanks for boosts as my bubble is German speaking.

Also, wow! boost some of those good answers from the #Fediverse community... wow! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Why bother with a fresh bowl of water, when there's a skanky pond to drink from

vfrmedia,
@vfrmedia@social.tchncs.de avatar

@Coachmark @DoubleTreble

there's a reason for this; much potable water often contains a (small) proportion of chlorine bleach - which cats don't like, so they seek out other water sources (this will also vary from region to region and with each individual cat 😺 )

104: Jet Set Willy II (1985)

Unfair deaths, annoying tune, and dodgy value proposition aside (JSW2 is basically the original with more rooms), this platform game fascinated a younger me.

The oddball humour in the enemies and room names/designs combined with the sprawling map to create a game that felt like you could find anything, if only you could just make it through one more screen.

Play it on: ,

Both the Wales and West Utilities and the Council workers should go back to schoo/ysgol - first they should be made to sit in class with all the primary school kids for their spelling lessons; aftewards they can talk to the kids about how the road markings are made, and how mistakes are corrected 😁

@CaptainJanegay @Jaden2 @Tattooed_mummy @DoubleTreble

in my area (Suffolk, a provincial county some distance from London) and also in my former hometown of Reading in SE England there's a big rise in violence (mostly involving knives) amongst young people, and many involved are white and middle class. The authorities are trying to "do something" but are struggling (mostly because it costs money to set up youth services and those who vote for right wing parties don't want that to be done)

vfrmedia,
@vfrmedia@social.tchncs.de avatar

@Jaden2 @CaptainJanegay @Tattooed_mummy @DoubleTreble there are often more black and brown people in larger cities (such as London, Manchester etc) but even in the provinces there is very little segregation and everyone lives fairly peacefully in the same streets.

My friend is a presenter on a local radio station, which is run by a middle aged white guy and has a 60s to 00s playlist, but there is loads of soul/disco music on there because of our diverse population.. >>

vfrmedia,
@vfrmedia@social.tchncs.de avatar

@Jaden2 @CaptainJanegay @Tattooed_mummy @DoubleTreble my other friends are on the community radio station and there are literally shows for every ethnic group and Sunday has 5 shows with black presenters (playing different styles of music) and is really popular. If you go into my town there are people from every corner of the world, whist its not perfect its defnitely a multicultural society round here..

I was on my bike and when I saw this I had to pull over and get off to get a good picture.

Then it occurred to me, what if a normal person stopped and wondered why I was taking a picture of this random commercial message?

Wouldn’t be easy to explain why names with “gnu” in them provoke complicated reactions…

@timbray its not that strange for folk to stop and take pictures of an interesting/unusual looking car (a VW Golf doesn't seem to be that common in Canada and the ones which are on sale are often sports/performance models, I think that one may even be a GTE hybrid)

    @mookie I live in a small Northern European country, and have to park my car on the street outside. This is usually 30-50m away from my house, and can be as much as 100m if neighbours and their visitors have taken up the closer spaces. Which rules out charging from home and there are only a handful of street lamps and a low rated service cable for these (which the electricity distributor would have to upgrade, and neither the govt nor private enterprise is as yet prepared to pay for this!)

    vfrmedia,
    @vfrmedia@social.tchncs.de avatar

    @mookie already early adopters in my region (particularly Essex) are going back to petrol cars due to the unreliability of commercial chargers (and even at the petrol station you find many pumps out of action). Most EV drivers round here are Boomers/seniors who rarely travel more than 100km in one journey and have driveways/garages (so can charge at home), and previously owned a luxury diesel saloon (sedan) with automatic transmission...

    They took away the water coolers at work, which also means we can't fill the coffee pot. I get the impression they're not interested in keeping people around.

    vfrmedia,
    @vfrmedia@social.tchncs.de avatar

    @RL_Dane @lopta particularly if the water coolers are rented this suggests cashflow/profitability problems (although if there is no other source of potable water in the office this is surely a health and safety violation?)

    I had various part time jobs as a teen which didn't impact on my school performance, but I grew up in Britain where there are regulations against excessive child labour and they are enforced.

    Even so, my best paying Saturday job was selling cigarettes/tobacco from a supermarket kiosk (run by a Big Tobacco company!) as young as 17; it was only in the 2000s that the EU stopped teens being allowed to work in such places until 18..

    Petition for a “good cause” distributed through a Google Forms. Name and e-mail is mandatory in order to “submit your petition” but your address and your national identification number is optional.

    Who actually is behind this petition? Literally no clue at all. Not even a single e-mail address is provided in any description of said Google Forms page.

    People would simply give out their personal information, just because it's for a “good cause”.

    vfrmedia,

    @AkuAnakTimur in UK the Police and other authorities actively warn people against sharing this level of information on something like Google (there is already an official govt website for petitions, but they only ask for your postcode which is understandable as that identifies who your local MP is)
