trunksapp, to random

I want to know, what's your favorite thing about ?

xTeixeira,

@trunksapp Being able to open links to other instances in-app instead of having them open in a browser is so good.

XDA claim they're a "leading tech publication".

They published an article titled: "Why I like Linux on my Steam Deck but not my desktop"

-> Uses tiny and basically unsupported obscure Linux distribution to make a case against it on the desktop.

-> Also thinks somehow Proton is only on Steam Deck?

Please, if you're going to publish a Linux article, get your writers to do more than 1 minute research into it.

xTeixeira,

@gamingonlinux Yeah, I've never understood this. Most people took at least a few years of learning to be able to use Windows comfortably, but when they try Linux they not only expect to be able to learn it all in one day, they also expect it to be a drop-in replacement where everything is done in the same way as in Windows 😅

If someone more familiar with the space could help me out, ’s recent decision to fund a RHEL fork has me a bit confused.

I know Suse has their own distro, , and that there are comparative strengths and weaknesses between SLE and RHEL, but is RHEL so much of a standard in this space that Suse would rather spend money maintaining a RHEL fork than, for example, on community outreach to maybe make a downstream fork of SLE the new community standard? I don’t get it.

xTeixeira,

@spaceraser Having worked before at multiple companies that built stuff on top of RHEL/CentOS 7, I can tell you they really don't wanna put in the effort to migrate to anything else. If they could get security patches for RHEL 7 forever they wouldn't even upgrade RHEL 8.

With that in mind, they're MUCH more likely to migrate to something that is RHEL compatible, so SUSE is trying to bring in more customers by maintaining both SLE and a RHEL compatible offering.

😮 ESSA me surpreendeu.

luana, to xfce

Are there any pretty full-screen app launchers (Windows 8, Gnome or Launchpad style) for ?

xTeixeira,

@luana I don't think so. But you might be able to go the other way around and try to make GNOME more like XFCE and use its launcher. Also there might be an app launcher like that for KDE Plasma.

xTeixeira,

@gamingonlinux Isn't openbox unmaintained for a while now? A bit weird that Valve is giving support to this kind of stuff at this point 🤔

Can you imagine being able to boot up a Windows or MacOS distrobox? VMs would be a thing of the past. GPU pass-through, access to the host files?

IDK if it is technically possible, but if it is, that needs to happen. So much better than KVM.

xTeixeira,

@thelinuxcast Distrobox is nice for all these features but using it for packaging stuff, sometimes I need to start an actual VM anyway if I need to test something that requires an init system running in the guest OS (testing a systemd unit file for a package, for example). Is there any way to achieve the same with Distrobox?

openSUSE Tumbleweed!
Pacotes atualizados frequentemente e ótima infraestrutura de testes e QA.

Open Source community after Red Hat decides to go closed source 😂 By limiting the RHEL public sources to CentOS Stream, it will now be more difficult for community/off-shoot enterprise Linux distributions like Alma Linux, Rocky Linux, Oracle Linux, etc, to provide 1:1 binary compatible builds against given RHEL releases.

xTeixeira,

@chessert @mattb @nixCraft

The thing to note here is that the GPL license doesn't actually require you to make the code publicly available. It only requires you to provide the source code to whoever you're providing binaries to. Which is what Red Hat is doing from now on: Only providing the source to whoever has a license (free dev license or paid license) to use RHEL.

xTeixeira,

@mattb @chessert @nixCraft Yes, I understand. Personally I don't really like this recent move by Red Hat, but I'm very aware of all the work you guys do and all the projects you're involved in.
In fact I have personally used a lot of code made by Red Hat (including RHEL specs) as learning material throughout my career as a software dev, and nowadays I contribute to open source projects. So hopefully you see why I'm not a fan of the move, although I'm not trying to discredit all the work you do.

SUSE Linux Enterprise has it's sources publicly available at build.opensuse.org

You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features.

Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps.

:android: On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot

:apple_inc: On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona

xTeixeira,

@feditips Are there any Desktop frontends that let me see popular posts filtered by instance and by language / location?

xTeixeira,

@tcely Thank you!
