I'm finding now that we own an EV fewer occasions to say "Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car!"

@kentbrew i have none — but i haven’t been on a long trip yet?

@kentbrew you were pioneers!

it’s perfect for errands and now that it knows my driving style and terrain it estimates 216 to 270 miles on a 78% charge (I don’t charge to 100% generally)

As a rice eater, great rice dishes are totally what excite me. I want a ‘seasoned rice’ popup that just does 2-3 global ‘seasoned rice’ from around the world.

Jollof and nasi liwet.
Biryani and jambalaya.
Pilau and arroz rojo.

Contest cultures ("constantly prove you belong! Prove you're smart! Everything here is a dog eat dog competition!") tear people down under the guise of "toughness" and "identifying brilliance." In psych, we know this is destructive to long term sustainable work and mastery. We know it's systematically leveled at marginalized folks more.

These beliefs are at the heart of it all. This cannot be what we continue to let define who belongs in technical work and cultures.

Is there a general term for negative partisanship that applies beyond political parties? But not just the general term polarization. Like, people staking out more extreme or rigid positions on an issue because they're annoyed by what they perceive as the extreme or rigid positions on the other side?

xian,
@xian@xoxo.zone avatar

@kissane @misc i’d say that has other connotations but this sounds like “polarization”

Happy !

I'm still not up to Black History! I'm still working through white US history. Bear with me! Almost there!

Q: Why does it seem like everything has to be woke now? Even our scientists?! It never used to be that way! Why does it seem like these days, even higher education has to think about race, when it didn't before?

A: Higher education, including STEM, did think about race before. That history has just been hidden from you. Because racism.

@mekkaokereke I think there are very few out west and the only one I am aware of in California is Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in South Central L.A.

@stancarey A listener asked me if there are any calques in which native Irish speakers adapt English to Irish Gaelic speaking patterns (or any other kinds of Irish<>English calques), and I immediately thought of you! Do you know of anything like this?

xian,
@xian@xoxo.zone avatar

@grammargirl @stancarey Synge's plays have a lot of constructions such as "after having" to form the past tense that sound as if they are drawn from Irish Gaelic diction?

Airport pickups are such a show of love. Doesn’t matter if it is romantic or platonic. Anyone who picks you up from the airport that you aren’t paying to do so, actually loves you. ✈️

xian,
@xian@xoxo.zone avatar

@Skepticat My youngest brother was coming out on a business trip and I offered to pick him up at the airport and drive him to the city for his meetings and my partner asked why, since he could catch public transport and I said, "He's my brother!"

Seems completely sexist that there is a dress code for men and no details for women.

Also, why business attire? Why this fetish for the costumes of private enterprise management?

And who says ties are still “business attire” universally? This seems to be true mainly for bankers and perhaps other business clustered on the east coast.

You might as well mandate tuxedos or cutaways. https://apnews.com/article/senate-dress-code-resolution-schumer-fetterman-e29b6826ef611fb67206cc148b9ccc8e
