My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?

Unless the public puts literally billions of dollars into funding and expanding public libraries to catalog all this video media into numerous publicly owned gigantic server farms that maintain the capacity to upgrade digital storage indefinitely, all video media is doomed to stay with privately owned capitalistic multinational corporations that are influenced by foreign governments to censoring various things at will, and all video media is destined to die forgotten and overwritten by future shitty memes and useless influencer garbage.

Do I know anyone on here who has experience adapting a rotary phone to work over modern VOIP?

I know I will need both an adapter from rotary to touch tone and then a VOIP adapter, but there seems to be a variety of options and I can't tell what's good and what's lousy.

Oh it's complicated: first you would need to convert the analog rotary dialer signals into binary that will represent the individual numbers (either using a custom built Arduino board, raspberryPi or something else that has a low power CPU), then have whatever VOIP software running on a completely separate and dedicated (located in a closet, or server rack nearby the rotary phone) computer server that does nothing else but sit there and determine if the numbers dialed are linked to a contact, then you would need to convert the analog voice line coming from the hand-microphone into digital with appropriate compression parameters in a dedicated DAC (likely requiring its own low power CPU as well), the entire signal would need to be running on the correct VOIP protocols of a single provider otherwise you would need to build software that can predict from a decision tree what VOIP protocol was needed based off the number dialed (assuming they even have a number attributed, sometimes some VOIP services use emails or account names and not numbers), then finally after all of that you would need a dedicated admin or IT professional available to troubleshoot all inevitable technical issues that arise from service interruptions/software updates/hardware malfunctions/operating system configurations.

Apologies for the confusing language, I'm assuming you want them to seamlessly use that antique in the way that looked and felt as was originally used. That process (I edited my comment to hopefully make better sense just now) is the simplistic description of what needs to happen to make it work as if it were the original device. You can ignore the rotary dialer and but you would still need to use a computer to make calls.

i lean toward having trans people in the "mental disorder" category

i have a mental disorder myself but i'm not under the mistaken impression that this is healthy and normal, or that it should have its own flag.

by all means, go off and do your thing. but you're not a woman. sorry.

i'm not Brad Pitt or a pony that farts rainbows. that's life, you know?

You made a very good response to that bigot: stating facts with cited sources, no non-sequiturs, calm and respectful.

Apologies for calling you that, you are indeed not a bigot and I was wrong to say that.

The Verge is such a great website, and the design on their features (especially this one) blows me away. https://www.theverge.com/c/23972308/twitter-x-death-tweets-history-elon-musk

When I think "Genesis/Mega Drive twang" I think Fatal Rewind, a.k.a. The Killing Game Show. Maybe there's a better game that shows off that signature sound, but I'd struggle to name it. Any ideas? Maybe The Ooze?

“forcing OpenAI to identify its use of copyrighted data would expose the company to potential lawsuits. Generative AI systems are trained using large amounts of data scraped from the web, much of it copyright protected… [disclosing sources leaves us] open to legal challenges.”

Looking forward to new defences in court saying if they’re forced to explain exactly where they got this car boot stall full of nappies and DVDs from, they’ll be subject to “legal challenges”

There's nothing "open" about OpenAI. They are a for-profit, closed-source software using corporation trying to make a buck off the hard work of others for free. Fuck them and their neutered shitty LLM AI chat bot.

@moralcoffee Western movies only? Or are you also trying to diversify by watching subtitled foreign films that have similar themes to what you've mentioned?
