Fediverse

BeAware, (edited )

So, I'm curious about exactly how much of Fedi is blocking threads.

Boost for reach please. So the poll gets good info.

PS. This isn't a debate post or anything. Just want info if you're willing to share. Thanks!

ChildlessBambino,

@BeAware My instance mastodon.green is allowing Threads. I hate Zuck but i am not stupid. Most big accounts that find Mastodon too confusing will move there. So it is nice to be able to interact with them. I like that my server lets me still choose to do that.

@BeAware Are you meaning this to be a poll of individual account-level users, or instance-level admin? Or both?

We are in the process of developing a mobile application in 2024 🎉 :peertube:

Before starting the technical development, we felt it was important to understand the expectations of people who are watching videos.

We're looking for a few people to take part in a short 30 minutes video conference during the week of 15-19 January to find out more about your needs and opinions regarding the adaptation of PeerTube as a mobile application.

Send us a direct message if you're interested!

DavidGoldfield,

@peertube This is an excellent opportunity for the accessibility community to ensure that accessibility is baked into the design and development process. Not to mention the importance of alpha testing to ensure that the app is fully accessible prior to launch.

@peertube I'm in! If you can make an androidtv app as well that would be awesome!

There's a social reading platform called @bookwyrm which is an alternative to Amazon's Goodreads. BookWyrm is part of the Fediverse, and BookWyrm accounts can be followed from Mastodon etc. You can find out more at:

➡️ https://joinbookwyrm.com

They are currently trying to get BookWyrm translated into more languages, so that more readers can use it. If you speak a language other than English, you can help translate at:

➡️ https://translate.joinbookwyrm.com

@dalcacer @bookwyrm

There's a guide here for importing your reading data into BookWyrm from Goodreads, LibraryThing, Storygraph, OpenLibrary or Calibre:

https://fedi.tips/importing-your-data-into-bookwyrm-from-goodreads-librarything-storygraph-openlibrary-or-calibre/

"the main instance is under heavy load"

There are quite a lot of alternative instances nowadays! 👍

@feditips I like 😀

I'm on the Rambling Readers instance and am gradually adding my previously read books alongside my current reads. This is me

Advocates for #ActivityPub - IF YOU HAVE A #WORDPRESS SITE, have you installed the ActivityPub plugin? https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub/

At the State of the Word address this week, Matt Mullenweg was asked about support for the plugin, and he commented that less than 5,000 sites had installed it. So he wasn't sure how interested people are in it.

So... if you have a WP site, let's start installing that plugin and making more sites available via ActivityPub! 😀

@eff Do not underestimate this CSAM matter. As the recent attention from Facebook/Threads illustrates, big tech is starting to wake up to the danger the Fediverse represents to their regime of surveillance capitalism. The ostensible justification for attacking the Fediverse in the name of "rooting out child pornography" is a threat we need to take seriously.

Here is my article about , the , and federalism for The Atlantic. I did NOT write the headline, which suggests the article is about Ben Franklin (never mentioned in the article) and Bluesky (mentioned a couple of times). LOL but I'm still really excited for you to read this!!! https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/05/social-media-centralism-fediverse/674041/

@annaleen very nice, but definitely needs more analysis of whether BlueSky will be subject to @doctorow 's curve or if whatever decentralization mechanisms it has can prevent that. thanks for sharing!

You know where you don’t have to worry about such things? Host your videos on a #PeerTube instance and use #Owncast for your live video streaming needs.

Looks like Tumblr is having issues and Fedi is getting another wave of new folks.

Welcome to the Fediverse, new folks!

A couple tips:

Boost freely

Try to put up for yourself an introduction post with the hashtag or or both listing stuff you're interested in

Use hashtags freely, they help folks find you and what you're posting!

Use Alt-Text in your pictures. It helps a lot!

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@mdmrn

Also, in between finding folks to follow, you can follow hashtags, too! It's the greatest thing!

renwillis,
@renwillis@mstdn.social avatar

@mdmrn @jcrabapple I always recommend "follow and favorite liberally!" Build up that feed and don't be afraid to dive down rabbit holes from boosts. Lots of great people to find here!

🆕 blog! “ActivityPub Server in a Single PHP File”

Any computer program can be designed to run from a single file if you architect it wrong enough! I wanted to create the simplest possible Fediverse server which can be used as an educational tool to show how ActivityPub / Mastodon works. The design goals were: Upload a single PHP file to the server. No […]

@Edent nice, I was thinking of writing a simple server for a single account that would use an xml file as a source. Pretty sure this has already been done anyway.

OK! My tiny #ActivityPub server can now follow users from other instances!

Still under 40KB of adequately documented PHP.

@Paradox

PeerTube is not a single website, but a federation of several videoplatforms.

There are videos in many langages, we host a search engine here : https://sepiasearch.org/

We are currently working on improving the search and recommandations engine to better support langages.

Before translating videos, we need speech-to-text transcription. We are in contact with contributors who want to bring such a feature to PeerTube so... finger crossed !

@cliffwade their Circles idea was pretty cool. Unfortunately the discourse never seemed to stray too far from talking about the platform itself, and then they soured a lot of people to it by attaching it to YouTube and other Google services.

denix,
@denix@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@xahteiwi @cliffwade same here - it was the best social network I've ever used, although I'm not at all "social".

I had all the right people in my circles on G+ and enjoyed discussing all the relevant topics with them.

FB-peeps always complained G+ was a "ghost-town", that's because it was very focused "no bullshit" and I preferred it that way. And because of that, I was willing to forgive Google all those little missteps, which were not critical.

WTF?

Oh, I just said “Hello” to you in italics.

(That’s similar to what someone who uses a screen reader hears when you use fancy non-alphabetical Unicode characters to simulate italics or boldface on your fediverse posts. So please don’t do that.)
