"Healthy soils... could hold up to eight times more water than more depleted soils. And one of the ways to build #healthysoil structure was to let natural matter such as #leaves decompose into it and release #nutrients. Stripping away all the waste from a #garden, then buying #compost to #fertilise it, was counter intuitive."

To us, the best mulch that you can use for the garden beds does not come from the garden center.

It is whatever biomass you have next to you that can be used and that is free.

This year I have used leaves from our trees in the garden beds and chopped weeds into the aisles.

Yes, it is labor-intensive to do that but I know that every year I have this resource available for free. So instead of sending this yard waste to the landfill and creating greenhouse gasses, it is best to find ways to use it in the garden.

What mulch do you like to use for your garden?

Annekin,
@Annekin@mstdn.social avatar

@compost I recently started chopping up prunings & using them for mulch. I also make sure I don't tidy up much over winter. So leaves/twigs etc stay on the earth where they fall.

Nature is ridiculous! This transformation of the strawberry runners I ordered happened within ONE WEEK. They arrived after being in the mail for 6 days. I just stuck the roots in water for a couple hours, planted them, and voila. Thriving. This will never stop blowing my mind.

@emptywheel To me it feels like living in an echo chamber. One person mentions Biden's age. The press pick up on it & express an "opinion." The R's & D's start talking about it because the press have mentioned it. Then the media start talking about why everyone is talking about Biden's age. A narrative they started & everyone fell for. It's exhausting.

@anathema_device I don't really know much about George Galloway. It does seem the only person he is serving is himself, & there is no evidence (according to most "pundits" I respect) that he intends to help the constitutents of Rochdale. I do wish those shouting the loudest about Gaza were actually genuinely motivated to stop the bloodshed, rather than using it to their political (& self serving) advantage. These are human beings we are talking about. Not chess pieces to be moved around at whim.
