Moved the hacked PS1 mini (it has like 80+ games on it now thanks to Autobleem, the most important of them being Diablo) to the living room to start up a new Diablo run. I beat it two years ago in September and I started my run(s) in August 2021. Something about August and fall, I guess. Last time, I tried a sorcerer but struggled til I switched to fighter, which I beat it with. This time, I'm trying a rogue. Never tried rogue before. Should be wild. Time for tons of saving and leaving all my gear on the ground in town! 🤣

Here it is, my top 20 albums of 2023. It's not ALL metal, although there's a lot of metal. I know not everyone likes metal (or brutal death metal) - but there's some rap, some punk, a little post punk- actually, my top 3 here are all non-metal.

As always, let me know your thoughts, especially if you check some of them out, or already have.

"Top 75 Albums of 2023" lists from music magazines like MOJO. Sigh. It's just 99% SO not my bag. And there's even some underground/indie stuff on it (but literally the ONLY album here it that's on MY 2023 best albums list would be Billy Woods, I'm honestly dismayed they neglected the Hives). 😂

Just the fact they put Public Image Ltd on it, and John Lydon is such a racist asshole- that should really discredit any kind of legitimate opinion they are trying to present here.

Check it out, and be disappointed with me: https://www.brooklynvegan.com/mojos-top-75-albums-of-2023

It's after 10pm here on a Saturday night, and my music-finding post is finally done and posted! ⚡

I know we all find music in different ways, and I wanted to write a bit on it. These are my methods and tools. Comment away on your own methods and tools-- I'd love to see everyone else's process, too!

Thanks to everyone who inspired this post, including in HUGE part @buffyleigh @starshaped and @Defiance.

Also tagging @HailsandAles @bendaubney @hl @skullvalanche @wendigo @DanielTuttle @BlueGambit86 @cory and I hope that anyone else that reads it and likes it gives me a shout.

Thanks to @causalityloop, I now have this excellent guide (maybe the best I've ever seen) to many metal bands and their respective types/categories (all up for interpretation/debate, of course, there might be a few missing or ones that cross over!)

I personally love so many types of #metal. #DeathMetal, #BlackMetal, #SludgeMetal, #Grindcore, etc.

This one's gonna be a little long.

Before I talk about my odd little niche WordPress projects, what are some of your blogs or personal projects, WordPress or otherwise? If you comment and link to them here, I'll definitely check them out! I like to see people's projects, what they've made and what they continue to work on. The fediverse has been really cool for seeing a lot of that. I'm also interested in how long we're able to keep passion projects going amidst the crazy chaos of life. It can be tough! But writing and making things is always super rewarding, as well-- at least it has been for me.

I think I've always liked writing, I like music and that's basically mostly or all writing. At least it is for the lyrics of the vaguely rock type stuff I usually end up making. I write a lot of lyrics, short little bits, phrases. But for longer pieces, I've always liked the ease of writing and reading blogs and digital journals. I'm not one for writing in physical journals. I do like reading physical books, but for writing, but I prefer to type.

Over the years, I've had the chance to experiment with different forms and styles of blogs, just as I've liked to do when designing websites. That was the initial appeal of microblogs like Twitter, things like Livejournal before it, and the huge appeal of WordPress, which of course you can use for short OR long form writing.

I first started playing around with WordPress back around 2008. It was different back then! If you had a free plan, you could change the name of your blog to whatever you wanted as much as you wanted (something they don't allow anymore but was super useful if you needed to rebrand) etc, and all kinds of other differences (no block editor back then, either, obviously!)

I do still have a blog running from back then. It's called space. time. tech. (https://spacetimetech.wordpress.com). The topics I wrote about on the blog are probably obvious from its title. I've been (pretty infrequently) updating that one for 15 years this year. Wow.

The second oldest blog I still run I've mentioned here before. It's called Animated TV Blog (https://animatedtvblog.wordpress.com), and again, as its name fairly obviously suggests, I write about my favorite cartoons. I started Animated TV Blog in 2010 and it's been a blast, even just doing the infrequent updates. And I've been doing it for 13 years this year- another really long-running blog I've been able to maintain somehow (you gotta love the content!) I had a pretty active linked Twitter account too that I ran alongside ATB (back when Twitter was just microblogging, and not a fascist wasteland) for many years. Again, I believe the key to good blog writing is picking a topic or topics that you really love-- something you're really passionate about (not just a fad or a passing interest). That way, you'll be more likely to continue to want to write on the blog. At least it worked for me, in the case of ATB!

My most recently created WordPress blog isn't updated anymore, but the posts are all still up and viewable. It was called Tech User Today (https://techusertoday.wordpress.com) and it was an experiment to try and make something a little more professional, to try and monetize with affiliate links (there's a lot of competition out there). I ended up taking on a bunch of outside reviews, and it was pretty cool, but it also quickly became overwhelming and not enjoyable. I started that one in 2018 and I stopped writing posts for it around two years later, in 2020.

One last thing I've learned from writing WordPress blogs, always make sure to update and maintain your themes! Older default themes tend to start to look outdated or crappy. Just like any good website, it's best to just make sure you like the look of what you're making, and to remember you can always switch up the look of it- I've definitely done this several times over the last 15 years.

If you read all this, you're awesome. And make sure to comment with your own projects!

I'm kinda obsessed with Rogue and roguelike games in general (and weird monsters). I was reading this great article from 2016 about their history that I boosted yesterday (thanks to @WoodooProd for alerting me to it).

As I read and poked around the web to check out these early roguelikes, I loved these two screens from a SUPER early roguelike (Pedit5, from 1975).

Monsters loading! 🤣

Officially ditched VS Code for Brackets (https://brackets.io). I like it a ton better and it's not Microsoft. Win win.

Switched to LibreOffice (https://libreoffice.org) too. Uninstalled Windows Office since they want to charge monthly for Excel and Word (seriously).

I'm sick of corporations and their crap. More open source, less of everything else.

@jake4480@c.im avatar

I've loved Futurama for so long- I was actually watching on March 28th, 1999 when the pilot episode aired on FOX after the Simpsons, and I've loved it ever since. And Hulu just revived it for a couple more seasons!

I've run a blog on cartoons (https://animatedtvblog.wordpress.com) for 14 years this year, but I realized I've never written up anything on my favorite Futurama episodes, despite loving the show so much, or even had a standalone Futurama-only post on there! I figured I'd change that this year.

I've been rewatching my favorite episodes this week and simultaneously working on a 'top 10 Futurama episodes' post. My top 5 were easy enough to figure out, and then I narrowed a list of 10 more episodes down to just 5 more. Wasn't too tough. Now, to do little write-ups on each, why I love them so much, why they're so rewatchable, etc.

I love the Sim City games (ever since I played the original in school in the early 90s!) I recently grabbed Cities: Skylines on Switch when it was on sale for less than $10 and I haven't dived in yet, but I'm psyched to eventually.

But this time, instead of just jumping in and building whatever (as I often do, recently with both the Sim City mobile game and the Sim City on DS), I'm doing some research on city design, to try and build something in a meaningful way. I want to see what designs I really like most, etc. From what I hear about Skylines, it's super realistic, and I should be able to build a cool, futuristic city that's fully green, sustainable, etc.

Anybody else played Skylines or is a big fan of any of the other Sim City games?

Soundgarden's 'Superunknown' still sounds just as amazing as it did when I bought the CD from Circuit City in 1994 when I was 14. Easily one of the greatest albums of all time. That day, I bought my first 3 CDs ever -- the others being Jar of Flies and Versus. What a YEAR for music 1994 was.

Hive-minding this one. My taxes are basically the most simple they could be and little has changed since last year (similar amount, same work, same method of filing, no dependents or ANYTHING like that). I can't remember if I've gotten one of these letters before, I feel like maybe I have? Anyone else ever get one? Does it delay your refund massively?

Anyone have something you tried to post not show up for you, but it clearly posted and shows up for other people? It had no hashtags, wouldn't be muted - I had figured my instance blocked or rejected it because it was about Russia. I even tried posting it again, and I couldn't see either one. But now I know they actually DID post, only since someone replied to one. WEIRD.

I was going to wait until next Wednesday for Music Women Wednesday for this one, but I need to talk about this album right now.

'Precious Dream' by Hot Garbage came out today and I just finished listening to it. It's perfect. More than likely will make my top 20 this year unless 20 other amazing albums somehow surpass it. I doubt they will. Both Juliana and Alex Carlevaris sing, they're siblings. It's like psych, garage, post punk, shoegaze? But there's also some wild bluesy and dark country-ish vibes. It's amazing fuckin SONGWRITING is what it is. This is Hot Garbage's second album, now I gotta check out their first.

I hadn't heard of cranes til I stumbled across them on Bandcamp the other day. Their new stuff is too light/airy for my tastes, but these Peel Sessions from 1989-1990 that release in a few days-- the two songs up so far.. wow. I LOVE her voice.. the great kinda minimal music behind it, reminds me of Björk a little sometimes, but maybe with SLIGHTLY more edge and more 80s-ish guitar. Check it out, let me know what you think.
