I’m seeking an expert in geomancy, ley lines, and occult practices involving the land to speak at an online event on 15 June. Anyone you’d suggest? Can be skeptic or believer, as long as they can explain the concept! It’s a paid gig, and the audience is mainly writers.
It's for my next Writing the Occult, which is about connections to the land - so if you have other suggestions that fit that theme, I’d also love to hear them.

I struggle back and forth about whether I want to continue using #occult and 'magical' models for the #paranormal phenomena I experience and discuss.
One of the warning signs that keeps flashing at me is that all the occultists I have met and interacted with are mentally ill and getting worse. For some reason, at this time this year, many of them are starting to spiral.
At The Crossroads: A Personal Journey Beyond Occult Paradigms
@codewyrm Insightful and thought-provoking blog post! I guess my stance toward the paranormal is that it is a crack in reality, or at least in consensus reality, that tells us something about the true nature of the universe. Jeffrey Kripal has a line about the #paranormal being the sacred in transit to the scientific (though I haven't got that quite right). I personally don't find that the #occult and magical traditions (which I respect in themselves) are much help in understanding these things.
Explore the darker side of the Ferguson Collection
With Hallowe’en just behind us, in the first of a series of spooky-themed blog posts by the University of Glasgow Archives & Special Collections, we delve into 19th century literature on the occult. In this article we look at Sir Walter Scott’s (famed writer of Ivanhoe) conception of the supernatural, before moving on to explore the significance of a rare anthology of ghost stories https://www.exploreyourarchive.org/the-darker-side-of-the-ferguson-collection-part-1/
I’ve said this before, but we’re living in a conceptual golden age in music. One of my favourite bands of the moment is @greenlungband, and this is the package you get with their new album, ‘This Heathen Land: A Journey into Occult Albion’. A map, a workbook full of scribbles, a cover that pays tribute to mid-20th century books out on Penguin and its imprints, and a whole concept introduced in the first seconds…
… which comes in as the needle hits, with a crackly, old 1950s-BBC-documentary-style voiceover: “Beyond the cities and motorways of modern Britain, away from the influence of its Christian churches and cathedrals, lies another country. An older, stranger country. A country of lonely tors and desolate moors, of forgotten woods and mysterious standing stones. You are about to embark on a journey into occult Albion. Come. It’s time to explore this heathen land…” That’s fascinating, but…
… just as enthralling - and right now, culturally interesting - is how bands themselves are creating these worlds as part of building their own microcultures and accompanying design cottage industries. Bands like Green Lung, Goat, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and more are creating their own aesthetics, backstories, concepts - as a way to build fandom that enters that world on its own terms, and stays with them, and screw airplay. It’s a brilliant & pretty significant development…
This article explores the medieval Catholic Order of the Swan in Germany - its founding, Marian devotion, symbolism, decline, revival, legacy, and influence on Germanic identity and spirituality.
Some occult texts are riddled with misinformation and misdirection purposefully and knowingly included by the author. Sometimes called "blinds," their purpose is to obfuscate the secrets contained within the text, and to prevent or sabotage the work of the uninitiated who attempt to use the text without the proper knowledge, training, or experience.
@khthoniaa Yeah, I think so. They spell out several moral phrases, and it made me see that a lot of the images are a commentary on morality, which made me interpret them differently.
@khthoniaa This isn't just something that is limited to occult knowledge; trying to figure out what old craftsfolk were doing in their metalworking is often an exercise in critical thinking.
And to this day, nobody has any real idea what the recipe for Greek Fire was.
Craft secrecy was definitely a feature of a large number of crafts in a large number of places and times throughout history. It's a very different attitude than that of post-enlightenment academia and the modern internet world.
Day 3: Hand of Glory from Folktober
Sounds like a lot of effort to make one of these, I don't think I could be bothered.
Also I’ve seen these candles from a few spooky retailers and even though I love them I’m not sure I could have one in my house 😅
