#EU#Spain#Catalonia#Cybersecurity#Privacy#Encryption#Wire#Proton: "As part of an investigation into people involved in the pro-independence movement in Catalonia, the Spanish police obtained information from the encrypted services Wire and Proton, which helped the authorities identify a pseudonymous activist, according to court documents obtained by TechCrunch.
Earlier this year, the Spanish police Guardia Civil sent legal requests through Swiss police to Wire and Proton, which are both based in Switzerland. The Guardia Civil requested any identifying information related to accounts on the two companies’ respective platforms. Wire responded providing the email address used to register the Wire account, which was a Protonmail address. Proton responded providing the recovery email for that Protonmail account, which was an iCloud email address, according to the documents.
In the request, which listed “organised crime” and “terrorism” as the nature of the investigation, Spanish police wrote that it wanted to “find out who were the perpetrators of the facts taking place in the street riots in Catalonia in 2019.”"

It’s winter in #Catalonia. These droughts are very bad.
While #climate change is the main culprit, the BBC can’t resist inserting the odd line to give doubt or ‘balance’. Surely, surely it’s too late in the day for this:
‘Ms Barnadas said it was too soon to be able to know whether the drought could be attributed to climate change’
‘Climate change does not cause all droughts’
How close are we to having climate #refugees from Europe?
#Spain’s Catalonia Is Spending $2.6 Billion to Survive Without Rain
#Catalonia, home to Barcelona, is building desalination plants. #Andalusia in the south is reducing water pressure "in an attempt to reduce consumption by 20%. If no rain falls next spring, it will require tanker ships to deliver water over the summer."

Today in Labor History October 13, 1909: Francisco Ferrer, founder of the Modern School movement, was executed in Spain by the Catholic Monarchists. Ferrer was an anarchist educator who opposed the Church’s monopoly over education in Spain and created that state’s first secular, co-educational schools that taught poor and affluent children side by side. On July 28, martial law was declared throughout Spain, accompanied by brutal military repression. This was in response to a series of violent confrontations between the Spanish army and anarchists, freemasons, socialists and republicans in Catalonia, caused by a draft of workers to be sent as colonial enforcers in Spanish-occupied Morocco. During a kangaroo court, Ferrer was convicted of fomenting the insurrection and was executed by firing squad on October 13, 1909. His execution led to worldwide condemnation and protests. George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as anarchists and radicals like Peter Kropotkin and Emma Goldman protested the execution.
Right-wing officials joined a mass rally in Barcelona on Sunday to protest plans to grant jailed Catalan separatists an amnesty.
It's being considered by acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to get their political support for a new left-wing government that would be headed by him.

Today in Labor History October 6, 1934: The Catalan republic was declared following the workers' uprising in Asturias, and other worker uprisings taking place throughout Spain. Workers were trying to overthrow the right-wing regime. In Asturias, they murdered a large number of police and religious leaders with dynamite and machine guns and took control of the region. In Catalan, they declared an antifascist state. By 1936, Catalonia was fully under the control of the workers, led predominantly by the anarchosyndicalist union, CNT, and the Iberian Anarchist Federation (FAI).
