The Omicron subvariant JN.1 has surged to dominate COVID-19 cases in the US, jumping from just 7.5% a few weeks ago to nearly half of all infections. | AARP
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there is an “alarming increase” in antibiotic-resistant germs in Ukraine hospitals. A survey found that 60% of patients with infections were fighting bacteria that could withstand the “last line of defense” in a doctor’s arsenal. Officials say the drug-resistant infections are spreading beyond the country’s borders, creating an “urgent crisis.” Read more from CBS News.
Research with lab mice shows an experimental vaccine stimulates the body's basic immune system to protect against a range of pathogens associated with hospital infections.
Scary thought for gardeners: An Australian woman has become the first person to survive an infection from the deadly “blackleg” bacteria. The woman was believed to have been infected while gardening with bare hands that had been scratched by a cat. More from Live Science: https://flip.it/pQVFCT #Science#Bacteria#Infections#Health
@josh@timbray given the number of people I know who have gotten #covid, including more than once, I am floored that I don't know anyone for sure that has #longCovid. And I am in communities that discuss #disability. I just think people have gotten really lucky or the #symptoms haven't popped up yet, because some are recent #infections.
The number of new infections from the human immunodeficiency virus or HIV declined worldwide last year and over the past decade, with the sharpest declines in sub-Saharan Africa.

"BA.2.86
Yunlong Cao reported that BA.2.86 can evade our neutralizing #antibodies, even if we had prior XBB.1.5 #infections, meaning that the new fall #vaccine may not protect well against BA. 2.86. But there is a caveat. It turns out that BA.2.86 can evade antibodies, but it is not as infectious or transmissible as other variants in circulation now.
This is reassuring. We know that antibodies from the new Fall XBB.1.5 vaccine expected out in about 2 weeks, will protect us from EG.5 and FL.1.5.1 variants which are in circulation now in the U.S. and many parts of the world.
Ben Murrell’s lab in Sweden announced that eight out of twelve blood donors with prior XBB.1.5 infection had antibodies that could neutralize BA.2.86. The updated fall booster against XBB.1.5 may provide some protection against BA.2.86. We will have to wait and see"
An immunocompromised person in my family got COVID for the first time, AT THE HOSPITAL because they stopped requiring ANY PRECAUTIONS. No masks, no nothing.
They can't avoid the hospital so that means they'll just have to roll the dice each time they go?
What a cruel world.
Immunocompromised means the vaccine doesn't work as well. So what the current US policy says is equivalent to "you're on your own" good luck! 😡😡😡
@timnitGebru#Hospital acquired #infections have always been fairly common. Poor hand washing is one reason. But masks are such a simple thing to include to help protect against -- not just #COVID but other airborne diseases like #measles that are making a come back.
A treatment for HIV taken just once, using the genome-editing technology Crispr, is receiving fast-track designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
“#Africa is suffering from a silent, but costly, epidemic of fungal infections. We found that the emergence of deadly fungal infections in the region is primarily driven by a high burden of HIV infections, lack of access to quality healthcare, and unavailability of effective antifungal drugs.”
