Some of you are aware of the ongoing TA #strike at #McGill, and it pains me to see the administration is succeeding in actively dividing undergraduates, graduate #students, and #professors alike, by pushing all three to the absolute mental limit. We - and by that I mean all three above - must NOT let the administration tear the social fabric in our #university to put money before people. When the #union says "united we bargain, divided we beg," it means not just them, but everyone. 1/
Someone really cares about #orthography (or maybe they learned it in class?) that they tried to fix the #spelling of our university staff... (Edited: the #Canadian Oxford Dictionary lists "enrolment" as the word, which is the British spelling, but includes the American "enrollment" as a variation. Canadian websites use "enrolment.")
Want to help striking TAs at McGill who've been fired or suspended from their other campus positions for participating in the strike? Here are a couple of mutual aid links for funds to support students facing financial hardship. 🧵
Good thing daughter will only have one term left by then. Yikes!
University tuition to double for out-of-province students in Quebec starting next year
The Quebec government made the announcement on Friday, framing it as a move to stop subsidizing students from the rest of Canada who come to Quebec’s English-language universities for a cheaper education.
What the stories about the anti-Gaza War encampment at #McGill are missing is that the encampment is located in the same place where the university holds its commencement ceremony, an event occurring at the end of May.
I'm not sure if McGill would be more tolerant if the encampment were elsewhere, but I'm sure they want to re-establish control over that field soon.
It seems like popular #lunch spot around #McGill all lurk in the most unnoticeable corners... (Low rent ≈ cheap prices?) Anyways, visited that Korean place, shared a table with two tourists to the city, chatted, admired each other's #food... and of course we all enjoyed our own meals!
I listened to #Canadaland Short Cuts last night. It was pretty interesting and I hope some of the people involved in the #FreePalestine movement, especially at #McGill, give it a listen
I am a bit disappointed that Jesse's guest @justinling didn't plug his Mastodon account? I've bothered Goldsbie on here before about why the journos all chose Bluesky and I half-suspect Jesse Brown decided his newsroom is going to double doen on his bad pro-Twitter, anti-Mastodon take from late 2022. Maybe that's tinfoil hat of me but it's perplexing when Justin actually has an account that he seemingly still uses!
A poster was shared on social media to promote the protest. A description of the event said protesters were "delivering a message to #McGill administration that we refuse to stand by quietly while they remain complicit in #genocide."
Just came back from #AlAqsaPeoplesUniversity - #UQAM. Donated some needed supplies. Quite the restrictive police presence, more than last week for sure.
