Registrations are now open for #XConfAustralia! This year’s theme Better Together: Business By Technology reflects how technology performance has become integral to business success. Covering everything from the global race for #AI and the vital need for responsible innovation, the know-how to building successful internal #Platforms, to delivering more with less by improving #EngineeringEffectiveness. https://thght.works/3PAcOh2
Let's get this out of the way: they give a number of #reasons why #webservers "might wish" to establish that a web #client is running on a "#trusted" software stack, including things like "make sure other game players aren't cheating" and "ensure I'm talking to another human".
#Godot Community Forums were made read-only by a new owner.
At May this year, the previous owner of GCF @TwistedTwigleg has burnt out and tranferred the ownership of forum to @cybereality. Andres was granted all the permissions needed due to his enthusiasm. In the middle of this week, zie suddenly created an exhaustive post accusing #GodotEngine to be a scam.
Now, I'm not going to peel the layers of threads and subthreads of this incident for you, so better read for yourself.
#Godot Community Forums is but another #platform with the puppetteer. I would not ask enthusiasts to host similar #platforms indefinitely and users to depend on them, since each one of them remains a #WalledGarden.
I think we should gather more around the distributed communities on #Lemmy, #Matrix and such. This way, nobody feels sick of being in the single room with hot-headed decision makers.
Looks like we don't need laws after all for platforms to opportunistically suppress political user content: In 🇫🇷 #France, a #Snapchat#lobbyist admitted in a parliamentary hearing that the company was "proud" to have collaborated "hand in hand with the interior ministry" to make sure only user content critical of the mass protests was shown on #SnapMaps.
Of course, #Snap's behaviour here only emphasises the immense power centralised #platforms like #Snapchat, #Facebook, and #Instagram have over our public and political debates and how they can invisibly manipulate them (with our without cooperation of the government).
Not sure the panel recording will be public, so here are my notes in a long 🧵 thread:
▶️ The DSA is rather good at respecting #freedom of expression, it gives platforms some new tools to carefully consider and improve their moderation practices and users to defend their rights. [1/8]
▶️ That of course requires heavy, heavy investment from the largest #platforms: They must acknowledge that their cost of operation per user will increase considerably, reflecting the real societal costs and including the externalities of running global, centralised social media platforms. [2/8]
With looming introduction of #threads and the subsequent integration with the #fediverse I thought a quick summary of a key piece of #economics literature is in order. Likely too late, but perhaps not.
