Does anyone know the US rules for a person bringing a necessary companion on a business trip? Are the companion's airfare and lodging fully deductible?

Are the attacks on Anglea Rayner driven by snobbery, or to be clearer; classism?

Well when we compare her political treatment & the DWP's now toxic position on unpaid carers, with the lightness of touch when dealing with the wealthy (either in politics or when found to have broken tax-related laws), I think we can safely say that distinctions of class as drivers for public/official attitudes are ver much alive & kicking!

Here's @RichardJMurphy own summary (for the Guardian) of a range of measures he has been proposing in his recent blogging around (simple) tax & associated policy reform.

All are excellent suggestions but No.5 is especially timely - lets collect the 30% of corporate taxes owed but not paid; its time the state enforced corporate tax payments, rather than penalising unpaid carers!

If Rachel Reeves followed this path, her fiscal 'probity' would look very different.

Once again Starbucks have been using high transfer payments (with intellectual property as the 'vehicle') to depress its UK corporation tax exposure.

Of course, its not illegal & it a common method of moving money round to avoid taxation... moreover, IPR provisions are central to investment treaties & so any attempted crack down on such transfers would likely be tied up an extended international legal dispute with the USA.

Best bet; drink other coffee!

I spend most of my week debugging code. So when I picked up my #tax documents from a preparation service and something seemed wrong, I started debugging.

Turns out they made a copy-and-paste error that meant a $2500 tax bill rather than a $1000 refund. 🤦‍♂️

I did my own #taxes for years until recently. I just want to pay someone to save myself the weekend of researching and agonizing. But I also need to be confident enough in that I don't need to double-check their work for crap like this. 🤡

So, at the high-skills end of the gig economy, a significant minority of professional service(s) contractors have reported not taking work due to the changes in taxation brought in via the IR35 tax reform (which required employers of contractors to be sure about the tax status of contracted workers).

These reforms were partly intended to stop tax avoidance through the setting up of one person service firms.

Do middle class professionals not like paying a fair(er) tax?
