Excellent post on kbin about defederating from #Threadsapp, it's implications and possible ulterior motives Meta may have for imlementing ActivityPub compatibility in Threads.
Meta's Threads app hit 100 million users within five days, becoming the fastest-growing app in history. https://flip.it/Y3PO1I
As Mark Zuckerberg no doubt celebrates his new success, Elon Musk shows signs of buyer's remorse after reports state he is attempting to sue the law firm that forced him to buy Twitter. https://flip.it/dbGLL0
I had a small revelation today. A friend and I were talking about #ThreadsApp, which they were not particularly interested in, and I brought up #Mastodon.
They asked what it was, and I said it was #OpenSource and used #ActivityPub. They had no idea what that meant, so I switched to talking in terms of values.
I've never considered myself tech savvy. I work on web content, but I'm not a developer. I don't code. I assumed if I could understand Mastodon, anyone could—if I knew what open source meant and what Activity Pub was, everyone else must too.
I think I underestimated my tech knowledge and others' lack of knowledge, like the opposite of the #DunningKrugerEffect. And I think if we want to draw people away from #Threads, we're going to have to discuss Mastodon less technically and more in terms of values and community.
In the bright side, I don't think many people are aware of or interested in Threads, and my friend now hates #Meta/ #Facebook even more!
It's almost as if #Meta declared that they'd federate #Threads as a way to get the "fediverse" crowd not to bitch about Meta/Facebook/Zuck's horrific past abuses of privacy and other data abuses, and the fact that the Threads app has quite possibly the most invasive set of anti-privacy demands of any app in history. Almost like Meta thinks the fediverse gang are all suckers.
@lauren
Let's think. Is there any way Meta could possibly corrupt the Fediverse in an irreversible manner, and get all the marketing data from its inhabitants? #threads#threadsapp
Threads not having a following (or at least interests) feed is just a bad time. Social platforms get ruined for me when I have to stop seeing what I care about in lieu of garbage “everyone” content, and Threads just opens that way. When “everyone” shows up to party, I’m out. Becomes lame fast.
OK fine my resolve to stay away from #Threads lasted all of 2 days. When I realised it was available in #Malaysia I decided to sign up to execute a spying mission for the #Fediverse. 🤭
Apparently Asia doesn't care about privacy and data the way EU does so #Meta has boldly released it to us.
Anyway the good stuff: I can see the people I follow.
Ps: Yes I follow a lot of #cats. Can you blame me?
@liztai that's true... It would be great to keep the fediverso free of nonsense content. I see a lot of nonsense content at #threadsapp, it becomes really boring. I love #mastodon
@octofloofy@h_tejas Officially, #threadsapp is not available in the EU due to GDPR concerns, but something makes me think, #meta doesn‘t care. Since it is still possible to join Threads although it is officially not available in the EU, I don‘t think „EU accounts“ are technically handled any differently.
Quite like the vibes, once #ActivityPub#federation is enabled and Threads join the #Fediverse I might experiment with following Mastodon/Pleroma accounts from there and vice versa. Would be interesting to see what 🧵 content look like with reverse chronological feed and Fediverse content viewer in a news feed!
#FLOSS stuff will be posted here first, or dual posted, of course
@Nour@DanFox@Gargron one of the first things in the #threadsapp I noticed was them saying the intention is to become part of the #fediverse. That'll help bring more exposure as newbies ask themselves what that is
@taylorlorenz@AnonNewsDE Since the #ThreadsApp really has access to all the data on the smartphones of these morons, the FBI only needs to ask Meta after the next capitol storm.
"#Mastodon is failing" so hard that #Fediverse just crossed 4mln monthly active accounts (based on the-federation.info). :blobcatgiggle:
This is already slightly more than Nov and Dec #TwitterMigration waves' peaks. And it is still going up.
What I find particularly important is that it seems like a lot of this is not new accounts, but people returning to accounts created before and then left unused.
I expect this to be a more resilient kind of growth. Less of a drop after it peaks.
@rysiek These stats will go even more wild once #ThreadsApp joins the #Fediverse as from last time I saw they had something like 75 million users joined already.
I hope the ActivityPub stuff comes through with #Threads so that I can follow my friends that are there, because that seems like the best case scenario. If a percentage of my friends just vanish because we’re all using different things, that’s not really an improvement.
@RobW@collin If #ThreadsApp joins ActivityPub, convincing a slight proportion of its users to switch to instances/applications that allow finer control over the content seen and preserve privacy would already be a great success for "us".
This would probably require some well-thought-out improvements to "our" applications. But the benefits of these efforts would go to all kinds of people, not to a firm. It's worth the effort.
@jo But I thought it's so awesome and federation and stuff, Eugen sad so :< They wouldn't do the bad things, right @Gargron? Surely nothing that warrants stuff like, oh I don't know, perhaps defederating? :breadthink: Let's become one big happy family with the Leopards, I'm certain they won't eat our faces. :blahaj: #FediBlockMeta#BlockMeta#ThreadsApp#Threads#Meta
