Everything in this long text by @Mer__edith is just on point. It is a testament to the fact that sound historical and economic understanding is key to realizing the threats that wait in current technologies and is crucial to identifying todays areas of resistance. It gives me hope that @signalapp has such leadership.

She describes the liberal narratives of contractual freedom, the way slavery inspired the mechanisms for control of workers in early industrialization and todays gig economy.

At the core she shows how capitalism always strives towards representing people and their activities as quantifiable commodities. This goal has been imprinted in many forms of modern tech.

My 2 cents: We can see it today in which aims at subjugating the digital reality under the same exploitative logics.

Don't know how I can write this without laughing too hard...

There's a Web3CFO club and the guys behind this "idea" published a 100+ page guide: the "Web3 CFO, Ultimate Guide"

I won't share links here, but if interested ping me, I got the PDF without the need to enter your email... (bc the Binance Director for Africa doesn't know how to share stuff on LinkedIn).

Haven't read it yet, as I'm ROTFL...

So... ALWAYS had a community of (that part of twitter) and . They’re not newcomers, it’s not a new trend, they’re all months old accounts. They have a very well defined cluster in the bluesky social graph, etc.

And even the dev team have an history of working on web3, cryptocurrency stuff and being part of TPOT and . So the web3 cluster and the TPOT clusters are no accident.

So, did bsky users started asking themselves why TPOT and cryptobros were invited before them?
Asking why Jack Dorsey who is a strong cryptocurrency believer is financing both Nostr and bluesky?
Asking about the devs past work?

No, no, much more important. They decided to dunk and dogpile the one guy who got the "bitcoin.bsky.social" handle 3 months ago and is simply sharing bitcoin memes in a platform that always had a cryptobro community.

Congratulation, you built Twitter 2.0, I hate it.

PS: this is not an endorsement of cryptocurrency

Sheesh, to internet

To be honest, platforms or dapps that require an email address to sign up pose a risk to personal privacy, such as Bluesky, Mastodon, and Misskey. 😰

🤔I think there are alternatives like WireMin or Session that I find useful.

Personally preferred WireMin, cuz…

  • WireMin combines end-to-end encrypted messaging for both 1-on-1 chats and chat groups, as well as a blog posting feature called Feed Space. 🚀
  • Regarding the Dataleaks issue with ChatGPT, I think WireMin has solved this issue in some way because users can use ChatGPT anonymously on WireMin. Even though OpenAI may still be collecting data, it won't be valuable if AI can't recognize who you are, right?🔪

Undeniably, Misskey, Mastodon, and Bluesky are making a great contribution to freedom of speech, and I love using Misskey😍. But I am still concerned about the privacy issue. I wonder why they still need personal information to register. Why not make it like WireMin or Session? Where you just create your username and set a password, and done.🤔🤔🤔

In a way, IRC was federated, in the sense that different servers are interconnected.

We used to experience a lot of server splits then. Whenever it happened, the only users left in your room are those still “federated” with the server you've logged-on. Then a major drama, and some server admins split up and formed their own IRC network.

Then, there is email and Jabber/XMPP (late 90s), which are federated.

was defined (from what I've read years ago) as when corporate structure took over, redefind the web into silos.

While was understood as the first phase of the .

And as decentralised, distributed, federated, open, network; or the next phase in SocialWeb.

The one with the upcoming Thursday deadline is quite exciting since I have only 3 days to produce everything (a mobile-friendly space, 30-minute presentation) and this weekend is the time when I all the planning. But when it’s done, I’ll be sure to share it with this group! 😊

@glynmoody I think you are making a bigger deal out of this than it really is. The idea of the is that anyone can participate, that includes corporate entities. We also have instances from @Vivaldi and @internetarchive - no one is complaining about them. The idea isn't to block commercial interest, just to not have a profit motive as the driving force.
