Compiling a reading list for grad students and need your input: what are the best readings on
(1) methods to identify and
(2) measure AI harms?

Self-plugs are always welcomed. Bonus points if papers include ways to "quantify" said harms.

I don't know how a judge can feel good after sentencing a 77 year old theoretical physicist to the penal colony. Especially, if what apparently counts as treason is the vetted(!) publication of research papers.
(He is the second in a series of four similar cases; where the first one "testified" to shorten his own sentence.)
It looks like should be intimidated, to silence the remaining critical voices.

I was bored so I did the unthinkable. Well, to me it was always unthinkable as I have always been anti- . But, out of curiosity I subscribed to -4o and have been feeding various essays, poems, and posts from my various websites and asking for explications and such. And wow does have a great deal of just wonderful things to say about me. I will admit getting all this truly high praise is seducing.

Okay. So I have been using for a couple of hours and there is no doubt in my mind that many, many, many college students are using to write essays. I am so, so, so sorry professors and lecturers. I am so glad this was not around when I was in school. First colleges across the country started shutting down extensive courses/programs and now this. Oh, what a loss of a good .

Hey friends.

If - and it is a very big if - I wanted to start a PhD in about a year's time, what should I do now to prepare?

I got my MSc a year ago. I haven't started looking at any specific programmes yet.

UK-based tips especially appreciated!

"She criticized my organizational skills and told me that she didn’t see a passion or spark for doing research in me."

Pleading to passion are cop outs for not paying your, or providing sufficient guidance. This was squarely on the PI to begin with, by not reading the room or asking for timely feedback on workload. The the response left a culture of fear (nor one of responsibility and disclosure). Poor management as ever.

There are two paths to success in modern academic science.

  1. Be the gatekeeper for access to funds/resources and dictate conditions favorable to your public image.

  2. Do good science with as few resources as possible and get lucky.

Can you guess which is more common?

albertcardona,
@albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@tdverstynen

I guess we could discuss what "success" means, and what "get lucky" means.

The first choice reads horrible, as in, as formulated, only an individual not actually interested in science but on the accolades would do that.

The second choice is, to me, academic research as usual. It's amazing how much a laptop, experience, ingenuity, and a network of friends and collaborators can accomplish, even without a budget. And the journey and the nurturing personal relationships are the reward; the end goal is always yet another metaphorical lush valley, jungle, or sea floor to explore.

Just a reminder that adding “young” (or “old”, for that matter) in a job ad is discriminatory. Why not write down something that the candidate can actually work on improving instead, and that has something to do with the job you’ll ask them to do?

Hi everyone! I am currently writing a term paper, titled Examining Filipino family heritage expression in family tree mapping. This study is a term paper to be submitted in my PS 215: Special Course on Filipino Heritage course at the Asian Center.

My paper hopes to answer the question "How is family heritage expressed in the work of Filipinos who conduct family tree mapping?"

If you are someone who's done family tree mapping or any sort of genealogical research on your ancestors, then be part of a mini FGD for my study. This will be done remotely, via Zoom. I am looking for 3-4 more participants.

If you are interested in the study and would like to participate, feel free to send me a message here, Facebook (Jericho Daniel Igdanes), or through email (jdigdanes@up.edu.ph).

Uncited generative AI use by students in coursework

I teach a course where I allow the use of generative AI. My university rules allow this and the students are instructed that they must cite the use of generative AI. I have set the same Laboratory Report coursework for the last two years. And students submit their work through TurnItIn. so I can see what the TurnItIn Ai checker is reporting.
